Y&R: Not!Malcolm Interview

It would be like recasting Nick with Carl from B&B. Can't you look at that pic and see he doesn't have the sex appeal to play the role? Can Rosanne play Jill? It's not pigeon holding the character or being shallow. Certain things are required for certain characters.

This is why I don't want Dru back either in the form of a recast or Victoria Rowell. These writers either don't care or don't realize how important these characters are. If Dru returns she'll probably be like the black characters on other soaps. Sitting on the sidelines, wheeled out for their kids or to be secondary to their white co-star in work related stories.

Well like I said in my last post, I think his skin color is PART of the equation, but the greater issue is one of bone structure. Not that DM didn't have his female fans back in the day, there were plenty of girls who crushed on Eddie Winslow, but point blank, he is no Shemar. Even Boris is more brown-skinned, but he garners that same Shemar-like reaction.

This issue is bigger than Malcolm, but I do tend to think that the predominantly white PTB have too often in the past played fast and loose when it comes to recasting black characters. You can't give me Alimi Ballard and Jason Olive or Monti Sharp and Terrell Tilford and expect me to believe that this is the same men. Generally speaking, such truths within the black community get ignored on soaps so I suppose it doesn't even matter to a lot of people, but simply put, it's hard for me to reconcile that such disparate looking versions of a character have lived the same life.

I think people might be slightly more positive if the show hadn't had such open contempt for their black characters over the past year and a half. It's just uncomfortable either way, because either this is some form of, "They all look alike," or they are, as they have done before, setting the recast up to fail and then saying, "Don't blame us, we tried," which I also believe they had in mind with the horrible Tyra/Singing Child, Tyra the new Dru, Tyra/Neil, and finally the Tyra/ Devon in Taboo Genoa City Style stories.

That's what I'm saying. No matter what mental/emotional journey of development Malcolm took, his looks were intrinsic to the character, and his popularity and staying power. You can't just remove that from the equation, and it really does seem ballsy/stupid/shocking/laughable that they would.

I honestly think that in the particular case of Malcolm, things like good acting and recasting with a familiar face yadda yadda take a back seat to what fans expect to see in that role, which is eye candy. They aren't going to recast Brnadon Beemer with Shawn from Boy Meets World. Some gorgeous new non-acting model would have garnered a more positive reaction than DM. Even KSJ, a good looking man, but at this point, even he could have been more easily recast with DM. You just can't ignore the fan reaction based on looks that SM had, fans are shaking their heads and laughing.

Yes, I had the same thought. I also thought the woman who played Kim was a very good dramatic actress, but again, she was dark.

I just read the part where Darius said he goes around calling the actors by their character names.

At least he knows he has Irna Phillips in his corner!

    • I totally understand your sloths concern about it and I agree with you. Let’s hope the show plays it’s cards right.    Further comments about the last few episodes: - I liked that one of the attendees was filming the scene. That’s realistic. I wonder if the writers will follow up with that.  - Martin and Smitty trying to drag Leslie out was very heteronormative, so perfectly in line with them two as characters lol.    As for the future: it’s obvious the Duprees will come to accept Eva one way or another, but the rivalry with Kay should be here for the long term   On the topic of acting: the only bad actors I’m seeing are Ted and Derek. Tomas hasn’t proven to be either good or bad, so far, but he’s certainly mediocre and uncharismatic. He sucks the energy out of the scenes and I don’t see any couple of women ever vying for him.
    • I’m trying to think which actors VW were working with at the time, and none of them had been there for a while. Even like Mac and Ada didn’t have that big of a part in Rachel’s storyline.  And Jamie was involved with all that movie stuff.
    • Brooke did ads before ATWT too. That probably helped get her the job. After ATWT she seemed to branch more into hosting, along with ads.  I think I saw Kelley in an ad or two, but you're right she wasn't on as much.
    •   Thanks for sharing these. I wonder if Charles might have been in the running for Adam. I know Preacher was a bit of a bad boy at times on EON, but Neal seemed to be a step down, and Robert Lupone had played a similar part on AMC. Given the huge cast turnover at this point I wonder who thought they had been there long enough to go.  Laura Malone/Chris Rich would get a remote within the next year.
    • Interesting.  It seems to allude to that statement that Warren Burton made around that time about some AW actors getting special treatment.  I wonder who was resentful about not getting to go.
    • Good morning, boys!  I figured that it was time that our Gio was introduced into the hotness thread

    • Under all of Madonna's social media today there is this wave of negative, toxic, absurd comments by Lady Gaga fans telling her how Gaga surpassed her in concert in Copacabana. I mean... Who the hell cares? Why are these fan communities so freaking toxic??? I'm sure Madonna doesn't care... But still. Have some respect for M. Leave her social media alone. Go cheer Gaga and be happy. Why come and spew hate on M??? Crazy world.
    • FYI, again, Ruth/Letitia is not in either of these 2 episodes. So that concludes the 4 episodes I had from Nov. 1983. I don't have the October episodes.
    • Eddie has begun uploading the 1990 episodes. I'm so happy about that. I was mindfully taking a break till there's plenty of episodes I can binge watch when I feel like it. Now that 1989 is complete... I can't wait to press play on February 1989 and resume where I left off.
