Neil was a cuckold. I truly regret that triangle. It tarnished Neil and Devon's relationship. It just never felt the same after. KSJ was such a good looking, youthful, sexy man. That triangle (blindness included) made  Neil look an old unattractive man who couldn't compete with his richer, younger, more desirable son. Shouldn't have been done. 

That's what happens when you're solely restricted to dating within your family.

Not to mention Neil kidnapping Hilary was always an elephant in the room, especially when he would try to act all high and mighty with her after that.

Compound that with Neil taking advantage of Hilary's memory loss after said kidnapping and experimental drug treatment by having sex with her. It was obvious the show was aware that Neil looked pathetic in that triangle and wanted him to regain some of his virility and the upper hand on Devon by having Devon walk in to see Neil and Hilary together. Unfortunately, the opposite occurred. Neil looked even more pathetic. 

 

The odd part is that once that story was over, it was over. Yet, Devon and Hilary still paid penance for the affair. They never escaped it
