Finally a win in a penalty shoot-out for England!!

They had lost 6 of 7 penalty shoot-outs going in to this one.

England finally wins a penalty shootout at the World Cup.

 

 

I love that "gggggggoooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllll" at the end.

There isn't a whole lot to celebrate in the US so I've been keeping my eye on this and I'm glad England are confounding expectations and getting this far. I don't really follow football/soccer enough to have a vested interest in the teams but a big part of me will always have emotional ties to the UK and it's good they seem to have less of the toxicity that they have had in past years, whether they get any further than this or not.

^That commentator has some lung power, wow.

 

I have... conflicted feelings about the UK, as my personal and professional lives are so connected to it. So a part of me wanted them to lose. But I do like how diverse their team is now.

 

It was Colombians that got nervous. I felt those misses from a mile away. The key seems to be just pick your spots and really go for it.

France is through to the semi-finals after beating Uruguay 2-0.

That second goal for France was a massive mistake from Uruguay's goalkeeper. Not the best time to do something like that... in a World Cup quarter-final.

This Belgian team isn’t half-bad.

Well, England made the final four. They looked pretty sturdy out there. Didn’t give an inch.

It wasn't the best match I've ever seen, but England's win was very well-deserved.

 

Croatia the dream killer.

 

If Croatia plays like this in the semi, England will absolutely clown them and make the final.

I wonder how much energy these two long matches, first against Denmark and now against Russia, will have taken from Croatia. How much will they be able to recover to face England, who will be a much tougher opponent?

France are going to be a hard team to beat.
