Lack of Racial Diversity in Daytime

Dru is such a proud character, it would've been nice if she discussed her background or African American history in general or African American models who came before her or African-American ballet dancers before her with Lily every once in a while.

Dru did several times but with CK wanting less family scenes there was only so much VR could do.

They were way too general about it.

No they weren't. They actually did a very, very good job with that story.

Or if Dru and Neil remarked about the what it's like being Black executives. Or if they commented about how they're the only Black family in their circle of peers. Or how Gina's cooking at the GCAC is nothing like Aunt Mamie's. For goodness sakes, something!!!

Those were the type of details VR (as a writer) wanted to incorporate.

Why on a half-hour weekly program like "Sex and The City," which didn't even have to invest as much information in their characters as a soap would because soap operas are daily, are the characters more realistic? When Charlotte became Jewish, she even hung the mezuzah to hang near their door Am I asking too much? Even campy, night-time soap shows like "90210" had a Catholic (Donna) and a Jew (David) and they stated their culture every so often.

That's the problem with making Brad Jewish.

Diamont (as well intentioned as he is) lacks the ability & sincerity to properly interpret the material (especially with Latham's horrible, plot driven writing).

Had they given that story (as badly written as it was) to an actor like Doug Davidson it would've been much stronger.

How do you come home to Neil and Dru every day and not pick up their speech patterns?

Amen.

Not just Neil & Dru but Walter, Lillie Bell, Mamie, Olivia & Nate too. None of CKLily's relatives talk the way she does.

It's like Tammin's Colleen speaking with her Australian accent as if Brad & Traci allowed her be raised by a band of kangaroos.

What's up with these actors demanding so many things? Jeez. So sad for you if you don't want to work with someone. But, dammit, just do your job.

As for the Devon storyline, I guess it's up to the viewer if it was good enough or not. I just thought that would've been a good opportunity for the writers to talk about Dru's foster family experience more. I'm not saying it was dreadful, as that was one of the last good Y&R storylines (I thought), but it could've been better.

By you saying Victoria wanted to incorporate that type of storyline only proves how they haven't depicted her culture as well as they should've. But hey. Maybe WHEN she comes back, she'll get what she wants just like CK did.

any actor that demans something or denys to do what is written needs to be axed, IMHO, unless they have a valid reason. fighting for your character is one thing, not wanting to interact with someone because you may not like them is another.

No Sonny/Lainey...Lainey and Lucky yeah...but I quit my GH problem a couple of weeks ago and it is an insult to ME...because GH tells me that 1) black characters are interchangeable and they're pretty blatant about it. Taggart leaves...here comes Justus...Justus leaves...Stan gets a bigger part...Stan leaves, here comes Cassius--never are they onscreen at the same time...any show that tells me over and over again that people who have the same tan as I do are not valued is an insult to ME and only ME.

She discussed her past with him a lot cause he assumed she was some random rich lady. But ther

It's an example of the way they USED to write for them.

The Barber-Winters were always very cognizant of their ethnicity.

It was when CKLily was cast that they started assimilating to the detriment of the family unit.

Guza treats his black male characters horribly. He casts them as tokens or kills them off.

Justus death was so unnecessary but then any Quartermaine death is unnecessary.

If we want racial diversity we have to demand it. We have to be organized and we have to have someone willing to put in the time for it. Just talking about it here does nothing.

I absolutely agree. I'm tired of talking and I want action. If people are indeed serious about this then I am all for a well organized campaign calling for diversity. It entails a lot of work but I am sick to death with TPTB and their racist attitudes.

A grassroots campaign can work. The "Yes, I can" video created by Will.i.am did wonders for Barack Obama. The campaign has to be on a large scale and the co-operation of all soap fans from all three networks are needed to attract the attention of ABC, CBS, and NBC. I hope people who are genuinely interested in seeing real diversity will will come together to achieve real change. This really isn't the forum to be proactive, however, I think it is the responsibility of fans to make the networks realize that their racist practices are completely unacceptable.

I also like the actress that plays Nadine.

It just seems so stupid to have so many talented actresses on the show only to waste them but then it is GH. lol

Lainey & Nik would make a pretty couple & her being a doctor she could've helped him through his anger issues.

I could also see Lainey & Patrick too.

They have nice chemistry & there would be good dramatic potential from her friendship with Robin.

My first choice for Nicholas is Gia. They can re-introduce the Campbells and have Tagert follow but I doubt Real Andrews will come back given the way he was treated. Both Gia and Targert were such popular characters and they were totally discarded. Recast-Gia lasted all of two seconds.

Anyway, I really like the idea of Nik and Lainey. He and Nadine have zero chemistry and I have no idea what happened to Lainey and Cody. It's disgrace the way she's just languishing on the backburner because she's black when she pretty much has chemistry with everyone.

There's so much that could be done with Epiphany that I cringe every time she yells, screams and smothers everyone in her token role.

My problem with Sonny is that everyone refers to him as Caucasian, including himself. The only time we're reminded he's Hispanic is when the plot calls for it. It's a pattern GH has perpetuated for years and it's ridiculous.

Ric is half Hispanic since they share the same mother and that part of his ethnicity is never even mentioned. Sigh...

Sorry, the lack of diversity on soaps doesn't bother me in the least.
