Yes, essentially, that is what happened. However, I never knew it if he didn't want to be at ATWT. And, in fact, there were things that made it seem that he was happy there. He & Lesli Kay worked so well together. And, AW had been such a stressful set while ATWT at least then had this reputation of being such a happy set. It's possible that you are entirely correct but if so, it was a well-kept secret, at the time. And, I don't think his leaving necessarily meant anything was wrong. It was just time. He'd played Jake McKinnon long enough.

It's really funny. I never knew any daytime actors had "Pay or Play" contracts. And, now, I've found out that both RKK and Tom Epln had them.

I always thought Eplin was let go from ATWT for bad behavior. That's what it seemed like at the time. The finality of his exit; being killed off in an abrupt, rather silly way; killing him off after going through all the trouble to bring him on to ATWT; the lack of press about it, after his playing the character for 17 years; and then his disappearance from the industry -- all this seemed to imply that stuff went down BTS. Was this impression all wrong? Did he really just walk away by choice?

At the time that Tom finished at ATWT I lived  in Brooklyn & my partner was the Digest editor for Guiding Light & the editor for ATWT was her close friend & colleague & a close personal friend of mine. I cannot imagine any way that this could have happened & us not know about it.

Here's a screenshot of the NBC video, from Alan Locher's facebook

And then in the comments to that facebook post, someone confirmed that the property records show that that the address is connected to a company that is connected to Tom Eplin, which Alan Locher acknowledged in reply to that comment.

Well, I am here to tell you that you better watch yourself, EFulton will take you to task & you better believe it!

We are so awful, aren't we? To our beautiful people. NOT allowing them to change.

Do you recall that DIGEST cover with him & Ellen & the only prop is a ladder.

My heart goes out to anyone who lost a home.

MY recollection is that there was some bad blood/displeasure surrounding Tom Eplin's departure from ATWT. I have no idea what that entailed though. Once Jake raped Marley, I had no interest in the character, and he should have been written off the show. I don't think Eplin was important enough to the show to romanticise another rapist. At the time of his switch to ATWT, I imagine a lot of ATWT fans were extremely confused that his character suddenly showed up on their show and hogged up air time. Jake's death on ATWT was a decade too late in my book.

I dont know who Efulton is...hey beutiful people had their beauty which is more then the rest of us can say. I always thought he was hottest when he filled out a bit, but people were calling him fat back then.  It is good to know the hotties of today that people drool over and wish that they could be with end up like the rest of us tomorrow..so kids. always marry for personality!!!!

I never knew he was rapist on AW..but he fit in well on ATWTbut I agree he took over and I could care less about the AW people guest appearances.

He is a fan who frequents this topic. I did not realize you are new here. Welcome!

You know, or maybe you don't, but anyway, at a certain period, he really built up his muscle content - and it looked VERY good on him. However, as people age & it's harder for them to keep up with those kinds of workouts, that muscle mass can turn to fat.

That, his raping Marley, is in itself a huge controversy. NBC insisted that HW Donna Swajeski rewrite it so Jake raped Marley. It was her strongly held opinion that Never Under Any Circumstances would Jake rape Marley. (I am one of many fans who agree with her.) She & the network fought over this. Finally she lost the battle & had to do the rewrite. But, she decided then & there that when her contract came up she was quitting - and when it rolled around, she did quit. So, they lost a writer they liked.

On ATWT I really liked him with Molly!

It's not like it's a rule or anything. But, how is it if you're not new that you didn't know about Jake raping Marley?

And, to @chrismlI would ask you, when you wrote Jake off, which is totally fair to do with a rapist, did you know about the controversy where it is suggested that it was totally OOC to write that Jake did so?

    • A little too much focus on Chad and Cat today but I enjoyed the episode. I have a feeling that Jennifer’s gonna get dumped on though, even though I think that her anger is completely understandable and justified. And honestly, Ron is finally gone; Abigail can come back now.  But, welcome back, Anna! It was nice seeing Carrie have scenes with her mother. Christie Clark and Leann Hunley have never really had that many scenes together and to see them have them now is really nice. I’m glad that both of them were there to comfort Marlena too. Their words were definitely the thing that Marlena needed to hear. Btw, with all this talk of Noah, does it mean that he’s gonna be introduced soon? Amy, revealing that John changed her flat tire many years ago seemed a little random though. I would rather she have said something about how everybody in Salem knows of John Black because of how he was always such a hero. But at the same time, her story also showed what a great guy John was.  I liked Kate’s scenes with Philip too, and her promise to get back at Xander for what he did. And since we didn’t see JPL in the bed, did he need some time off or something? And yeah, everything involving ‘One Stormy Night’ still seems very Ron-like to me.
    • The second photo featuring the late John Spencer is from the Law & Order episode, "Prescription For Death", which was the (second) pilot/first episode all the way back in 1990! He played the father of a daughter that had gone to the ER for a mere sore throat but ended up dead because the doctor on call was drunk and had given her medication that she had an adverse reaction to, after receiving some other medication. So, he will always have that great distinction in addition to The West Wing. (The first pilot, "Everybody's Favorite Bagman", was filmed in 1988! The show was offered to CBS, but they passed. In syndication, it is oddly placed as the sixth episode of Season 1. And Roy Thinnes played DA Alfred Wentworth there. When NBC picked up the show two years later, Thinnes declined to return, and that's how we got Steven Hill's DA Adam Schiff.)
    • exactly. I can understand schadenfreude if it were real, but a lot of this is just an engineered distraction.
    • Days of our Lives S60E204 – Thursday, June 5, 2025 Okay, today’s episode was kind of boring. It was nice seeing Jack and Jen back, but they wasted an entire episode on Jen chatting with Julie - one scene would’ve been enough. Also, why didn’t Jack and Jen go comfort Marlena? And wouldn’t a flashback with Jack, Jen, and John have been great? Maybe something from the Cruise of Deception era? Bottom line - it feels like once John’s memorial is over and the returning fan favorites leave Salem… the show’s going to be dull again.
    • Everything with Elon and Trump is a stunt. If people, and the sycophantic press, are talking about their "feud," they are not talking about Republican plans to gut Medicare, Medicaid, and the ACA.
    • I can't fully remember, but I don't think they tried to get Beth Chamberlin back. I think Laibson/McTavish likely saw Beth as old news and wanted to move Philip on; either that or have her return only when Philip was closely tied to a new woman. Thanks as always for these recaps. I think I had stopped watching around this time and mostly kept up by reading in the soap magazines. Bridget's degradation was horrible to watch, as the character had grown so much over the years and was clearly regressed just to be a foil for a "hot" couple viewers had zero investment in.
    • Having the majority of the cast on those low numbers is no way to tell story. And just 2 dayplayers for the month. So sad for the #1 soap.
    • I believe it was. And this is actually one of the cases where I wouldn’t mind some dumb soap opera bringing back from the dead. They gave Mishael, Amanda, with all of Hilary’s connections but none of the personality except for fleeting moments. Hilary absolutely should’ve just left town. They decided to kill her and the baby. Just baffling,
    • That was Mal Young right? He thought a tragic death was a better option than crafting a story where Hilary leaves town. Was it a case of punishing someone who wants to leave? And then they have to jump through hoops to bring the actress back.
