Y&R: Potpourri Thread

What's wrong with her? What's wrong with any of the A-list authors I mentioned? None of them are Shakespeare (TM Beth Ehlers) but they can all fashion a coherent story that moves from point A to point B, etc. I just want MAB to respect *her own rules* for the universe she has created. In Stephenie Meyer's world, there are rules about what is and what is not possible. She sticks to them. You might hate what happens but she doesn't violate her own rules. Same thing for Dan Brown. The problem with MAB is that she is constantly telling us what we saw on our screen just a few months did not happen, i.e. now Sharon & Ashley are due at the same time. MAB creates a world where Adam can hook up the house with spyware but it's also a world where VICTOR doesn't think to sweep his own house or put in his own spyware? Please. It's world where DNA tests change every other day just so we can get cousins Mac & Billy together or nephew/aunt Devon & Tyra together. It's bad stuff.

Absolutely. MAB and 'em are really screwing with the audience. They're acting like a--holes and they're being very disrespectful. But Stephenie is a pain in the rear because she doesn't develop characters well so that they work cohesively to move a plot along; nor does she use her characters efficiently so that chunk of them are wastes of space with very little to contribute to the story; nor does she pace her works well, serious issues in Y&R. In fact, these elements are what I believe are among the root causes of the downfalls of a lot of soaps these days. If MAB and 'em thought as Victor would in this situation, rather than regard the plot solely, this gaslighting drivel would've been the most ravishing soap, despite Adam's murder.

And I don't even think that MAB has any rules set up, that's how zany this dimension of Genoa City seems. Tyra being Devon's aunt was never even set up properly. He didn't even know that Ana was his sister until a few months after Tyra arrived. And it wasn't as if Devon and Tyra even had a close relationship while he lived with his grandmother as a child. Thus anything Tyra represents should be taken with a grain of salt. The only thing that is certain is her love her Ana.

It's all smoke and mirrors. I assume when MAB creates the general story line, she intentionally makes situations as vague as possible so that she can f*** with our heads. The crazy thing is that if the set up were clever enough, she'd be able to pull a lot of smoke and mirror acts off. But because she hasn't been able to, we're left scratching our heads and wondering where the hell Y&R has gone.

Wasn't SoapNet's Choose Your Daddy marathon supposed to be during Father's Day weekend and not this weekend?

Does anyone have the # for Y&R's comment line or know where I can find it? The latest spoiler has me pissed enough to complain.

  • Member

That spoiler is just a rumor for now. Hopefully it won't be true.

I just want to let them know that I'm not watching this show to see

babies and dogs murdered by psychos

.Just in case TPTB are even THINKING about it. Enough is enough. There is still plenty of things I am enjoying about this show. I still love seeing the characters I've known for many years, even if some of the stories are bad, but there are things that I will not tolerate without speaking out about.

I can see why you're upset. I'm hoping it's not true. Hogan did some sick, sick stuff at DAYS. This would be like his writing. Still this is far even for him. I know MAB had scenes where Gloria nearly killed Fisher, so this may be her idea.

Why is killing an animal worse than worse than what we've seen so far (Victor maybe killing Walter, Adam killing Ashley's unborn child, MJ poisoning Summer). We hunt animals, we eat them, we wear them. If you're a vegan member of PETA, then God bless you and I respect your squeamishness. Otherwise, why NOT show an animal being killed if we're going to show all other sorts of insanity on the show.

I've complained about the stories you mentioned, so it's not either/or. We already know how crazy MJ is. If the rumor is true, then to have her kill a dog is just shock value which tells us what we already know. It also adds to the increasingly ugly tone of the show. People do unbelievably horrific things to animals and children in real life, but I don't see how that makes it great to have this on Y&R. I'm also not sure how thinking the story is sick makes someone a vegan member of PETA. I've known hunters who would spit on PETA, and they love their dogs more than anything.

Soaps are supposed to be about entertainment. The show seems so desperate to shock people that actually building a story or giving people reason to care is less and less important. Where does it end?

I don't like Gloria, but it is ironic that some are willing to give MJ a pass for intentional wrongs and yet magnify Gloria's wrongs where it concerns Abby and Fisher. We saw MJ kill a bird, obviously she killed her cat, kissed a child allergic to peanuts on the mouth after stuffing a peanut butter cookie in her mouth. All intentional acts even if she did cry a bit and rave about her pills. There is little excuse for purposelly hurting children and animals in my book because they are innocents and can't defend themselves. The writers have a talented actress on their hands but I don't think MJ/Patty will be long term.

By the way, you can go to CBS.com and go to Daytime/Y&R and they have a way to contact them. Let's just say I have offerred feedback in the past, all of which has been ignored, except a request for Lauren and Michael to get a love scene. Of course, I never expected after that scene in May, the show would ignore Lauren for June and July again.

Exactly, and I'm not feeling it on my soap at all. At least MJ didn't realize that kissing Summer would have the effect that it did. She said in her hospital scene that she only thought it would make her a little bit sick. The Adam thing was much worse for reasons we have already discussed, but again, he is more guilty of being stupid then of intentionally trying to kill a baby. In both cases, though, my sympathy is very diminished for these characters.

But intentionally killing a beloved family pet is nearly as disgusting and just shows that this pattern of darkness is going to continue. As I said, even the writers of Dexter know that killing a child or a pet is something that will lose all sympathy in most of your audience.

This is daytime and these writers have gone too far and it doesn't seem like it's going to be letting up anytime soon.

Personally I don't buy MJ's tears or her excuse that she thought Summer would only be a little sick. MJ is a psycho, not a moron. She is obviously intelligent enough to do her job very well at Jabot and easily set up Phyllis with Heather. She saw how Phyllis snatched those cookies away and talked to Summer about not eating things without an adult around. MJ's scene with Summer was just a way for Patty to rationalize for herself her deviant actions just like apologizing to the bird and Kitty. Plus as soon as she apologized she told a comatose Summer that she would have to send mommy away for a long time. MJ has no remorse for what she did to Summer and she would do it again if it would get her what she wants.

MJ has entered Adam territory and them apologizing after the fact rings hollow in my book. MAB just doesn't seem the type to go these lengths with children and animals. It just reeks of HS. I just have to wonder who is in control over there.

Was some deal made that MAB would have her pet project Philip and Chancellor story in exchange for HS to get his hands on other stories? I know it is pure speculation on my part, but something is really off with the sudden change in direction of the show the last few months.

People cut MJ slack for one reason. SH is an inherently sympathetic presence. And it's NOT about talent. Judith Chapman is very talented but she is not inherently sympathetic. SH is able to sell this wretched villain but I can understand quite easily why she was once cast as All-American sweetheart Lana Lang. To see her is love her. Once again, this quality of being sympathetic, likable/lovable has NOTHING do with talent. Instead of making MJ so dark, I wish the writers would capitalize on SH's underlying sweetness and move MJ away from monster and towards conflicted anti-heroine. It's not in the cards though I think, which is too bad.

I think another reason many root for MJ is because this quad is so full of unlikeable people. I also wonder if this is why they're having MJ get nastier and nastier, because they realized how hard it is for people to root for any of Sharon/Nick/Jack/Phyllis now. I think the same happened with Adam.

If they go there with killing Zapato, I will never watch another second of this show. This show has already lost its humanity and sense of boundaries, but that would be a step too far. Dogs are extremely precious to me.

Killing an animal is MUCH worse.
