Any Capitol Fans Here?

I was reading a Digest article from around 1989, where they talked about crime stories, and Henry Slesar said a moment he really loved, during his tenure as Capitol headwriter, was bringing back Clarissa's dead husband or whoever, because that was a story about older people. Did you like that story?

That story, particularly their emotional reunion, was listed in some soap magazine's greatest moments list, I've only seen bits of that s/l. Yeah, Baxter (Ron Harper) was in town for months before they knew who he was and Clarissa fell for him over Mark. I think that contributed to Mark losing it/the reveal of him being a secret spy villain, or whatever. Actually, he may have even been involved with Baxter aka Garrett in the undercover spy world or something.

In the end who did Clarissa stay with?

I had also wanted to ask if you were interested in any of the Capitol preview type of stuff (text not photos) that they had in some of the Digests. I have a few from 1985 and 1986.

Sure!

She stuck with Baxter. Mark was killed in a shoot out at Lincoln Memorial (real tasteful). I'm almost positive James Lipton was responsible for that, and from what I gather, it was a VERY unpopular story development (making a charming, upstanding guy like Mark a trader/spy).

I prefer Mark, he's a cool witty guy before they make him a traitor. Jarrett/Baxter is more of a vanilla good guy. I'd like to see more episodes involving his reveal, like his first scene with Myrna for example. Him leaving Myrna for Clarissa was the end of the ladies' since childhood friendship and the beginning of a bunch of mess.

Here's a clip (in English!), oh, and that so is not the Lincoln Memorial, remembered it wrong:

SFK was there ever anything on the show about Trey being in love with Clarissa? I was looking in a Digest from around late 82 or mid 83 and they said that the original writers were going and that many of their stories might be changed, and one new story being suggested was Trey having feelings for Clarissa.

Wow, yeah, I've never seen or heard anything about Trey and Clarissa, now THAT would have been interesting. Would have drove Myrna crazy and created a lot of drama for Trey's career (older woman) and mixed emotions for Clarissa given the two families' history. In the pilot movie, Trey's limo almost mows Clarissa down while she's out jogging and Trey makes some smart remark about one less McCandless.

I agree, that would have been a really interesting storyline. How old was Trey supposed to have been? Early 30s? It would have been about a 20-year age gap which would have made for a field day for the Washington gossip hounds. I imagine it would have caused some drama between her and her sons, especially Tyler.

Yeah, I guess that's where Conboy first worked with Constance.

Yes, Trey was early thirties and Clarissa was latest forties/early fifties. Tyler and the other boys would have had a fit had she started dating Trey and Myrna would have flipped her wig (literally).

I just re-discovered this board since I've been looking at my Capitol tapes again. I love Capitol and wish I could have seen the whole show. I was just a kid when the show originally aired and discovered it after I started watching Constance on General Hospital. I liked her so much on GH that I looked up some of her other work and, through the generosity of fellow Capitol fans, I've gotten copies of a good many episodes, especially from the later part of the show's run (1985-1987). My favorite character, of course, was Clarissa and I preferred the McCandlesses to the Cleggs. I wonder if the series in its entirety still exists on tape somewhere and if it will ever be released on DVD. After seeing what I have of Capitol, I think I prefer Constance as Clarissa rather than Helena. For one, Clarissa was a much larger role. Helena, as entertaining as she can be, is such a peripheral character on GH, where Clarissa played a central role on Capitol. The roles are pretty much polar opposites of one another.

I wish I could see Constance on Love is a Many Splendored Thing as well.

Myrna would have gone apoplectic! LOL Paula wouldn't have minded, however;)

    • I hope for a multi-year renewal, too! This is the only show I've been excited to see the next episode in forever. Considering their demos are quite decent. the initial episodes showed there is still an interest in daytime, and it has helped to boost the rest of the soap line up at times, it should be around for a while.

    • I agree.  How many times did we have to watch Bobby vs. J.R., or Blake vs. Alexis, knowing that nothing would change at the end, and that everything would go back to status quo, so that they could fight the same, exhausting battles all over again?  If nothing else, I give FC and KL credit for trying to keep things fresh, even if I think FC, in particular, went too far in the other direction and became unrecognizable even to the most diehard fans. Exactly.  Plus, because viewers were so burned out by the kind of serialized storytelling that was beginning to affect even half-hour comedies, I think MSW represented a nice change of pace.  You didn't have to watch every week, or watch from the beginning of each season, to know what was going on with Miss Fletcher.  Instead, you could watch a complete story in one episode, de-stress from whatever had happened in your own life last week, gear yourself up for the week ahead, and be okay. If you notice, though, there were differences between those two shows and what Aaron Spelling had produced in the past.  For one thing, there was a greater emphasis on youth; and while characters on 90210 and MP certainly had more disposable incomes than the average viewer, their wealth wasn't as opulent as what we'd seen on DYNASTY or on "Hart to Hart."  Even the battles among Alison, Amanda, Billy and others at that advertising agency weren't as histrionic as those between Denver Carrington and ColbyCo.
    • I saw a conversation yesterday with Liam with the 7 dwarves hat and Steffy -  I know she did not say re: Hope and Liam said - well look at Finn and you forgave him right?      I know I did not hear Steffy say “well but you can’t compare that to…”  For *uck sake someone call the bitch out!?     You’re right, we shouldn’t compare your forgiveness for the dude with devil spawn seed whose daughter locked you in a cage along with crazy stepmom/mom/Grandmother who has also SHOT YOU BOTH - and multiple murder attempts but you have to exist with them / Hope’s part in a takeover which you know was FAR LESS THAN CARTER BECAUSE HOPE IS NOT AN ATTORNEY…. Goodness no, no the same thing at alllllllll.   When they do Steffy’s absence at least let it be because they all find out what a manipulative ho she is in her own right.
    • I think a lot of us still agree with that. I do hope that the resurgence in the soap world with Beyond the Gates will push ABC to either bring back these shows or produce a newer one.
    • So, this was fun. Elsewhere, friendly to polls, a poll on what do you want to see at the Nurses Ball. The Gio reveal got 18%, for Blaze to return & sing also got 18%, for Jennifer Hudson to do a cameo & sing got 10% and for Lucy to lose various parts of clothing got 9% but the huge one was the reveal of Drew/Nina sex which got a whopping 45%!
    •   I liked the effect of the curtains closing. Yeah it was like the end of Act I.   Or maybe they are simply trying to emphasize the drama of the end of an episode -- instead of a random abrupt end that has happened in some prior episodes.
    • I posted this in the behind the scenes thread but I know this thread is busier so wanted to mention it here as well. During their instagram live yesterday, Daphnee Duplaix and Trisha Mann-Grant mentioned that they will find out this month if the show is renewed for another season. Just a heads up so we can keep an eye out for an announcement and keep our fingers crossed for a multi-year renewal!
    • They haven't explained the ownership of the Bistro, but Doug told Holly the other day he didn't get the job there. Basically Roman just hired Doug on the spot and gave him a room.  It was really nice of Roman.  I don't know if he knows who Doug is or that he stole Julie's necklace.  That was unclear-at least to me. ETA-I feel like the Bistro might just die and people will just pretend to order food there like Leo did today.  Sophia is on bed rest so no one works there anymore.  They can use that set for something else.
    • I'm not sure how I felt about it, but I do kind of like that it felt like the show telling us this concludes the first chapter of the series. Could be interesting if they only do it for big aftermath episodes. The biggest mistake with Martin is that it's almost hard to buy his anger because we've gotten no strong scenes with him and his parents. They've all been with Anita/Vernon. I can't even remember him ever even saying one word to Nicole, even in passing.
