Merlin Season 4

Wow. shocking episode. It's like the show is one by one addressing all my complaints...

I'm shocked they killed off Urther. Wasn't expecting that until the end of the series, but I think maybe the actor wanted to leave so they killed him off earlier than intended. Either way, LONG overdue. Hate they now have Arthur hating magic. Show had been slowing building Arthur open to magic, only to go 2 steps back. Wonder how show will have Arthur go back to be open to magic?

Yes, it was a really good episode! It started out like a typical problem of the week show, but then turned into so much more. This is the best season yet I think.

I'm surprised they killed off the king as well. This really does remind me of Smallville. I keep wanting Merlin to be better, to anticipate Morgana's moves, but I guess it's too soon for that. I agree with you both that this is shaping up to be the best season yet.

I was surprised at Uther's death, but other than Arthur loving him, he really didn't have many redeeming qualities. He was not a particularly good man. I did like how Uther's death was used to manipulate Arthur into hating magic. It will be interesting to see if this will make him as cruel as his father was towards anyone suspected of using magic. It would give Arthur a darkness that I don't think that they want him to have.

I was thinking about the same thing Ann. While I'm far from an expert on Arthurian legend, in most works I've seen or read, he's generally a great king. The past three seasons they've been telling how bad of a King Uther was for killing innocent people practicing magic while slowly having Arthur accept magic more and more, to undo that the way they did, and essentially make Arthur just like his father, I'm not sure I like or not. Now that he hates magic, is he going to pursue and kill magic users as aggressively as his father? Because if so, then really he's no better than his father. I'm curious as to how the show takes it from here.

Thanks for posting. I figured we'd be getting a "problem of the week" type episode soon. This one was a good one.

Yeah, I liked it, but it always seems less important when it isn't about Morgana. Still, it was good.

I really enjoyed this episode. I like seeing Arthur struggling to grow into the king that he wants to be and resisting mimicking his father who was a bad king. I wish that Merlin and Gwen or even Giaus would remind Arthur that Uther was not this great king that he is waxing on about. Arthur has completely forgotten that he was in conflict with his father for most of his life because of Uther's bad decisions as a king and a father. I am glad that he apologized to Gwen at the end. I think they are great couple and I always love the music that plays when they are together and kiss.
