Seeing this latest trend in best/worst threads, I thought to start my own.

Who are some of your favourite daytime divas, those bigger-than-life, magnetic, super stylish femmes fatales of daytime? It can be anyone from a long-forgotten guest star in the '70s to the main female protagonist on the show. Villainess, fairy godmother, the characters ethics and morality are not the point.

And not to forget: is there a particularly soapy name of a female character you like? Like e.g. Dominique Deveraux (not daytime, but hey), Angelique DuVal, Helena Cassadine, those French/Italian/German/Greek sounding names, that sort of thing.

:)

P. S. If a mod could change the b in the title to a capital, I'd be grateful.

Ah yes, the preferred smoke of the Russian nouveau. :P

Alexis didn't smoke Fantasias though, if they were even Natties they were probably the Cigarettellos or MCDs.

Don't look at me, ask DaytimeFan. :P

You've tried these too, didn't you? :P

I have. :D Nat Shermans are strong though, well, stronger than Marlboro Lights, excuse me, Marlboro Golds (new legislation). But I don't smoke anymore, unless I'm having a drink with my brother or friends and I bum one.

There was an episode of Sanford and Son where Fred and Lamont were hired to move a piano out of a *very* dandy effete man's high-rise condo. He had a container full of multi-colored cigarettes that had to have been 164mm. They looked like Fantasias but I think Nat Sherman's 164's only came in white.

I like it that we have an expert on cigars and cigarettes here. :D Some say Joan smoked More in Dynasty.

Right, I've heard people guess Mores, but I've smoked Mores (120mm) and I'm positive those are not what Alexis had. Mores are a very nice, light smoke (MUCH smoother than NS), you could sit and smoke one for the length of an entire sitcom with breaks. But they are kind of "flimsy" (especially if they've been banging around in your pocket in that soft pack) and not as thick papered and compact as the cigs Alexis smoked. Actually, when she smoked in the earlier seasons, those looked more like cigarillos, they were fatter and looked more rolled. The sleek, thin, long ones she became famous for, I would guess those were NS.

On second thought, maybe it's just a 120.

Those were weird.

I wish I could find a whole More cigarrette pick. It's always a pack:

Now I'm really intrigued. How are we going to find out? You definitely think it's either Cigarettellos or MCDs?

Basically, you're saying: earlier seasons — Nats (cigarillos), later seasons — either Cigarettellos or MCDs?

No offense to anyone who smokes Mores, but though they are undeniably elegant (and usually smoked by old black ladies  ) they are a drugstore cigarette, not a premium like you'd expect Alexis Carrington to smoke. On some of those freeze frames, I would bet money that those were NS, they have that characteristic dark charcoal-brown color and sheen, not at all a speckled More. So, though I'd be willing to say with some certainty that they are NS, I cannot say for certain which kind because many of their cigs come in that brown paper. For instance, we used to get Hint of Mint and they look like that too.

There are these brown Nat Sherman's too:

But I don't think she smoked those.

We posted at the same time Sylph. :D Yes, those are the Hint of Mint (as they USED to be called) as I was saying, and the Havana Ovals are like the Cigarettellos. The thing is, and I wish I could remember episode names as it would make this easier, but I remember her smoking what looked more like Cigarettellos/Havana Ovals (which aren't as smooth-looking as they appear in those pics, but more like this: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/33/54576403_7be3939391.jpg ). Then later, more compact, sleeker cigs that could have been MCD/Hint of Mint/Touch of Clove. Also, I'm beginning to think that what I always assumed were 120s were perhaps 101s and they just appeared longer in Joan's delicate hands. Plus, keep in mind that NS has discontinued a couple of varieties, so she may have smoked one that's no longer around.

Oh, and, SMOKING'S BAD!!!

Yes, I saw we posted at the same time! :D Thank you so much, this was fun, I hope I wasn't annoying!

And, of course, it's bad to smoke.

  • Member

I wish it wasn't though.

I've always wondered if Susan Lucci smokes/d. I'd guess not, maybe something she tried but had given up by the early '80s? Who knows... There's this site devoted to documenting female celebrity smokers and her entry is unconfirmed. HBS smokes, Marj Dusay smokes, Beverlee McKinsey smoked, Victoria Wyndham and Carmen Duncan smoke(d?), Robin Strasser has a puff from time-to-time but is not a smoker-smoker, I don't know if Jess Walton still smokes... back in the day, of course EVERYONE smoked, but I wonder who still does in daytime. I'd list the guys, but this is a thread about the ladies.

I thought Marj and Jess quit. When Marj came back to GL in 2002 I think there was something someone said about she'd recently quit smoking and had also had major surgery. I can't remember.
