Is anyone else watching the slave period drama on WGN America? It stars Aldis Hodge (Leverage), Jurnee Smollett-Bell (The Great Debaters) and Christopher Meloni (Law & Order SVU).

I was hesitant because I know I can get emotional on the topic of slavery but it really is a good show so far and we're only two episodes in. I didn't see some of the happening coming and I do like that.

I love the stand-out characters of Hodge as well as Rosalee's (Jurnee) mom, Ernestine played by Amirah Vann. She's breathtaking and I think probably all her kids are from the master's but so far I can only tell that her youngest is.

I hate the master's wife, she's so ugh.

I have been mesmerized until I saw Jussie Smollett in the preview.  Damn it!

Ernestine is one smart bitch, and altho she's a slave, she owns that house.  I was rolling when she got that kid to go along and pretend he took that seal but heartbroken when the slaves had to hold those logs and the last group standing wouldn't give up.  Aldis Hodge is amazing!

@ChitHappens I finally saw Ernestine as being useful the last episode b/c I was NOT feeling her the first two episodes. It was genius how she got the son to take the wrap for taking the seal.

I did tweet the other night that the slaves should've been poisoning their master b/c I would've been. The log scene was just too hard to watch.

Prior to last week's show, Ernestine only had to look out for her own.  Now, she had to look out for all the slaves on that plantation.  Ernie knows her kids are safe (when they are with her of course), and she can't be touched.  She owned the show, IMO.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS! I love her so much. She's the boss, and you can tell the wife loathes her because she has her husband's eye among other things. I hated when she wanted Rosalee to go and get her son from that guy when they startled his horses and made all that stuff break. I realize James (her youngest) is the Master's but are Rosalee and the older brother too?

Agreed about that log scene but I loved Noah encouraging them.

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! Frog Jack is a mess with him trying to turn on the slaves once he found out the reward money for each person.

WTF is Cato's deal? I mean really? I wish he never would have joined because he's only out for himself, poor Zeke. That scene was crazy when he was just doing all that killing on adrenaline and he wouldn't go down. Cato has got to get his eventually, I'm not saying kill him because I think the character is charismatic but something needs to happen to him.

    • It seems like they may have been going in one direction for Andre and then changed their mind. He had this player/bachelor thing going at first where he was messing with Dani, seemed to be feeling Eva, and then somehow smitten by bland Ashley of all people. I feel like Ashley was supposed to be the one that finally made him want to be with someone and settle. The way he talked her up in those earlier episodes was really confusing. The wonderful, amazing nurse Ashley and conveniently she's unattainable because she has a partner, but he can't stop thinking of her and takes these busted pics of her. It was a mess. However, it all seems to have been dropped. I honestly feel like Andre can go. That may be an unpopular opinion but I don't need his breathy final syllable to be content with BTG. It's always like "There's gotta be another wh-ahyy"
    • This is where McLaibey falls apart. It becomes clear that McTavish had not thought past Brent/Marion...so the energy drops and she starts throwing things at the wall (Blakes twins, Lonatrat.)   Fans HATED this funeral. Everyone is mad at everyone else, which is fine, the death of a beloved community figure would give people a reason to come together...(Quint and Nola could come together at least for  a bit to support each other, Nola and VAn could finally admit they kinda, sorta like each other) Its just an example of McTavish's mean writing.   I have a feeling they were going to make Dahlia Frank's kid but they chickened out. Making Tina a prostitute didn't help, they could have been lovers when they were young but felt society pressure to part. Marcus took over David's role (you can't have two young black men at that time...)   Get used to it...this will happen, the same storyline over and over until the end.
    • Does anyone happen to have a recording or any footage of Jennifer’s funeral?
    • It's such a shame that the conflict couldn't be resolved in a mature way between the two actors.. especially since Albee was a bigger asset for the show in terms of character and his popular will they/won't they pairing with Deborah Saxon. One of the things about Edge was that it was just as popular with male viewers as it was with women.  It's one of things I think the show forgot in the final year or two with the deemphasis on the male characters.

Wonder what Ruth Martin ever did to this guy?!!! I mean Ruth Martin? I don't get it. Next, IMO they are just picking on Eve Donovan. Who is Dina Mergeron? Same question  Joanna Manning? Diana Colville Is that because of the bad DAYS retcon of her being Leo Stark's mother? All of the rest, CO-SIGN!

    • I don't really care about what the men are wearing, or not wearing.   What I care about is focusing on the writing and character development for each of the male characters. Andre really doesn't have a lot of character development that sets him apart from the other male characters except that he seems content to be degraded and mistreated by the elitist Dani.  I would like to know why a good looking younger guy like Andre would willingly be at the mercy of an emotional vampire such as Dani.   Martin, on the other hand, seems to have decent character development.. and it is partly due to how the actor chooses to recite his lines.  Martin was raised in a very privileged household and probably went to the best schools... so it makes sense that he would come across as thinking he was above everyone else.  Most people raised in a upper class situation as the Duprees would view themselves as better than others (it's the same trait Dani seems to employ on those she feels superior to). It makes me wonder how Nicole came out of that family being so warm and nurturing  when her family dynamics seemed very appearance oriented.
    • I know, right. I after just re-reading the thread, I'm like ooppph!
