Y&R: Potpourri Thread 2

Since this is a TV show, as you've said, people are just calling it as they see it. Everyone is going to have a different view, and everyone who dislikes Y&R right now have stated their reasons why. Again, no one is simply saying "Y&R sucks" and that's it. People have gone into depth as to why the show isn't entertaining and is very poor right now in terms of writing and overall quality. If you and others want to ignore that, then that's up to you.

But people continue to watch in hopes that it will get better and that a better writing and producing team will come in bring credibility and a strong vision back to the show. Until then, those who are unhappy and concerned about the state of their show will talk about it, even if that's all they have to talk about when the show overall isn't very good to them.

As Cashton said, people are giving up a phrase here or a sentence there, just to try and make a small effort to "appear" to have perspective. Week before last, when everyone was talking about how wonderful Beth's performances were, the best you could do was... "Beth has been great...BUT". Instead of seeing brilliant acting and relishing it for what it is (and truly bragging on an actress who really deserves applause, not just your passing phrases), your attitude was basically "She's good, but it doesn't matter, cause she's gonna be gone by next monday". And here it is, two weeks later, and she's still here. So you either heard wrong, or was making it up just to rain on someone's parade. Your'e like a bully on the playground knocking the ice cream out of everyone's hands because you got strawberry and wanted chocolate.

Yes, and Beth is still on her way out, so it's all the same. Her purpose on the show was very short term, and was used to sooth a stupid story decision and death of a character that made no sense and the long-term aftermath has been atrocious. And with Braeden gone soon, it will be even more useless. Traci's only child is still dead, and Traci is still leaving town, so?

And my point about Beth was the story was she was invovled in, not how long she was going to be on. Once again, seeing only things you want to see, alphanguy.

You're one to talk about bullying, alphanguy, as you do it all the time. One needs to only point to that thread where you wanted people to "anoint" your feet when you thought Y&R was going a gay story. We SAW how well that worked out for you, right? You know, with people actually happy to see you not get your wish, as you were so arrogant about the show doing that particular story and totally dismissive of other people who had no belief in Y&R's writing team to do one.

And many different people are down on Y&R right now, you don't have to like it, it's the way it is. You can't change people and their opinions, live with it.

That wasn't bullying... it was sticking my tongue out and saying "I told you so". And it was actually meant to be hands on the hips, sassy, campy comedy.... but unfortunately, my damned emoticons didn't work at the time, so perhaps it came across wrong. (IE seems to have issues with the board, I started using firefox, and my emoticons work now.) And the "I told you so" was not even for the carrying out of the gay SL, it was the fact that SOW was making it APPEAR that Hamner was saying something he wans't, and Maria DID clarify, and I was RIGHT... they either got derailed, or they BOTH were lying but me saying that SOW was putting a spin on soemthing AS USUAL was accurate.

To me it was telling people they were wrong and trying to rub their faces in it, which to me, is a form of "bullying."

Then why were so saying for months that a gay story would come and trying to prove others they were wrong for doubting it would happen, given the way Phillip and Rafe have been treated by the writing team on this show since the beginning?

SOW is proven right, because a gay storyline isn't happening and Bierdz is on his way out. The only thing Maria clarified was that she's a damn liar. What happened to exploring Phillip and Rafe's "personal journeys?" Oh wait, those characters were almost never on and it never happened. Even you can see the horrible way in which these characters were written and treated by this regime.

The end result was proven right, not the statement AT THE TIME. It's like if you ahve a friend that says he's coming over, and your'e CONVINCED he's not going to. I say he WILL and you say he WON'T... he gets in his car to come over, and is killed in an accident on the way to your house... and you sit here and say... "See, I TOLD YOU he wasn't coming over!"

You do NOT know that. I'd like to believe someone is telling the truth until they are proven a liar. She might very well have lied. But I am not prepared to say she did until something else comes along to convince me. Like if Thom said she was a liar, I'd believe it. Now that Braeden's going... let's see what HE SAYS. If he STILL brags on her after all ties have been cut, that should answer our questions.

So the fact she didn't write anything for Phillip III, the fact he was barely on, and the fact that at least two times she promised "multiple" gay stories and it never happened is not enough to call her a liar?

She didn't have to do a "gay" story. She could have written Phillip and explored his relationship with his family. But he was on the backburner since he came back and she gave him nothing worthwhile to do for SIX MONTHS.

When did Thom become a saint and a lie detector test? He doesn't seem to know what's going on himself as to why his contract wasn't renewed.

Who cares? I doubt Braeden is going to do anything that smears the Bell family, who have been loyal to him for years and who he genuinely respects.

[Debra's Oprah]B-I-N-G-OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH![/Debra's Oprah]

EXACTLY! Who would go on record and completely disrespect the Bells fi-core, scabbing, crappy, or otherwise? Everyone knows that's career suicide.

BECAUSE LOOK AT WHAT THE F*CK THEY GAVE TO PLAY HER!

Traci was second fiddle, not only at her daughter's bedside, but at her funeral too? Yes, Beth deserves all the praise in the world for saving this story, but a supporting dayplayer actress' job is NOT to convey that kind of emotion. And whether it was Beth Maitland's instincts or the direct order of the directors or Rauch, she delivered. In fact, more than the call of duty, seeing as though they only brought her back to kill her daughter off and guarantee that she would be forgotten.

And even IF that's the way Y&RWorldTurner and everyone else was conveying that, what the hell does it matter anyway? He was right, we all were right. We were hoodwinked into believing this was a story about the Abbotts. And yet again, it became a pimpjuice for Billy. Embarassing.

And if that's the case, then you're the lonely little boy on the playground, DESPERATELY wanting to fit in with the cool kids who talk [!@#$%^&*] about you behind your back and say/think that you're too dumb to be better than them and their friendship and what they have.

If Y&RWorldTurner is a bully, at least he's not a dumb bully or the "popular kid on campus." At least he's honest.

Pretty laughable, considering that Maria has more money than God and probably has her vag insured by Lloyds. [!@#$%^&*] the car or the burning house. She has enough money to get more tacky, new money clothes.

Neither do you.

Who's going to badmouth

Exactly, Y&R usually goes up when there's a holiday invovled.

Let's see how they do in November sweeps, you know, when ratings increases actually matter.

It still doesn't change the fact Y&R was DOWN season to season for the 2008-2009 season and the overall trends still aren't good. So while they might have had an increase last week, it means little in the overall picture.

    • I think @Darn @Faulkner and others have a fair point re: it being an unfortunate look and coincidence. I can see their point about the two Black husbands in rapid succession, without much time in between. Frankly, based on the early casting notices I thought before the show's debut (and I still suspect) that Ted's crimes might be far worse than infidelity or a secret baby. That would've mixed it up more. It's a soap, people are going to cheat, but it might've given them more variety if Nicole was stepping out first. Still, I wouldn't trade the Leslie/Eva reveal material for anything right now. Still, Fanfic Account #3 is just looking for any weapon to attack the show for not accepting his unsolicited scripts. When it's not the husbands it's Martin, or Chelsea or Dani. He's seething it got renewed.
    • I'm pretty sure Lucy and Bridget never even have another scene together for the rest of the time they're both on the show. Bridget isn't even invited to the wedding! The lack of community feeling and continuity of non-romantic relationships during this period is very jarring. Characters suddenly only seem to interact with a handful of other characters, rather than characters across the canvas. I'm deep into 1997 in my watch right now and find that it's even stranger because the show goes back and forth between ignoring history in order to manufacture some kind of separation between characters (for example, at one point Amanda refers to the Coopers as a family that the Spauldings "barely know," despite her and Alan spending the better part of 1996 going to war with Buzz over 5th street, and Alan has absolutely no reaction when he finds out about something bad that's happened to Abby, which seems pretty out of character given how close they were in 95/96) and ignoring history in order to create a sense of community that doesn't quite fit (characters who couldn't stand Amanda are suddenly acting all buddy buddy with her). The wheels really feel like they're coming off in 1997 (although I know some would argue that the wheels started to come off years earlier). Watching the Marcus/Dahlia romance again from a 2025 perspective is so weird. Marcus is a full grown man who must be at least in his mid-20s and he's dating a teenager who is not only still in high school, but is still fully a year away from graduation, and no one says anything about how creepy that is. I feel like the buzz around Marcus gave the illusion that the show was more invested in him than it ever actually was. Even during his "big" story where he's arrested for Cutter's murder, he actually doesn't appear on screen very often. He's imprisoned, Griffin is brought on, other characters make a fuss about trying to get him out, but there's a long stretch of time where he doesn't appear at all. I've been keeping episode counts while I watch and between Cutter's death in mid-November of 1995 and the end of the year Marcus/Mambo only appears 7 times (and of that only twice in December).
    • The letter reading was very emotional, and Maeve really got to me too. I was a little worried because Vanessa doesn't give a speech at the funeral, which surprised me, but then we got the private letter reading and her true emotional reaction and I was satisfied there. The YouTube channel I watch these episodes on (if not on our Vault), also had upset commenters talk about how Nola's line about Henry not accepting her at first/seen as a gold-digger was totally untrue. It's sad the writers don't do their homework and give fans the respect (and the characters respect). And yep, Bill got up and spoke at the funeral too, which was nice.  I didn't even realize that was Sharon Leal until you said it!  I had to Google it. I loved Sharon Leal in Boston Public back in the day haha. LOL at your Reva/Josh ALWAYS commentary. What is RME though?
    • Leslie is an extreme liar and manipulator. I'm not sure what her point was in trying to convince Nicole she wasn't trying to hurt her. As much as Eva did help orchestrate the entire plot I feel like there was too much piling on. Eva never said she wanted to be a Dupree so Anita was extremely out of line for that comment.

That's positive and something to look forward to for sure, because you're right, 1996 so far isn't nearly as good as 1995. Ohh - what is Lonatrat?  Sadly you're probably right. I did feel like David was rarely seen once Marcus came on. That would have been an interesting spin, having Frank and Tina be teenage lovers and Dahlia really being his daughter. I'm getting the sense that Tina won't be seen too much anymore, as she just left Dahlia with Frank/Eleni as she's heading to jail for a while. I like the Tina actress too!  Her voice sounds a bit like Rosie Perez to me, which I love. I tried to find her online, but coming up empty. This was the only thing I could find about Tina Crede - a character snapshot video with clips and stills of her (randomly starting just before the 1:00 mark):

That's wild that the David actor is nearly 40 here! Definitely surprises me.
    • 5-6   Meh. It already looks like a scattershot week.    5-5 was actually a good episode. Damian and Lily. Phyllis finally going on the warpath that I knew she could get on with Billy and Sally. Nate started to question Audra and Victor's alliance. And I was not even bugged by Kyle and Claire.   But then there's Cole's off-screen story. Kyle and Claire going back to being whiny. And them even wanting Adam's penthouse just sounded like trying to keep the set around. And Diane shouldn't even give a flying frak about Billy's opinion. And Tessa, Daniel, and the guitars...yeeeah no.   But hey...JM looked good in that short. And those pants.  I agree. One of Y&R's good points with fans has always been that you do at least see the vets. And IN stories.
    • One of the things that I found unnecessary and a bit disturbing about Ambitions was that in almost every episode someone was holding or shooting a gun.  Jamey and Ron seem to have the same fetish.
    • I had thought that there was a Tommy Biddles on there, but then I realized I was thinking of Dr. Biddles on Santa Barbara. Never mind!
