Has DAYS got the 2009 pickup yet?

Nothing, and I mean Nothing would make me happier than seeing Days end up on another network. Part of Days problem from the very beginning has been NBC. The network has always been more than willing to take a chance on a new soap, while not willing to invest properly in the soaps it already has. By invest, I don't mean money. It's the attitude of the network brass towards soaps that has been the problem, and it didn't just start with the cancellation rumors eight years ago.

The problem I see here is:

#1: Which soap gets cut on another network, or slashed to 30 minutes to make room? I love Days, but I wouldn't like watching another show get sacrificed for Days survival. I would be ok if the other soap were going off the air anyway, but a cut to make room would be horrible. Could CBS cancel GL, and in turn want to pick-up Days.....Nah. Days is expensive and not ranked too high in the ratings. While it pulls better demos than GL, I just don't think TPTB at CBS would reason that Days is worth it. I sure wouldn't.

#2: What happens to Days in the process? If Ken Corday still has the reigns IF the show jumped networks, would the show be worth keeping on the air? I really don't think so. If ABC would want to purchase the show, it would be the best option, cause then Ken would lose the show, and ABC would be the owner, However, would Days fit on ABC? How would they work it into the line-up? ABC has three great soaps, all unique and historic. AMC is the crown jewel of the line-up. This show has put out the best socially relevant drama year after year. OLTL is making a comeback crtically, and the ratings are starting to indicate it's working. OLTL is a powerful show with tons of loyal viewers. The you have GH. GH and Days had very similar characteristics. Both have very dynamic fanbases. Both have been built around romance, couples, and family ties. The thing is ABC already has GH, why would they want Days? I like Days more than GH, but not everyone shares my opinion. The one thing that is certain is that GH and Days share a lot of similarities. ABC would be STUPID to cut a hit show to make room for Days. If they could fit it in around ALL THREE shows, then I would be thrilled to see it move, but shudder to think that Frons has his paws on it.

#3: Fox, CW, Soapnet, and Oxygen could not support a show like Days. Days is an institution, and some of the characteristics that make this show great are expensive to maintain. Say Deidre Hall's salary, the costume design, or the huge backstage crew, they would all be unreachable. If Days went to a lesser network, it wouldn't be Days anymore. It would have the name, but no real Days characteristics. If thats the case, then I hope Corday grows a brain and lets it end with class and dignity. Days on CW, Fox, Or Soapnet might as well be the Salem High spin-off that idiot Langan dreamed up. They could afford a few young actors, some dim lights, and thats it.

So, I hope Days gets the pick up. I hope they give it two more years, the ratings tank at the end of the summer, and Higley gets the ax shortly after. I hope it then rebuilds and becomes the show we all know it can be. But if they get the ax, I hope Corday shows some class. I hope he doesn't peddle it like Ice Water in hell and make Days fans look stupid. I Hope it's allowed to go out with a bang, but in a good way. With Doug, Julie, Alice, Mickey, Maggie, Marlena, John, Bo, Hope, Steve, Kayla, Jack, Jenn, and so on gathered around the Horton fireplace singing "Always".

Frons said last year when DAYS suffered its first huge ratings decline (following Zucker's comments) that ABC has no intention of picking it up. The ratings now are where they were when Frons made that comment, so I doubt anything has changed on his part. If the show is by some miracle renewed, expect to see massive budget cuts, a la GL from a couple of years ago. Underused vets like McKay and Rogers will be forced to go recurring, others will be fired. If the show is in a sorry state now, imagine what things will look like under a budget slash. I rather the show die with a shred of dignity, instead of lingering on life support toward a prolonged, painful, and inevitable death, as GL is experiencing right now.
