Jack's been a misbehaving brat for years and you yourself listed exmaples. I dont see why him being a rebellious teen, disrespecting adults and being a bully is all of a sudden a shocker as if it would be "out of character" for the boy.

I don't think it's totally OOC either, it's just that as a kid his snark was light-hearted and comedic. Now it's pubescent and evil. My little cousin was a sweet but playfully naughty kid and he went through an obnoxious sarcastic teen phase where he said some inappropriate comments that he needed to be called on (never stole inhalers or drove kids to rooftops, however). He was also a good looking kid that got a lot of attention from the girls and I think that's sort of the model they're going for with this recast, hotshot a-hole. Frankly, with kids on a soap it's carte blanche, hell, it's that way with adults when the writers up and feel like it. I mean, look at Amanda Dillon for example, Alexis Manta gave no indication of CS's slinky slut (we won't even get into looks and coloring).

There's a big difference between a misbehaving brat and a monster. Within a few months Jack went from a silly little thing with Sam about telling him there was no Santa Claus to terrorizing Shane on myriad levels and saying Marty wanted to be raped. They had years to tell this story and instead Jack was a bit player, at best, until this recast.

It's all plot-driven, because they believe having Jack as the new Todd gets more story. Then if they think they can get more story out of him being a weeping angel, as they turned Todd and Ford into, they will go down that road as well.

simple answer? He was SORASED. He went from 12 to 15 over night. He's older. Monsters start out as behaving brats. Teens are a bit more cruel than kids and thats what the writing is showing that. I dont see the show as now all of a sudden turning him into mini-Todd. That started happening years ago.

They had years to tell this story? Chances are OLTL wont even be around in years.

Starr was a misbehaving brat and now she's a long-suffering heroine. Matthew was a sweet kid and now he's a cold, elitist headcase/murderer. I just don't think any of this is based on character history. Everything with these characters seems made up as it goes along to me. I don't even think the writing is showing that much about the cruelty of kids, mostly because it's so rushed and because I feel like deep down we're supposed to feel sorry for him.

The stuff with Jack perving after Tea and yelling bad one-liners at anyone but Todd started in early 2009. That's what I meant by having years to tell the story. Instead they played this off as funny and cute. Only now is this supposed to be a concern.

I can buy that a kid has issues that don't surface until he's a little older and angrier. I think this is all so jarring because it's like they hit the FF button on not only his physical aging, but mental/emotional aging as well (he's no longer a chip off the ol' block brought in for laughs, but older and eff'd up). People used to always compare little Matthew to a Peanuts character and suddenly he was a real prick to his parents. That could be called OOC too, but it worked. I do see what you're saying though. It's all plot driven, that's just the way OLTL operates. And sometimes they "get it right" and the characters as we know them fall into place. Other times, it's glaringly obvious that they're trying to drive an agenda and make something happen. All I know is, I don't have to buy what they're selling nor do I plan to. They can manipulate the story and characters all they want, but I won't be manipulated as a viewer. Look at Ford, the way they have pushed and morphed that character trying to win us over is practically insulting, they have not been subtle or slick about it (take it Miss Viki...) a-tall!

and neither character was SORASED. The same actors which played them from pre-K are still in the roles today. Jack has been recasted and aged several times

Im pretty sure they didnt have this bullying storyline in mind back in early 2009. Its not something that was brought up till recently, most likely bc of all the press coverage its been getting nationwide

She didnt see anyone as she never opened the door. The door was locked

OLTL has done variations of this bullying story several times now. First with Starr when she got pregnant, then with Matthew when he was in a wheelchair. This one is more extreme but I feel like that's mostly because they want to hype this new Jack and ultimately make him into the victim.

I don't think SORAS has to mean extreme personality changes. It never really did for Joey. I think the show just has no ability to tell a story for more than five minutes at a time.

I guess it's the sloppiness that bothers me more than anything else. Matthew's story has been horribly written. The only reason he became bitter was to pave the way for Danielle. Then he was just her boyfriend. Then he became a classist prick in order to hype her and Nate. Then he vanished. Now he's a twitchy murderer.

It's the same with Jack. There were opportunities all along and instead it's sputtering and sputtering until they find their new Todd/Ford and suddenly it's yet another I'm-raging-love-me-love-me routine.

exeept I dont think SORASibng has done an extreme personality change here. I only bring it up bc you said you dont feel the story was told organically and went too fast instead of a slower deveolpment over years. Well had they not SORASed him, the show coudlnt have put the FF on the plot to get him to where they needed him to be for it.

I actually think they could have told this story with CPL, since he looks about the same age as Austin Williams, and that could have spaced out Jack's behavior as being increasingly dangerous over the last few years, when the characters had little else to do anyway. I think it would have worked better than the current mess, where Jack goes from Dennis the Menace to a nightmare almost overnight, and where I can't buy the bullying because I keep assuming they are more interested in ultimately making this Jack recast into their next junior leading man.

Oh I love CPL and wish he had stayed in the role but I think the main reason they decided to go with someone that looked older was bc he looked younger than he was. He does look younger than AW to me and they wanted someone who physically looked like he could be a threat to Shane
