She looks fantastic for a 74-year old, and ""Non ho l'età" is still an amazing song.

 

 

The line-up this year was actually pretty decent. Most of the songs were actually quite good. But I still rank Switzerland, Poland and Azerbaijan at the bottom, and would gladly have replaced any of them with Ireland.

One song that really has grown on me is the Netherlands. A powerful ballad without the vocal gymnastics that other countries indulge in, and I love that it's performed in Dutch.

And just like predicted.... the televotes went in favour of the Ukraine. Not at all surprising, but still slightly disappointing.

There's no doubt in my mind that they got a lot of sympathy votes they wouldn't have received under normal circumstances.

 Some very noticeable discrepancies between the juries and the public: Moldova, Australia, Azerbaijan, Serbia, Norway, Poland and the Netherlands. Not to mention Switzerland who got the dreaded nul points from the public.

Like every year, there was some drama concerning the voting: In semi-final 2, six national juries apparently decided to swap votes. However, this was noticed by the EBU, so the jury votes of these countries were declared null and void, and artificial results were calculated instead. The same happened again in the Grand Final. The involved countries were Azerbaijan, Georgia, Montenegro, Romania, Poland, and San Marino.

I'm fine with Ukraine winning – I mean, it was kind of to be expected

It was also clear that Germany would finish last once again – after all, our broadcaster NDR just doesn't give a damn. In the pre-selection, they made it very clear that they were looking for "the perfect radio song". Well, they got exactly that – a radio song which is fine as background noise, but doesn't work on a big stage. I just feel sorry for these young artists that get burned year after year.

I will start a new thread once the host city has been announced, but in the meantime, the *country* for 2023 has now been confirmed… we’re off to the UK for the ninth time in the contest’s history.

Former British Eurovision winners have differing opinions which city should host it: Lulu (winner 1969) votes for her hometown Glasgow, Cheryl Baker (winner 1981 as part of Bucks Fizz) thinks Cardiff would be perfect, while Katrina Leskanich (winner 1997 as part of Katrina & The Waves) gives her support to Manchester.
