Let me just say I was totally wrong about saying palin was the better vp choice than biden, I think I said this like 2 or 3 weeks ago. After seeing Pallin's interviews with Couric, Gibson, and meeting with press by herself this woman just really needs to be quiet. Almost everything that comes out of her mouth seems dumb somehow. JM really needs to coach her about meeting with press and doing interviews, oh wait he's not much better. Those two are two peas in a pod and they really do complement each other. I'm sorry but people that are really considering voting for McCain really need to ask themselves are you really okay with pallin being president if god forbid something happened to McCain? McCain is 72, hot tempered, and has a history of cancer, so his health is an issue.

I haven't fully watched the debate, but the snippets that I have seen makes obama look like the winner.

Can someone briefly explain to me how this $700 billion bail out is going to help? From an knowledgeable person (me), it seems like, "Hey, no matter how bad things get, we will always come to the rescue." How is this going to teach others to not do the same thing if they're going to be bailed out anyway?

I'm okay with the bailout if none of the CEO's of these companies get any money and people that have had to leave their homes because of not being able to pay the mortgage get to move back into their homes. I think its interesting that they want a bailout but when it came to people losing their homes they weren't given the time of day. Not saying that the homeowners didn't have any of the blame, but its really hypocritical for them to think we the U.S. tax payers many of whom have lost their homes would want to bail them out when they don't even have a home to go to.

EK I agree, this woman is just plain scary and should be the last person that should put in a position of power.

I recall her saying that she would be prepared to go to war with Russia over the Georgia stuff. And if this happened IMHO I think that what Russia could do can make 9/11 look like a sunday school picnic.

But then I do believe that McCain only chose her cuz Obama was the democrate choice and Hilary was not his running mate and he wants the female vote. And had Hilary won the Democrat vote then I think that McCain more than likely would have chosen an African American as her funning mate

Yup, same here. I can't believe this woman could become the POTUS. But then again, the US did have Bush for 8 years!

I know you guys are discussing which news program is the least biased when covering the election stuff. I'll tell you all: I watch KERA, public television.

They covered both conventions, and you got to hear every speaker without the commentators cutting up the program. I watched the debate on that station as well and it was great. After it's over, they do have their analysts ( or whatever) weigh in on the whole thing, but there is no clear right-winger or liberal-- they just give it to you straight. If there were no KERA, I'd just find clips of the stuff online. I just need the facts (I don't need opinion masquerading as fact).

I can't take the MSM-- they make me sick to my stomach.

I watched PBS during the conventions too. I agree, it was very good and right up the middle. I watched the debates on CNN because they had the audience monitor.

Tina Fey does it again. The hand movements....how Tina answered the questions......it's identical to the real interview!

Tina Fey was great. The debate skit was very funny too. At the end, they showed "Hillary" and said they had invited her in case McCain didn't show.

I seriously doubt that as it would have probably led to collapse of the Republican's unified front.

He would have picked someone the base loved and they all would have gone on an all out attack of the Clintons.

GREETINGS FELLOW DEBATERS!

We're still having a wonderful time here on the beautiful Central Coast of California, but I did want to take a few minutes to check in and say hello to you all. Please note that, although I did not watch the debate, I caught glimpses of it from a restaurant here.

I somehow managed yesterday to snap a photo of the debate on TV -- great two-shot of John and Barrack... a particularly heated exchange. I'm sure you all will remember this moment:

DEBATE2008.jpg

John McCain and Barrack Obama square off in a heated exchange.

I should add that the third party back there is Bob Barr. He's dejected because they wouldn't let him debate.

Just one of the more interesting debate moments I've seen this weekend! Seriously, that was taken about 4 miles north of San Simeon on Highway 101 on the Central Coast. Talk about awesome to see these guys up close and personal!! Hearst Castle was way cool, too... The tour guide noted that Hearst, despite his wealth, was ANYTHING but CONSERVATIVE!! Happy debating to you all... will talk to you soon!

Earmarks aside, McCain would have said yes to bill

By DAVID ESPO – 1 hour ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Sunday he probably would have voted for legislation to keep the federal government running after midweek, even though it was packed with the kind of "outrageous pork-barrel spending" he has long opposed.

"That's the way they always do," the Arizona senator said dismissively of fellow lawmakers. "You put in the, you put in the good deals, and then you put in the pork, as well." He said separate votes should be allowed on the bill's different provisions.

McCain did not vote on the measure when it cleared Congress on Saturday, although he returned to Washington after Friday night's campaign debate in Mississippi. McCain said he was working on other matters at the time of the vote, including negotiations on a bailout of the financial industry.

"I certainly would have done everything in my power to remove those earmarks," he told ABC's "This Week" in an interview. "But I may have voted for it if, I probably would have ended up voting for it, but I decry a system where individual members are, are faced with taking all this unacceptable, outrageous stuff that has contributed to the largest growth in spending since the Great Society."

By one estimate, the bill includes 2,322 pet projects sought by lawmakers for their home districts and states, totaling $6.6 billion.

The measure is needed to keep the government running after the new budget year begins Wednesday. The same bill also lifted a long-term ban on offshore oil drilling and included billions of dollars to subsidize loans to the battered auto industry.

McCain reversed course earlier this year to announce support for additional drilling to help reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. The auto industry loans, designed to help car makers retool their factories to produce more efficient models, are particularly important in swing states such as Michigan and Ohio.

McCain said he intends to resume campaigning full-time on Monday, after a week in which he announced he was suspending all such activity to return to Washington and become involved in negotiations on the financial industry bailout.

Polls suggest the race now slightly tilts Obama's way, with the fading of the gains McCain made with his Republican National Convention this month and the emergence of the economic crisis as the dominant issue.

But more than five weeks remain in a campaign that already has undergone innumerable swings in momentum. The calendar includes three more nationally televised debates, including one scheduled for Thursday between vice presidential running mates Sarah Palin, the Republican governor of Alaska, and Joe Biden, a Democratic senator from Delaware.

McCain said he hopes to be able to support a newly negotiated $700 billion deal to help the financial industry, but said he wants to see the details first. "This is something that all of us will swallow hard and go forward with," he said.

His decision to return to Washington to insert himself in the negotiations between the Bush administration and Congress drew strong criticism from Democrats, who said his presence hurt rather than helped. He defended his decision strongly.

"I'm a Teddy Roosevelt Republican. I've got to get in the arena when America needs it," McCain said. "And if that judgment wants to be made that I, whether I helped or hurt, I'll be glad to accept the judgment of history."

On other issues, McCain:

_Appeared to concede that his health care plan would result in higher taxes for some. McCain favors a $5,000 annual tax credit to help individuals and families afford health insurance, but that could leader employers to drop their current plans, including some that could not be replaced for $5,000.

"It depends on, on, on what plan they have," McCain said. "But that's usually the wealthiest people. Ordinary working Americans have the kind of, or an overwhelming majority have the health insurance plans that this tax credit, refundable tax credit, will actually put more money in their pockets for the purchase of health care than what they had before."

_Defended Palin from increasing criticism, including from some conservatives, that she is ill-prepared to become first in line of succession to the presidency.

"They can complain all they want to," he said. "...I'm so happy that she is part of the team. And she's brought a kind of exuberance and a kind of excitement that makes you really think that political campaigns again can still be something that is an exciting trip."
