How much do you think the NYC ratings would have affected Somerset? I ask because in NY WNBC moved the show from 4pm to 1pm in the summer of 1975 after WCBS moved The Mike Douglas Show from 4:30pm to 4pm and shortened it to an hour all to accomdate Dinah Shore's syndicated show (That I assume was not doing well enough in its original 9am slot) It was now up against Ryan's Hope and the game show Musical Chairs

I'm sure that by 75, Somerset was losing affiliates all over the country, not only moving the show away from 4pm but also not showing it all.

New York is the top market so that would definitely affect the ratings.

I recall that when NY moved Guiding Light to the mornings it had an immediate effect on the numbers.

ABC replaced  A World Apart with reruns of Love American Style beginning June 28th 1971.

It won its timeslot

ABC Love American Style 8.4/31 12th

CBS Search for Tomorrow 8.0/31 16th

NBC Who, What, Where Game 6.5/25 26th

AWA had been running 3rd in its slot, hence the cancellation.

That pushed ABC from a 7.7/29 to 8.9/31 in daytime ratings just 0.4 behind CBS.

So ABC decided to move LAS to 4pm and Password to 12.30 hoping that Password would be competitive at that time and LAS would improve the 4pm rating, thus pushing ABC to #1.

Did it happen??

Irna Phillips was brought back after 2 years. I imagine she was offered a ton of cash to return.

Edge having a major boost.

Mid 74

CBS had been on a concerted push to improve their daytime numbers as they had been running neck and neck with ABC and NBC.

They had dropped sitcoms in the mornings,3 soaps and introduced gameshow blocks in morning and afternoon slots.

In addition there were 'long and painstaking negotiations and confabs with P&G execs about sprucing up basic storylines.'

There were concerns that the early block of soaps (LOL, Y&R and SFT) were losing the momentum from the successful a.m. gameshow block

The results

April 22 - June 2

CBS 7.1

NBC 6.6

ABC 6.5

Search went from 12th (7.4) to 7th (8.3)

Y&R 17th(7.2/29) closer to NBC's Jackpot (7.4/30)

Love of Life up to a 28 share.

ABC 6.3/24

First two of July 75

CBS 6.9/28

ABC's move to second was the result of a new lineup.

Ryan's Hope debuted @1 moving AMC to 12.30 and Rhyme or Reason and You Don't Say debuted.

Although RH's 27 share was down from AMC 34 share in that time period the previous 2 weeks,AMC scored a 38 share at 12.30 up from a 24 share for the cancelled Split Second.

At 2.30 Rhyme or Reason had a 30 share compared to a 26 share for it's predecessor Showdown.

At 4pm You Don't Say scored a 19 share whereas previous occupant Money Maze had a 15 share.

The 3 way tussle during the 70's was exciting to see.

    • Melissa Ordway announced she was moved to recurring back in November but is still credited with the contract cast members.
    • I think of Evan as a smarmy bast*rd. Maybe you'll like that description. You certainly have him pegged correctly since he is just a soldier following "Admiral" Iris's marching orders.
    • So far the only interest I've seen from Evan to Amanda has been listening to Iris's orders to go and seduce her.  So far he hasn't been successful... but who knows. Amanda is unbearable at times. Entitled, spoiled... idiotic. Iris... so blatantly manipulating her and Amanda takes the bait. But I guess... when she gets in trouble... she'll have a chance to learn. That's what makes these shows so interesting.    Oh, no, don't worry. You haven't ruined a thing. Evan has not been on my radar that much... he was not one of the characters I was caring particularly... so nothing much has been changed for me. I don't think he has the stuff to ruin Rachel's life. He's just a pretty guy that can follow orders. Iris on the other hand... is dangerous.

P.S Maybe Evan will surprise me. Who knows.
    • The show has gone back to 10/10 entertainment! I'm glad that I was right in feeling that what were experiencing were growing pains. I'm sure they are not over yet, but I'll know that we always comeback to quality drama. I think it's going to be a hell of ride (in a good way) from this moment on. BTG has that magic that not a lot of shows have. I'll update more... when I'm done catching up.
    • So very glad to hear this. Yesterday I suddenly thought; OMG, what about spoilers, have I just  ruined things for Maxim in getting carried away with interest in Evan, who was so well-written & well-acted. BTW, your fan review of this episode was a sight for eyes that had not seen one of these for a little bit too long, LOL!!!  Mitch is also fascinating to me but in his case it's because he was all in with Janice & her nefarious plan & then he did this turnabout we've mentioned & he basically got off scot-free.
    • It does seem cheap and lazy for this show to have just one family. Passions was heavily criticized but it was nicely structured with a total of four families.
    • I think it was definitely a surprising reveal in the storyline. I had a hard time appreciating Evan because I couldn't get behind his interest in Amanda. But that's because I never thought Sandra Ferguson made her a compelling character (although to give her credit she occasionally had decent emotional scenes with Mac or Rachel).
    • I'll even go further... I'll make her re-think BeLief and create a new patent. Brooke needs stuff to do. Anything other than beg or be in her panties. We need her to be creative. But sadly Bradley has a very low opinion of these characters. To him Brooke is nothing more than sex and scandal... or a pathetic doormat. Ridge is nothing more than a chauvinist pig that needs to pit women against each other to feel like A MAN and Steffy is nothing more than her father's guard-dog. I don't even want to open my mouth about Hope. She is such a fiasco in my opinion... I will not suffer if they kill her off. Bradley pooped on her character and now it's too late to fix it. Annika is great and I would hate to see her go, but slutty Hope was not her thing. The vibe was missing.
    • I've seen Jason interact with Mitch and annoy him. That's as far as I recall. I didn't even have a slight idea that Evan had a vendetta against Rachel... That came as a surprise to me. I thought Evan was Iris's dog and that's it. Now he's definitely more interesting.
    • Thanks for these. I can't recall -- did Evan's vendetta have any position on Mitch, or was it all about Rachel? @Maxim have you seen any Frames intreracting with Mitch in any way?
