The original Upstairs, Downstairs is my favourite tv-series ever, so I was both excited and fearful when this new series was announced. As it turned out it was the fear that was proven right. The "new" Upstairs, Downstairs was, in my opinion, vastly inferior to the original series in every way.

Practically everything: the acting (Keely Hawes!!), the writing, the overall feeling......

I admit that I'm horribly biased, since I love the original show so much, and I might have had a more positive view of the new show if it had been a completely new project. But even then I don't think I would have liked it very much. It would have been just another costume drama in a long row of costume dramas from the UK, and not one of the better ones. It lacked the charm and heart that I get when I watch the original Upstairs, Downstairs.

 Thank you!

An interesting bit of trivia that many people might not know is that the show actually had its world premiere here in Sweden. SVT (our national broadcaster) had bought the first six episodes and began airing them on July 22nd 1971, roughly three months before the show premiered in the UK.   :D

In memory of the recently deceased Jean Marsh, here's an Upstairs, Downstairs reunion from a special Happy Birthday BAFTA broadcast (celebrating 50 years of the BAFTA Awards) in 2007.

Since this reunion we've also lost Meg Wynn Owen, Christopher Beeny and Jenny Tomasin from among those seen here.

Funny how no one commented on Jean Marsh's (Rose Buck) Passing here, if she had a legacy it was this series

I think it was mainly mentioned in the Memoriam thread, but there was a brief mention right above your post.

RIP Pauline Collins.

What did any fans here think of the spinoff she had (that would have gotten a second series if not for the strike)?

NO! I just loved her. 😢 RIP.

It's been a while since I've seen it. From what I recall, it was very uneven. They didn't seem to know quite what to do with those characters. As wonderful as they both were, I think they worked better as supporting characters causing problems for the main characters.

Thanks for replying. I've only seen bits of the show, so I appreciate the extra info.

R.I.P. Pauline.

Both Rose (Jean Marsh) and Sarah (Pauline Collins) dead in the same year. There aren't many stars left now from this show. It's over 50 years old so that may not be surprising, but it still hurts every time one of them goes.   :(
