AMC/OLTL: HW Rumor

OLTL is officially the worst it's ever been IMHO. I've never seen it this close to cancellation and dropping more veterans will only hurt it worse. I can't even watch it the way it is now, it's too painful. I love the show and have watched through everything but no one can dare tell me I am disloyal if I can't bear to look at it right now.

Cutting the right overpriced people would help but they'd never do that. Adding a few classic characters to usher in younger ones would help but they don't do that. GH has done some of that but not enough.

That is the way I feel Vee. I tried to watch today, but I stopped. I can't speak of how the show was during the Eterna thing, but it is worse now than I can remember in recent memory. It is not watchable for me. My disgust is for many of the same reasons as those expressed by Scotty. I admire people's loyalty. I don't have it and for me personally, OLTL doesn't deserve it. The network totally turned their nose up at fans who have expressed displeasure in the direction of the show, and in the knocking off of so many well-liked characters.

Today there is Viki standing there just to be seen. And there is Vincent acting and in much of the show. I thought hmmm, they have them reversed. Viki is the far superior actor and Vincent would be fine just standing there to be seen.

Frons' comments that it was necesssary to "train viewers" tells me a great deal about his attitude about fans. On an unrelated note, I've always though Young and Restless was a good show. I don't know much about the writer in question, but the show has been consistently good and seems to have avoided many of the knee jerk reactions of other daytime soaps. JMO.

I watched in very bad times for a very long time. I'd be happy to continue doing so if they gave me something, anything to work with, a single bone to throw to me. I'd hang in for those six months. But there's nothing. It would be like setting myself up to get hit again right now if I watched for the hope of another six months while onscreen, right now, John McBain is getting a king's funeral (AND HE'S NOT REALLY DEAD!) and Dan Gauthier and Heather Tom are both on the way out.

Minority opinion, but I loved ETERNA. Camp and sci fi galore but it was about Viki, Clint, Megan, Roger, Tina, Cord all characters I loved. That's the difference. I can get through bad stories when I care about the characters. I don't care about these characters. I also agree that if they were giving me something, anything along with real hope there'd be no doubt that I'd continue to hang in for the up turn. They aren't and they squandered their credibility.

Eterna would be a lot more preferable to what we have now. At least then people were having fun with it.

I would love a cheesy '80s throwback location shoot right about now. With anyone but John McBain because he doesn't have the clothes for it.

Both McTavish and Higley are staying? Yet ABC is trying to fix things?

Sounds a lot like the Republican party right now, doesn't it? LOL

Thanks for the updates, Errol. Not what I wanted to hear; but it's still better than "McTavish and Frons stay and it is business as per usual."

This is getting so frustrating! I GRRRRR'd aloud when reading your posts.

But, anyway... (that was too damn funny!) I think Frons needs to go. Bottom line. That would cure a multitude of sins right off the bat. THEN, Megan needed to be shown the door back in 2005 when her stories started getting haywire (Fight Club, Di/Dixie, Ryan's "Death" and Resurrection, Jonathan's "Cut the Bad Out" and not being forced to pay for ANY of the THREE lives he brutally took, etc.). Because the last 10 months of this year alone have been painfully campy -- which is NOT what AMC is about. Megan McTavish can really go up against JER's version of DAYS and I swear you wouldn't notice the difference (except that AMC wouldn't have characters talking to themselves at the end of every scene). I keep hearing that rumor that Megan's been pilfering a lot of stuff for AMC from the bibe she wrote for a soap she created called Purgatory. And from the looks of it, all the misery and angst, I can see how one could make that assumption.

Truly, I can.

All these characters are being twisted and shaped and formed into pods, supporting situations that they just wouldn't support. Erica feels no loyalty at ALL to Edmund? She was married to his brother twice, stole his child and he was very warm and welcoming to Bianca, letting her ride the horses at the Wildwind stables years after Erica and Dimitri divorced -- but Erica is just like, "Jonathan murdered him in cold blood while paralyzed and defenseless in a wheelchair. Oh well!"

Kendall can't allow herself to love Zach, because how can she love a man that let another man who violated women be tortured? Are you serious? Ryan almost punched Greenlee in a face, drove off a damn cliff, and brought back the brother that terrorized her and her two step-sisters as well as murdered three people... and we're supposed to believe she loves and trusts him more than Zach? Also, will they address this deep resounding horror Kendall has concerning Zach when she finds out TAD was the one who actually did the deed? I mean, after all, she bought Tad's word over Zach's.

Babe is another story altogether. I've gone on and on about her sociopath ass, so I won't do it here.

But to sum up, Megan's stories are lacking in emotional investment and are completely plot driven.

WORD! to your whole post ;)

WTF? Giving McT a co-headwriter? Are they insane or are they trying to kill AMC?

If they looked at McT's track record on all 3 ABC soaps and Guiding Light, they would see that she's long been a hack who destroys a show and drives viewers away in droves. Why would they even consider keepng her?

Totally agree with your assessment. Except I think it would be much better to ditch Bobbie Eakes instead of Julia Barr. Brooke is far more important to AMC's history. Julia Barr is adored. And Brooke can easily be dropped into Krystal's role since the story was written for Brooke in the first place!

Would anyone really care of Bobbie got the boot?

Of course it will be Julia Barr though.

I wish they would get rid of Bobbie Eakes and Alexa Havins. Imo, both Krystal and Babe wore out their welcomes long ago.

Of course, they'll get rid of the signature characters that put the show on the map instead. I still can't believe they took Opal off contract and it seems inevitable that Brooke is next.

Thanks for the update, Errol!

Damn, November is a long way off. I hope the news comes out sooner than that. I might not be taping AMC daily again until January if McT's work is going to keep airing.

This may be a naive to ask, but does it matter so much which show Armus is writing when he signs his contract? Is it with ABC daytime in general or does he have to sign a different one for each soap? Why can't ABC buy his current AMC bible even if they move him to OLTL and bring in Alden for AMC later?

I don't think buying the bible would be too much use--I can't see it being all too fleshed out in 2 months and from reading Harding Lemay's book about writing Another World and another 80s take on soap writing, if a new team fo writers gets an old bible it's not too liekly it will be stuck to for its year. That said writing a soap bible is a lot of work--I'd assume if indeed he did write one he's getting SOME money for it.

I've only really been a casual watcher of Y&R but why si everyone so down on Kay Alden again? She was co-headwriter at Y&R since the late 70s (check out some of the WOST.org credits) and from what I've read is partially responsible for much of th egreatness attributed to that soap. It does sound liek her solo stints haven't been as successful, btu I'd agree with whoever said that, compared to nearly any other HW currently doing the soap shuffle, she certainly seems to have a relatively small bad to good ratio.

e

That frightens me too!!! I don't know what to think anymore. I actually was starting to get excited about the possibility of BA writing for AMC but now it sounds like he could go to OLTL. Alden sounds like a version of McTavish and that scares me.

Didn't GH used to be the #2 ranked soap? And AMC was right behind them. It is unbelievable that they have fallen that far. I think that the minute both soaps started to fall, changes should have been made. HW's, EP, etc. should have been fired and replaced at that time. And GH used to be the pride and joy of ABC daytime and look where they are at now. Maybe Guza should be the first to go.

It's not so simple though... I think AMC was the number two soap more recently than GH--it was always behind Y&R when Is tarted watching in the early 90s. Then you had thier sligth bute sure drop and DAYS massive climb--which ABC did try to get AMC to emulate a bit (ie getting Lorraine Broderick to write that ridiculous voodoo story fro Noah and Julia around 97)

From what little I know, I would much rather OLTL get Kay Alden. Y & R has always been a very well written show. Even in its down periods it was much better than most of what we see on daytime. Y&R does a good job with multi-generational stories and all the characters have a great deal of depth.

I don't know anything about the other gentleman except that he is a cop show writer. That worries me particularly after reading MIchael Easton's comments to Carolyn Hinsley. I can see OLTL becoming Fron's "new vision" for daytime and having a bunch of short story arcs focusing on Michael Easton at the PD. It would be PC without the fangs.

I think why people see Kay for AMC is that in many ways AMC is ABC's most "Y&R-like" of their three soaps... That seems to be the only real reeasoning it seems a possibility (plus she was courted for the show before...)

Isn't McT too pricey to keep as a co-HW?

I know I'm in th eminority, and I admit AMC has been pretty awful since August (and arguably not much better before then) but Oltl is the one that I think is in the worse position right now--very little on it lately makes any sense to me.

R Sinclair what's this about a soap bible called Purgatory Mct wrote? Was it for ABC? I've never heard it mentioned before though I admit to not being surprised if she was using elements of it

I think OLTL is much worse too. It doesn't make sense at all.
