I was asking a general question off of MarkH's posts about Usenet. Go back and look - I was quoting him talking about how fast and far this is spreading. And I just didn't understand the venom. I want to understand it, so I'm asking the people who are feeling it to explain it to me. Not defend it. Explain it. I'm trying to see all perspectives, that's all. What is it about this soap that inspires such lines being drawn between posters who've known each other and disagreed with each other for years on this board? I want to understand. We've all disagreed on numerous soaps over the years, and there's never been this kind of divide. Ever.

it makes me really sad.

One day, I'm doing it. Because I want to understand. I didn't divide an entire thread over it.

You found such joy in finally showing MarkH "the error of his ways" in LIKING something on the show. I don't understand it. If somebody's liking it, why can't you just let them like it?

I don't know. We disagree all the time, and it's fine. Yet with Y&R, it becomes VERY personal. And I don't get it. I want to though. If anything so it makes sense to me.

I will admit I sometimes resent a show more if the soap press goes apesh!t over elements I hate (this happened for the years and years Hogan was at ATWT -- I will never forget Julia's rape of Jack being praised for it's comedy element), but those at Y&R seem to be actively involved in interviews and scoops for people like Nelson Branco, so that makes it more difficult to separate the two.

I hope no one ever has to feel bad for liking the show. I can see where people want to defend the show. I guess when I see parts of the show I enjoy, I think about how much better they should be, and while no show can be close to perfect, many of the decisions Y&R has made over the past year I find so wrongheaded and I wonder if anyone is in charge of this show. I think the good acting and the occasional flash of great writing enables them, and for that reason, I almost resent the rare moments of quality, because then we go back to laughing at Jill for filing nails, or endlessly ambiguous, rushed, empty moments like what's happened so far Adam/Rafe, or Sharon twisted into a pretzel by plot contortions. And that's the stories which do at time have some promise. I do like the Phillip story so far, but I'm wary of what is to come.

I do see the merits of the glass half full approach, and I'm sorry if I ever stamp on any of that positivity.

The definitive answer I do not have. And I haven't found it so fascinating. This was a soap that even in its worst days was very different from the rest of them. The soap that kept a high degree of respect for the fans & viewers. Then when Bill Bell died, because of so many great moments & stories he gave them, people were patient and forgave a lot of things, waiting for the next era of greatness to come. Instead, the quality just kept deteriorating to the point where the show became unrecognizable (Lynn Latham).

After the hilarious departure of Lynn Latham and another Bell heading the show people probably thought: Well, after Lynn Latham, it certainly can't be worse. It was written by someone who knew the show and its history very well. This didn't run so smooth, fans found out Griffith re-wrote the bibles and scripts, so they blamed all the dreck on him.

But then... It all plummetted so quickly, so appallingly, so inexplicably. Too much darkness, deviousness, crazy people walking around town, blatant re-writes of past stories, un-needed retcons, the worst soap cliches, legacy characters turned into irredeemable wackos... All in a blink of an eye.

So what's one supposed to do? Sit and watch? No way. Obviously, there are at least two types of fans: those who've come to accept the end of this genre will soon come and those who know it too but still want to see them written with the minimum amount of quality writing until the end.

It's cool, Carl. I totally understand where you're coming from - and believe me, I agree with you on everything you said. I see a lot of room for improvement. I just think it's really awful it's divided the Y&R fans on this board the way it has. It bums me out. What can I say - I'm a sensitive soul. :D

Y&R fans are very protective of their show, not just a couple or character or whatever, but the show as a whole. You have to keep in mind that until Latham, Y&R had a very distinct style of storytelling that made many of us fans in the first place. The Latham era was the first real era where the show moved away from that kind of style and it's continued with MAB and company, and it kind of makes it worse, since MAB is Bill's daughter-in-law, and her inexperience in writing and producing soaps is well known to the general audience. Most of us were fans way before the Latham or MAB eras, we knew what Y&R was like and we know how the show functioned until 2005 when some idiot execs decided that the #1 soap that was leading in the demos too needed to "contemporize" and change its style of storytelling in an effort to be more hip to teens who were probably never going to watch anyway and to please corporate America.

We know what Y&R was like and we know what it should be. I just saddens us more so than fans of other shows to see where this once great show that once had a distinct style has gone.

You're right with all of this, Sylph. (See? I know when you're right. ;)) I just wish those two types of fans were a little more respectful of each other, that's all. But I know how much you hate the "Can't we all just get along?" in me. I just really used to enjoy talking about the good and criticizing the bad, and now it just feels like every time somebody posts something they like about the show, they're immediately jumped on with ten posts about how it's bad and they're defending shoddy material.

I wish it was stronger. It's not. And overrunning the boards with threads about it isn't going to change it. It's just not. The only thing that will change it in time is falling ratings. And if they continue the way they are, you'll probably get your wish. And then be dancing in the streets. And that's cool. God knows when DH is out of a job, I'll join you. LOL! But I don't give the Days fans who love the show crap for liking it. I just expect the same courtesy in return.

Yeah, I hear ya. I guess when Bill Bell died, I just jumped to the conclusion that it would only be a matter of time, so I prepared myself for it. I don't know how anybody couldn't see the writing on the wall.

I agree.

I honestly don't have a problem with someone liking Y&R even though I "attack" the fans often. I "attack" because of the same thing you tried to achieve here: I so desperately wanted them to convince me there's some good on this show (apart from Chloe, Nina, Jill & Kay). No one managed to do it. Everyone made such bizarre points where I was like  all the time. And then I just gave up. The fact that some of those people turned the weekly Y&R threads into vulgar, pornographic trash has not helped one bit. And everyone seems to ignore this point. The sheer amount of talk about naked men, phalluses, pornography, flirting between members, "drunken posting" and all other lurid awfulness that goes into it is... Appalling.

I have only scratched the surface. Members interested in more might try to search your, Carl, bellcurve, cara mia, CSF, Loyal's... posts. There is so much hoorrrrible storytelling going right now, it is embarrassing.

I totally agree! That is quite disturbing, yet it seems to slip by.

And it goes both ways, whenever someone posts something negative there are also posters who constantly jump to defend the show and prove those "negative" posters wrong. It takes two to tango, the problems in that thread don't lie solely at the feet of those who constantly critique everything about the show.

I totally agree, if someone wants to focus only on the bits of positives on this show, fine, no one is stopping them. But there's a lot going on that isn't pleasing many longtime fans, and when the same stuff occurs in every episode, they should expect posters to point that out repeatedly. Often the arguments get too personal and out of hand, but not always. A lot of times, in those bloated threads, posters just disagree peacefully and it goes on and on.

Well, I don't know about the vulgar part. I'm not really aware of all of that, except for a couple posts that I thought were funny, and then I moved on.

I totally get why you were trying to see what people liked. I guess I just don't think what people like is ever "bizarre." You may not agree, you may not like it - but it's never bizarre. People's likes are just that. They're likes. I know I can't explain why I like something. I just do.
