Soap veteran William Simons has died.

British actor William Simons, most famous as Alf Ventress in the long-running series "Heartbeat", has died aged 79. He also had roles in "Coronation Street", "Emmerdale Farm" and "Last of the Summer Wine"

He was one of only two actors (the other being Derek Fowlds as Oscar Blaketon) who stayed with "Heartbeat" throughout the shows entire run 1992-2010. He also appeared in the spin-off show "The Royal".
