Days: TV Guide Article about John's Death/Drake's firing

The Big Black-Out

Was it worth killing John Black? Days of Our Lives fans have said goodbye to the intensely popular hero--played by 22 year vet Drake Hogestyn--and many are now claiming they'll quit watching the show in protest.

This may not be an idle threat: when Hogestyn and equally beloved screenpartner Deidre Hall were written off Days for a long stretch last spring, the ratings took a nosedive and many of those viewers didn't return.

In September, Days hit the bottom of the household Nielsens, it's lowest ratings ever. Considering that, the firing of Hogestyn could be a moronic--if not downright suicidal--move. Adding to the weirdness, NBC has dumped it's daytime programming VP Annamarie Kostura and shut down her entire department. Who knows what any of this means?

Also, I don't get the business logic in canceling two higher rated soaps, to make room for the lowest rated soap on television. Also, when soaps switch networks, they have a history of losing over half their audience.

ATWT and GL have been on CBS for over 50 years, they sure as hell deserve better than to be canceled for a reject soap from another network. Same reasoning applies to AMC and OLTL on ABC.

Come on offing two soaps for one? That's just laughable to me and would kill the genre even faster.

I gotta co-sign your post again Y&RWorldTurner B):)

I remember a few years back when it was rumored ABC wanted Days and that they'd either cancel OLTL or make it a half hour, OMG that pissed off ABC fans in general, not just OLTL fans.

That right there is reason enough for it to not happen. That and backlash from viewers of the other shows.
