Members SouthOfSoap
I can handle him in supporting. He is not versatile enough to be lead (not like that has stopped most male actors on this show...) Hopefully we get more sarcastic, less angry/shouty this time round. Members Skin
I doubt James Scott being casted is what killed Dattilo's career at Days. Ultimately what killed Lucas was the shift in character they gave him circa 2003. Lucas basically became every other vanilla character that was in Salem once that happened. While Sami's antics were still entertaining during that time Lucas' self-righteous schtick got old rather fast. He basically became another version of Austin which would have been fine had that character not be reintroduced during 2005. Even so Lucas was still viable until that particular stock character became so over saturated with the addition of characters like Austin, Daniel, Brady, Phillip, Eric, Rafe and other males his age range became a dime a dozen. That's something that still plagues Days to this day. Way too many white knights that are virtually interchangable from one another in terms of story. In that regard we still don't really need Lucas in his current capacity, since we still have so many of them on screen even now. Ultimately EJ is the very least of Lucas' problems. EJ is safe because he is pretty much the only "grey" character on the show. He isn't a hero which is why he has no real competition in terms of airtime and stories. In that regard the only characters he is competing for stories are Chad (who is leaving and in another age range) and Stefano (who is in another age bracket as well and who also goes on vacation leave quite frequently). His sex appeal might also be a cause in his diminished screen time too. I never found Dattillo to be particularly attractive and he is now competing with arguably three or four other lead males who are "sexier" and have a similar niche to his character. Members teplin
I hope so too. I was never a big fan of Lucas, but I've enjoyed the character on this last go-round. I like the way Dattilo has played snarky and especially his current relationship with Sami -- at least in the small doses we've seen it. I hope they don't try to turn him into a conventional leading man again, that doesn't really work. I am quite shocked that he's so high up on the list of DAYS mainstays -- he certainly hasn't had that kind of impact on the show.
Members Antoyne
I've always enjoyed Lucas, and hated that the one-two punch of Daniel and Rafe got rid of him. Kate's brood is my favorite family on the show so I'm always happy when they get some airtime.
Members jfung79
I think you have some relevant points in your post, Skin, but you left out Nick Fallon as a grey, potentially villainous male character. JJ too, although very young. And Victor. I don't think the good characters are all in interchangeable stories either, nor are they all good. Brady's hostility and violence toward his dad and Marlena over Kristen, was not something that is pure and innocent, nor could it have been written for Rafe, who does not have that family with that history of connection. Brady is also more violent than Eric. Lucas is not portrayed as all good either. He tried to help Sami steal evidence from the police for Will. I am glad he is getting more story and it's very possible to give him more story. The show is great at digging into character, presenting flaws and good qualities for all, and I look forward to watching! Days does not do black and white characterization under this regime. Members electrorat
As much as I despise the extremely overrated James Scott and the ridiculous character he plays, I don't blame him for the lack of Lucas over the last few years. I blame the Gary Tomlin, who basically recasted the role with Rafe.
Members SouthOfSoap
Surely in hindsight, it is clear that it is Higley that did that, not Tomlin. If Tomlin loved Rafe so much, why did he put him in a coma for 3 months? If he disliked Lucas so much, why is he bringing him back now?
Members Sindacco
What do you mean bringing him back now? He came back one and a half year ago. He was dropped to recurring earlier this year under this regime.
Members SouthOfSoap
Yes, the same regime that didn't send him down a lift shaft or ship him off to Europe never to be seen again like they did with characters they don't like. They see Lucas as supporting - doesn't mean they hate him, just means he isn't an A-player for them.
Members Sindacco
Yes I agree, but in the other post it looked like you were saying they were bringing him back now. I don't see him as an A-player either. I agree with Skin's post. Lucas was a fun and scheming character back in 1993-2003. After that I have never really cared about him. Members Skin
I think Days is doing a great job at creating a watchable soap right now, but that doesn't mean that there is much variety in terms of characterization. Ultimately Days works but there are still many characters who fall under the same umbrella in terms of characterization. Swap out Brady, Kristen and Marlena's names with Rafe, Gabi's and Sami's and you virtually have the story Rafe was in earlier this year in regards to Will and Gabi's custody war over Adrianna. Ultimately the players are interchangable. You have one good character pitted against one schemer and that's basically the genesis of all the storylines on Days. Members Days22
Days has more blah or bad characters than good and layered. By far. And its a joke that they really thought/think Rafe and Daniel are leads.
