Wait. Stop the presses. Jarlena aren't the reason why the ratings go up or down?

That removes one reason why Sheffer's tenure on the show went up in smoke.

LOL.

Sheffer's ratings sucked because he was an awful match at Days.

AMen.

The fan bases can say whatever they want was the reason but the biggest and main reason was that Sheffer was not right for Days. The whole time he was there Days did not feel like Days. He didn't know how to write Days.

Add to that the fact that Sheffer is a good writer only when he has a strong person over him and guiding him or working alongside him.

He is good with Bell and he was good with Culliton.

I wonder if ratings ticked up to the point where GL was giving 3rd place or even BB a run for it's money in the ratings by summertime, if CBS would have a change of heart or if they're really just more concerned with 'cheaper programming' for daytime all together?

I doubt that GL would ever see third place again, cancellation or not. As you mention, they're probably just concerned with cheaper programming, but it's a shame. CBS is in first place in both daytime and primetime. They could have kept GL on the air, even though it may be losing them money. GL is an institution, and CBS should be embarrassed for cancelling the show. All of the soaps are suffering, not just GL, and to cancel it spells additional doom for the industry. CBS has just speeded up the process.

I disagree that GL's long lifespan worked against its survival. Soaps do not have to have a cycle of life and death, they change with the times. Soaps are not a person, they do not suffer from being "immortal", good grief what a comparison. Is "immortality" bad for the Constitution?

I love my soaps, don't get me wrong - but did you really just compare a television show to the United States Constitution?
