August 6Aug 6 Member Always AMC- Thank you!! Found the GL vault. Is the vault and The Archive one and the same? If someday I were to pursue a watch of AMC, where would the best place be to start? What month and year? I don't have your patience to wade through months or years of crapola (lol), but do appreciate watching maybe 2-3 months of crapola immediately prior to when a soap starts getting good. I like watching favorable transitions (kinda like watching Spring erupt after a long winter). Is sometime in 1994 the logical launch point?

GL in 1994 wasn't that great to me. I would use Springfield Story (German dubbed) for the missing episodes. Edited August 6Aug 6 by MLH

They’re an enjoyable collection—accessible, well-priced, and full of nostalgic charm. https://a.co/d/bNO4moO https://a.co/d/2GylZNb Personally, I prefer Schemering’s writing style. It feels more engaging to me, though I can’t say which author dives deeper into the research. Errors are inevitable, given the limited access to primary source materials. Still, both books offer a fun and entertaining recap with photos. Cool. I can't believe there wasn't anything written after the show was cancelled.

August 6Aug 6 Member Not that I'm defending the tribute to Charita---but had any other show really ever done some kind of tribute when an actor had died? With the constant backstage upheaval, I could understand the stunted creativity. But I'm not sure they have any kind of "roadmap" to follow either. I mean, this is a show that wasn't doing much in the way of a couple montage. They're still using some hoky blue-tinged framing to denote a flashback until like '88-'89. Obviously, the tribute didn't spark some kind of backlash at the time---they used it again at Christmas.

August 6Aug 6 Member What principal roles were recast in 1989 besides Mindy and Beth? I really don't count Blake because she didn't become a major role until Sherry stepped in.

Roger, Blake and Holly had ripple effects on a lot of stories that were well thought out. Speaking of bad year, 1998. Why did Holly and her brother Ken hate Harley so much? I saw a clip of Ken and it was so bad. Also, reading the background on the Norris family, both her brothers were worse than Roger!

I'm not sure what the Archive is, but that Vault is what I've been using and it's very reliable if you're looking for every episode starting at least 93/94. For AMC - gosh, that is so hard. I loved most of the 90s. You could always start with Kelly Ripa's arrival in Nov 1990, which shortly after, in 1991, starts one of the best/most talked about storylines of that time (Janet/Natalie and the well). That also starts the more gothic Wildwind era, which is highly praised. Tad also returns in 1992 which is pretty iconic. Sarah Michelle Gellar as Kendall starts in 1993 which is a great storyline. Otherwise you could start in 1994 at the tornado episodes because really good storylines spawn from that, but it's really hard to skip 90-93. 1995 has Marcy Walker return as Liza Colby (immediately after she left GL as Tangie), which is a delicious Liza/Tad/Dixie triangle. That then leads to the really strong gay teacher storyline and the live shooting/murder on air in late 95/early 96 (which I sort of think GL copied, in a horrible way, when they tried to do the Griffin teaching college kids about black history/etc and the subsequent fake public assassination). Gosh, now I want to go back and watch AMC again I know this is the GL thread, so if you have any questions, just DM me or we can talk about it in the AMC thread!
August 6Aug 6 Member I would definitely count Blake as a major recast. Yes, Blake became a bigger piece of the canvas with Sherry, but Elizabeth wasn't lacking for story. I guess three successful recasts in a year is a coup. I'm stuck on who else they'd be referencing. I don't think they'd include Samantha or Bill, who'd last been seen as children.

There is something to be said for the refocusing on characters the audience knew and cared about. There's a period where the canvas had become bloated with characters that didn't work (and there are examples of that going back to at least '84 with Kyle). Shows have had trouble reintroducing one fan favorite without ruining the balance of characters. GL brought back six in a little over a year.
August 6Aug 6 Member Does anyone know why Holly sent Harley a basket with poisoned fruit in 1998? I was reading a recap and Blake went to Holly asking for $50,000 but not Roger herself?! Another example how dumbed down Blake became. This soap is so stupid at this point, I just can't help but laugh. The money must have been so good, Liz wouldn't quit. Edited August 6Aug 6 by MLH
