Hawk and Sarah owned Company? I wondered if they owned it or if they just managed it? Only relatively sporadic episodes of that era on YT.

So Company ownership

Tony Reardon as Wired For Sound

Bea Reardon/Reardon Family

Hawk and Sarah Shayne

Reardon Family

Buzz Cooper

Lizzie Spaulding (Lizzie and Company)

Then I think it gets sold or given back to the Coopers?

Company and Wired for Sound were two completely separate entities. Company was built on to the Reardon boarding house.

Wired for Sound was a disco that Vanessa and Trish owned and Tony managed. (I'm not sure if it was physically connected to The Copper Kettle, a restaurant that Barbara Norris opened. Andy Norris was blackmailing people to keep it open. When Andy went off to jail, Trish got it in the divorce settlement. Vanessa invested in it, mostly because at the time she was a bored socialite who flitted from project to project with grand ideas for everything. Oh, and she was Trish's friend.)

The Reardons still owned it when Johnny Bauer's parents came to town. They managed it briefly. Maureen would occasionally mention having to deal with it.

I'm not sure if Maureen sold it to Hawk and Sarah, or if at some point, Bridget assumed the responsibility.

I'm also not sure Buzz ever owned Company. If he did, it would've been after Nola and Bridget left in '97-ish. I assumed at some point, the Cooper diner got a massive upgrade. Towards the end of the show, Buzz runs for mayor because Bill is going to raze the precious Diner.

Maureen must have kept ownership as I remember Ed giving Bridget the deed to Company for her birthday/to show he was proud of her at some point. Maybe Hawk/Sarah just ran it?

I think Tony was still the owner for quite some time after he left town. Kurt also ran Company for a while. (He even ran the boarding house the first time Bea left town to help Tony and Anabelle with their kid). Maybe he gave it to Mo at some point. I don't recall that ever being discussed.

Honestly, with all the writer changes over the years it, the ownership of Company probably depended on who the head writer was at any given time. I think Hawk and Sarah only ran the place. Where would they have gotten the money to buy it? I wouldn't give Hawk a mortgage. Unless HB or Alan or some other Reva admirer gave them the money.

  • Member

Well, Josh could've bought it for Hawk and Sarah. But I think you're right, I think they only ran it.

Whether Mo owned it, or simply was the only Reardon left in town at the time to deal with it---I'm not sure. When Kurt worked there, Bea was still in town, because there's an entire plot point built around her running interference while Kurt and Roxy are trying to outsmart Immigration and see Mindy and Rick on the side. Mindy and Rick move into the boardinghouse's only available room.

There's also a kind of running joke once the Reardons start dwindling in town, where random people end up serving at Company. Mindy works there, there's an episode where Henry helps out, Jessie is left in charge while an unexpected crowd rolls in, etc.

So, the ever condescending, the ever sanctimonious Mike Bauer was a rapist, eh? Figures.

I mean, SERIOUSLY.

Look, I totally understand that marital rape was not uncommon on soaps back in the day. So was romanticizing it (coughBillandLauraonDOOLcough). General Hospital did not invent that. So you kind of have to look at that in the context of the times. That's one of the reasons Roger and Holly's rape story was such a big deal. I don't think they ever dealt with marital rape in that way before (mainly because it had only recently been criminalized).

I'm guessing the Dobsons and Marland were completely unaware of this part of Mike's past. I think Bridget Dobson even admitted they knew very little about the show's history (i.e. they gave Jackie the maiden name Scott, even though Peggy's maiden name was Scott, which made viewers think they were related). All the Bauers had pretty troubled pasts. By the late 70s they became close to sterling citizens. Which is kind of sad in a way because, personally, I prefer gray characters. Certainly, much more than the self-righteous d!ck Mike became during the Marland years.

70s

Alan (before he became involved with Hope and was being blackmailed by Roger, I hated him. I thought Elizabeth should have shot him), Hillary (even before SHE became self-righteous under Marland; the character never clicked for me), Greg Fairbanks (Rita's possible baby daddy--guy literally had one job and then became irrelevant).

80s

Mike, Kelly, Bradley (yeah, I know we were supposed to hate him, but he literally made my skin crawl), Jennifer, Mark, Carrie, all the faux Bauers, Maeve, Calla, Meredith, Rusty.

90s

Neil Everest, Mallet, Buzz, J., Amanda, Ben Warren, Alan, and I honestly had no use for Ed by this point.

2000s

Jeffrey 🤢, Jonathan, Olivia, and I strongly object to what they did to Beth.

how about this for laughs..

bring on Ellen Parker as Jeffrey O'Neil's mother who is a doppelganger for Maureen. She's the opposite of Maureen of course and chain smokes and is a former prostitute who Buzz had a fling with, thus fathering Jeffrey. Ava and Marina would both be recast and be in a triangle with a returning Dr. Peter Reardon.

I remember there was speculation/fear that they were going to force Jeffrey onto the Bauer family tree. TPTB were so desperate to make the audience accept him. They should've just cut their losses. Bradley Cole was way better as Jeffrey, possibly even good but there was just WAY too much propping.

Also, how did they NOT pair Alan with Carmen. I mean, I hated them both, but they were both despicable characters played as over the top, mustache twirling, one-dimensional cartoon villains.

I’m up to April 12, 1999.

Danny takes his sister, who we learn is named Pilar, to see Carmen and she’s scared at first. Carmen is happy to see her, but says she shouldn’t have come back home and needs to go back overseas to school. Pilar says she needs to stay home now, and missed out on saying goodbye to Mick and everything else going on with the family. Carmen privately scolds Danny about Pilar being back in town and says she’ll never allow Pilar to end up like she is nor know what their family business is all about. Pilar later joins them at the table and proclaims she’s not going back to Europe, she’s staying there in SF and will be part of their family.

Long story short, Drew pours her heart out to Jesse, saying she’s been in love with him. He says he can’t deny that he’s frustrated with the Michelle situation and has enjoyed his time with Drew throughout it. She says the day he can be in the same room with both her and Michelle and he only looks at her (Drew), will be the day she believes they can be together. He grabs her face and says he’s looking at her now, just as Michelle walks in and she asks what’s going on. Jesse says he’s moving out and Drew says he’s made his decision. Michelle questions why they’re not getting along and Drew finally just says she’s in love with him and they can’t be sharing a loft anymore. Michelle and Jesse talk alone and realize things feel different because they’re different people now and they need to take time to figure out if they even want to be together anymore. She hugs Jesse goodbye and leaves, while Drew throws Jesse’s bags out and says he needs to leave. Downstairs, Michelle calls her father (Ed) and asks to stay with him overseas for a bit. Pilar then walks up and introduces herself as Danny’s sister, which surprises Michelle, but clearly makes her happy knowing it’s not a girlfriend. Danny then walks up and Michelle tells him she’s leaving to be with her dad and doesn’t know when she’ll be back.

Selena/Buzz’s plan is in motion where Buzz hires an old Vietnam buddy of his (they named “Ron”) to pretend to be an old friend of this lady that “is Drew’s mother”. They tell Drew that her name was Dorothy Nickerson and she passed away. They come up with some back story about this lady growing up rough and how Drew was actually taken away (she wasn’t given up), which broke her mom’s heart. She cleaned up her act and became a social worker helping people, which Drew thinks was admirable and now Drew thinks her mother was a good person. Before “Ron” leaves, he tells Drew that her mother is buried right there in SF, which makes Drew happy. As he leaves, Jesse is watching and stops Ron/Buzz/Selena and says he recognizes him as Buzz’s old friend that sold him a freezer for the diner and he put on a good performance there. Jesse and Selena argue a bit and her purse falls to the ground, with Drew’s baby picture falling out. Jesse sees it and realizes Selena is Drew’s real mother and calls her on it, just as Drew walks up asking what’s going on. She tells Jesse to butt out and mind his business and Selena reinforces to everyone that this is a happy ending. Later, Selena tells Jesse he better never say anything to Drew, but he says he isn’t sure he can do that. Drew goes to this lady’s gravesite and starts crying and screaming at her, saying she wants to hate her, but she can’t and she just wishes she could have known her. Jesse then shows up and tells her he can’t stop thinking about her and they hug.

Cassie tries to tell Blake that she needs to stop obsessing over Ben. Later, Ben shows up at Blake’s and he flirts and they have sex yet again. She snaps out of it afterwards and is upset with herself for doing it, but Ben then shocks her by telling her he’s leaving her for good. He tells her she’ll always feel guilty being with him, she’s embarrassed by him and won’t celebrate their relationships with her friends, and she’ll never accept that he’ll defend bad people in court. So, since she’s not strong enough to leave him, he’s going to do it for her and he walks out the door. The next day, Ben is planning to have Carmen over to his hotel suite for dinner. Blake shows up to continue their conversation from before and sees the lavish table with flowers and champagne and lashes out. They argue, he won’t tell her who he’s meeting other than it being a prominent citizen for a business date, and he makes her leave. Blake secretly watches Carmen, dressed to the nines, walk out of the elevator and head to Ben’s room. Carmen and Ben toast their champagne and Blake storms in, saying it doesn’t look like business and infers Carmen is a hooker. Oh Blake, you’re playing with fire here haha. Carmen is icy and rude to Blake and Ben finally introduces her as the matriarch of the Santos family, which Blake questions him as to why he’d get involved with the mob. Blake eventually leaves and Carmen tells Ben she will not be doing business with him until he cuts ties with Blake. Ben says he will not be put on a leash and Carmen then leaves, leaving it open to whether they will really work together or not.

Vanessa is at the police station ready to give up information on Dinah and Cassie arrives. Cassie tells Vanessa privately that if she can promise her that Dinah will never show back up and hurt her family, then she’ll agree to not bother Vanessa again nor will she have to tell Frank the truth. But without saying anything back, a cool Vanessa walks over to Frank and tells him Dinah is in Lucerne at the nunnery and that’s all she knows. Moments later, Frank comes back and says there is a major problem, Dinah is no longer at the nunnery. Vanessa acts shocked, but Cassie freaks out and says this means Dinah still plans to come back and terrorize her. Vanessa is privately concerned and wants to go find Dinah and make sure she’s ok, but Matt tries to convince her that she’ll be ok and they need to move on. I guess I’m confused because a week or so ago Vanessa told Matt this was the plan all along, but I guess the head nun Vanessa knows says she isn’t sure where Dinah is now because she ran away. Vanessa goes against Matt’s wishes and books a flight to Switzerland, which surprises Matt and Frank. Matt says she’s not going alone, he’s going with her, which makes Vanessa happy. Cassie goes back home to the farm, calls Reva and tells her what happened, and then gets another call where the other person hangs up without saying anything. She locks all her doors and windows and is nervous. Reva shows up and gives Cassie a pep talk, telling her what their mother Sarah would do, and Cassie finally says she won’t live in fear anymore.

Matt/Vanessa arrive at the nunnery in Lucerne and the head nun tells them that Dinah really did disappear without a trace and they don’t know where she is, which concerns Vanessa. The nun gives Vanessa a letter that Dinah wrote her which says she knew Vanessa would eventually have to go to the police, so she went to a different religious order and that’s all she can say. She writes that while this is all hard, she knows what she did was wrong and she deserves this, and to let Cassie know she will never harm her and she’s working to be a better person. She ends the letter saying she loves both Vanessa and Ross so very much. We then see a different nun, in an unknown location, telling a shadowed figure of Dinah that she’s taking a pledge for life by becoming a nun (wow!). Vanessa calls Ross to tell him, who is on a boring date with India. After Ross hangs up with Vanessa, he and India kiss for the first time. India leaves to put on comfortable clothes and the door rings, so Ross answers and it’s Blake, coming out of her confrontation with Ben/Carmen. Blake hugs Ross, saying she needs him tonight, but he says this isn’t a good time and asks her to leave. Blake then says she doesn’t believe that and he wants her there, but he keeps saying no, and she then takes her top off and tries to kiss him just as India walks out in her sexy nightgown, shocking Blake. Ross scolds Blake and reminds her that they’re over. Blake says she still loves him and she knows he does too. India then calls Ben to come get her woman off Ross. Ben arrives and takes Blake home, where they argue, but then Ben grabs her into a kiss and says they’re two of a kind and she kisses back. She spends the night as they have sex, meanwhile, Ross and India seemingly have sex off-screen to end their night.

Beth and Vicky have lunch and talk about their current crushes - Jim and David. David then walks in, wearing a police uniform, which shocks Vicky. He sits down with them and says he was serious about being a cop and talked to Frank and now he’s a cop. That’s wild he can become a cop overnight, but back in 1995 we see Frank going through months of police academy haha. Anyway, Vicky thinks he’s wasting his talents, but she’ll accept whatever makes him happy and David kisses her. Meanwhile, at the same time, Jim is with Cassie telling her how excited he is about dating Beth, which she encourages. They go to Millennium and run into Beth, and Beth/Jim then flirt and plan their next date.

Phillip shows up at Josh/Reva’s house angry, confronting Josh about hiring Jim. They all argue back and forth and Josh finally says he’s quitting, they’ll all sell their shares and build another new Lewis Oil. They finally agree that they’ll continue on and Josh will keep an eye on Jim, but we later hear Josh tell Reva that he was bluffing all along. Phillip later goes to Harley to vent about it, saying that Susan learned her scheming ways from Jim, which Susan overhears from the staircase. She runs downstairs and screams at him to be quiet. He tries to apologize, but she screams out that she hates him, just as Jim/Beth walk through the door. Jim lashes out at Phillip and tells the adults that he’s planning to move away with Susan to get her away from Phillip. Beth pulls Phillip aside and lashes out at him for taking her happiness away again while Harley begs Jim not to run away and to put Susan first.

A random young pregnant girl runs into the hospital and Annie helps her. She starts going into labor, but the girl keeps yelling she doesn’t want the baby. Rick helps her deliver the baby and Annie starts loving on it while the mother is asleep. Annie contemplates taking the baby home since the mother doesn’t seem to want it, but once the girl wakes up, she changes her tune and realizes it’s a precious thing, which sours Annie.

Yea, I think Mo "owned" but the writers didnt give it much thought. Hawk talked Kurt into a job and then managed it, (there is a scene at Company where Mo is bemoaning the BH loosing money as Bea insists on making big breakfasts for the boarders, but at least Company is making money)and then with Johnny's parents. And yes Ed, give Bridget Company after the custody battle to show that he trusts her. Later Buzz bought it with a lottery money win, and was going to rename it "Talulla's"after Jenna, but luckily didnt.

You woudl think they woudl have given Mo more to do by running Company instead of sitting around and waiting for Ed to to be sour.

There was a rumor that they were going to bring Parker on but dumb as hell way, a rough woman, having gotten her heart she has plastic surgery to look like Mo..(EB switched that to Jessie) I still think that Selena should have been the lost Reardon sister, played by Parker (hey we had a clone) a rough woman who was in jail and meets up wtih Abby. I think Parker woudl have loved playing that.

Or, you know, they could have WRITTEN him better. He was such a relentless @sshole. He didn't HAVE to be. Characters like that got turned around on soaps ALL THE TIME.

Alan didn't get with powerful women. He liked women who were troubled or naive who he could dominate.

It would have been cool if they had ever paired him with a woman who would have called him out on his bullsh!t (Jackie was the only one, but alas, neither was in love with the other). Carmen was just as much of a narcissist as he was. Also, Raines just wasn't good at the romance stories. I don't recall him having any real chemistry with anyone they put him with. I shudder at the thought of them in bed together.
