Y&R: Potpourri Thread

According to Sara Bibel, Sony Pictures Television President Steve Mosko visited the Y&R set last week. He talked to the employees about the budget cuts and Y&R's TWO YEAR renewal from CBS.

He apparently thanked Billy and Maria for their leadership, but we know that means nothing. Sony was always going to the Y&R set during Latham's run. Here's hoping Sony gets more invovled and fires the hacks that are running this show into the ground. Force some change on this show, Mosko!

This tells me that Sony does in fact care about what goes on at Y&R..

Sony Television President Convenes A Young & The Restless ‘Town Meeting’

Last Friday Sony Pictures Television President Steve Mosko visited the Young & The Restless‘ studio for a Town Meeting with the show’s cast, crew, and production office staff. Mosko runs Sony’s entire television division including primetime, cable and syndication. Sources say he wanted to speak frankly with employees about the show’s recent two year renewal by CBS. The new contract cuts the license fee, which means even more budget cuts. Some production office staff and crew have already had their salaries slashed. Mosko discussed the current state of the show and praised the leadership of Maria and Billy Bell before opening up the floor to questions. The meeting was described by an attendee as a pep talk to let the staff know that their hard work was appreciated. Of course, Mosko may hope that future contract negotiations will go more smoothly than Melody Thomas Scott’s now that the cast knows that the show has no money to spare. CBS daytime president Barbara Bloom did not attend the meeting. Nor did Eric Braeden, even though he was reportedly on set Friday.

It is, in my opinion, impressive that Mosko met with the staff. This is a terrible time for the entire entertainment industry. The prevailing attitude is that anyone with a job should be grateful. Talking with rank and file employees is unusually respectful behavior for a studio head. Few executives at Mosko’s level take an interest in daytime. It certainly does not seem like any senior ABC/Disney executives are taking paying any attention to the soap operas that their company produces.

Mosko’s attention to Y&R is not altruistic. Both Y&R and Days of Our Lives are important to Sony because the shows are very successful internationally. The license fees the studio receives from the networks pays for the production of the show. The studio then makes a considerable profit selling Y&R all over the world, from Australia to Israel. Since Sony is the only major studio not to own a broadcast network, its profitability is entirely dependent on the shows that it produces. (As a Japanese company, Sony is barred from owning an American broadcast network.) I have no idea whether Mosko’s meeting will make the cast more amenable to pay cuts or improve morale. Instinctively, I doubt it will make much of a difference. There is no way to make anyone in any industry feel good about making less money. But at least for a little while an executive made an effort to treat daytime staffers with respect.

In the other part of her column, she talks about Deacon's rape of Amber...

This means... Steve was there to talk business. He certainly didn't go to congratulate Bill and Marie Arène! A clear ultimatum has been given. Sony will use full artillery, naval and air force, if necessary. :D

Yes, let's hope so!!!!

And yes, he was so there to talk business and I'm sure the record low ratings from the day before added fuel to the fire.

I have a feeling Sony isn't very happy with the show right now and this was their first attempt in trying to correct a few things. :)

I really don't like MM as Adam. Putting aside the fact that Adam was completely destroyed as a character, the acting of this actor just doesn't suit the character. Those facial expressions are just sick.

Funny... he played a sleazy character on VM with so much style, yet he can't pull that off here?

On primetime shows, you get five or six or ten takes to nail a line of dialogue. On daytime, you get one. Two, if you're really lucky.

I know, I can't expect perfection.

The writing destroyed this actor's entrance as well. With Engen even until the end I was sympathizing with the character and I knew there was a different side of him, but ever since this one took over it's been nothing but villian-of-the-year stuff. No sympathy, no emotion, just pure evil. Even when he talked to his mother it all looked phony.

Muhney is suckage. I said it when he got there, right in the first episode.

I think that's what they wanted from this character, and why Engen just didn't want to play it anymore, regardless of this inane gay twist that they totally botched and no kiss was ever shown on screen for.

They wanted this character to be a cartoon villain and to bring some type of hallowed shock and awe appeal that has no substance to the show, since that's what Maria, Hogan, and Scott only go for.

These head-writers dug their own graves, so let them lay in it now.

Poor Tracey Bregman. No Lauren since June 12. That's a huge kick in the butt.

I'm starting to come around to this thinking as well. Especially because of the expressions.

I know that Paul Rauch is touted as being there only in a production capacity and all, but having seen him in action on GL, I wouldn't put it past him to have a finger or two stirring the pot on this one. Annie Dutton would have come across as the cartoon villian for the ages if not for the work of Cynthia Watros. In any other actress' hands, the character would have been very one-note. And it was when she returned in the form of Teri DeMarco.

Just sayin.

Rauch doesn't write these stories though, Maria and her henchmen do, and seeing that Sheffer in particular recycled an offensive rape plot from his DAYS and brought it to Y&R, I know it's these writers.

The CBS press release when Rauch joined said he was handling the production, and Maria was handling the story content.

Furthermore, Maria is both the HW and the Co-EP, and she's married to one of the owners of this show. She isn't being forced to be there, and she lets all of this offensive and badly written crap make its way on screen.

Deacon will never serve jail time, I'm sure. Amber will never press charges, she'll just become the <expletive> who betrayed Daniel. The world keeps moving forward and daytime keeps offering these disgusting 'rape as romance' storylines, ignoring how they sicken fans. Daytime writers are blinded by their own presumed brilliance.

So, back to the Steve Mosko visit to the Y&R set. Hmmm, out of all of his responsibilities for Sony, handling both syndicated and primetime shows, I do find it strange he went to the set of one of Sony's soaps to talk business and hold a "town meeting" with everyone invovled in the show and to speak about the budget cuts and Y&R's two year renewal.

It seems like Sony is finally taking a hands on approach in relation to their ownership of Y&R. As I said before, I wonder if this was the first step on Sony's side in trying to intervene in "saving" Y&R. I must wonder if they've heard the fan reaction, saw the focus group results, the falling ratings, and overall negative feedback and decided to slowly try to bring change to this show. Who knows, maybe in a few months, this current writing and producing regime might be fired and replaced. I'm keeping the hope alive. :)

It's nice to know Sony does in fact care about this show though...

LOL! I love how you've created this whole back story and ulterior motive. Very Bill Bell-corporate stories-soapy of you. :-)
