All My Children Tribute Thread

A recent discussion in the Loving/City forum inspired me to revisit the history of Devon Shepherd.  According to contemporary sources to the plot, Devon never actually kissed Dr. Lynn Carson, PhD. I'd be eager to know if anyone recalls it differently.  My visual memory of Lynn was that she was always dressed in office-realness drag of the 1980s.   And, that Donna Peskow never toned down her New York accent.

Meanwhile, has there ever been a more boring offspring than Devon?

On paper, she had it all.  Teen pregnancy, alcoholism, brief foray into bisexuality, adultery, Devon was always down to clown.  But, she was an eternal meekly mouse, with those tiny braids and that namby-pamby vocal tone.  Mr. Shepard must have been a huge nerd, because Devon inherited none of her mother's charm or elegance.  And, don't get me started on her terrible choices for romantic partners.  One can hardly blame Ellen for forgetting about Devon and pretending Julie was her daughter.

Side note: Devon fell for Cliff Warner after he performed the Heimlich Maneuver on her daughter Bonnie and saved her from choking in 1984.  I don't know why this caused me to go on a side quest, but, the Heimlich Maneuver is a relatively recent innovation.  Up until 1986 the government still trained food workers to slap a person on the back in order to dislodge food.  Heimlich's treatment was superior, and in an effort to make it policy, ABC and the other networks agreed to air pro-Heimlich content starting in 1984, according to TV Guide.  So, Cliff was responsible for training mothers at home how to stop their kids from choking.

I don't remember ANYTHING with Devon and Cliff! I do remember Liza fixated on him (around the time Angel Haining took over the role briefly as Marcy Walker left for Santa Barbara!), but not a thing about Devon. Shows how memorable it was. LOL!

I do have a very hazy memory with Devon and...Wally, was it? I think that was his name, Devon's husband! (Mom watched AMC from jump, and wee little me got into it!) But I do remember poor Tricia Pursley just played Devon as a sad sack.

I have seen little of Wally, but I always think of the backstage story Julia Barr (I think it was Julia) told where he hated his character and storylines so much that at one point he put some form of clown makeup on in his dressing room to show his feelings.

    • Ranger, will you be his champion?! Tell Dante to back the he&l off? Be there for him in the coming days when he is going to be furious & possibly turn his back on the Cerullos & the Qs & show up at Sonny's door looking for a new place to park his weary head? As for me, I watched the NB every year even when I wasn't watching GH. Many years have been disappointing. So far this year is amazingly satisfying. Clothes! Performers! Drama!  So ironic that they actually have Cam doing what we always said he should be doing, emcee, tux, mic, huge toothy grin! Snark! Could they possibly throw any more shade? Nooo! This is like 100% attitude coming from all directions. You could say I died & went to heaven. Gimme all this high school talent show soapy goodness, I mean, it's only 4 days, what kind of wimp are you, anyway? As soap fans, we are supposed to enjoy these occasional flights of fancy. Maybe you aren't, but I sure as he&l am! And, I won't let any Debbie Downers ruin it for me, either. This brief early morning message was brought to you by the letter N for what else Nurses Ball.

        Understandable
    • She's beyond awful. She needs to be sent away. We know that's not going to happen.
    • I knew that was the Manhattan skyline in the background  That’s one of the best parts of this; their relationship can go either way. Though I’m hoping that they’ll eventually find their way back to each other

    • Since we need to see Tide placed in the show at least 4 times a week, Derek should be acknowledged as what happens when one accepts the Tide Pod Challenge.
    • No mention of Hope and Carter's Insta romance?   I skimmed through today's episode.   It was a status quo, pointless episode.
    • I agree that the costume designer has done well in giving characters a specific look-I just don't like Kat's! But I will concede defeat on this one... Now that the show is well established I am thinking about some of the choices mad re occupations and settings. I don't expect a soap to be a documentary but the workplace can be fertile ground for story, character interactions and to add a sense of realism. It's getting a little Y&R with people meeting up at eateries. Making Derek a firefighter seems pointless-he should have been a cop working with Jacob.Would have given him more airtime and purpose. Martin is supposedly an up and coming politician but we have no evidence of that. Maybe his office should have been a set-and some other characters work there. Jan could have worked there in some capacity, or maybe Ashley instead of being a nurse. Vernon could spend time there offering his expertise-which could lead to conflict with his grandson. Same with the Real estate business-we don't see Vanessa in that role. She would have more credibilty if we saw her at work. Ashley or Smitty might work there etc, with discussions of the business -listings, attending viewings etc Andre does real estate photography. Maybe Naomi could work for her father and they could have workplace battles. Discussing cases with Tomas and her dad. And we need to see Nicole at work. Finishing up with a client etc And for Chelsea and Kat some actual evidence of setting up the'purse line' Realizing how difficult it is to get a foothold. I like the idea of having a server at Orphey's being a wise 'talk to' for various characters. Just more effective use of the characters... What are your thoughts after several months of shows?
    • Finally, Days is a soap opera about drama. Wednesday's episode is soapy goodness.
