Guiding Light Discussion Thread
Bev talked about basically 2 things: working hours & story. She felt overworked & she didn't like the part of her story where she was giving Nick & Mindy a hard time. Bev thought that Alex would not have cared about the things her story was making it seem she cared about. She thought the Alex would have been accepting of Nick with Mindy, romantically. In fact I don't think she wanted Alex to have ANY opinion about Nick's love life. And, she wanted to work less, or fewer, hours per day, with the understanding that she always worked at least 4 days each week. I think giving her a break on either one would have helped immeasurably. Instead going by what she herself said, Jill ignored her concerns. We have no reason to doubt her account & also it sounds just like Jill.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
About this, there are a couple of possibilities. Frequently a new EP is given a mandate to cut the size of a cast, or to make the cast younger, or to dump a bunch of vets to save money since the vets usually have higher salaries. Now, fans hate it when a new EP comes in & starts firing people. One thing they've learned to do is to kind of cherry pick. So, instead of doing away with a whole family or community group, they'll take one each from ALL. But, that has the unintended effect of making people into pods or where once someone had friends, now, that has eroded & they're alone. Another thing, Lynn Liccardo in her book "as the world stopped turning" states that CBS mandated a narrative change for ATWT. What she describes is going from the old traditional threads that when finished make a pattern & instead new stories are told about pods. Both are examples of where isolation of characters was an unintended side effect of something else entirely.

ALL: Speculation on the Future of Successful Daytime Soap Operas
No, never happened. You're not perhaps thinking of "A Daytime to Remember"? when ABC filled the time before a new half hour show at midday failed with reruns of classic ABC soaps? Chris Goutman & Barbara Bloom talked about their idea that soap fans did not have enough interest in soaps anymore to do 5 hours per week, suggesting, 4 per week instead. I'm not convinced they had any intel to show that this was #1 needed or #2 would be effective. I do know that later Bloom claimed to have run the numbers every possible way & always came up with ratings dropping, inevitably. Of course, generally speaking that is what happened, across the board, not just daytime. It has nothing really per se to do with soaps. It has to do with the Nielsens themselves & people's changing viewing habits. If you look at the numbers in the 60s & 70s, it is obvious that the broadcast networks have been facing a foregone conclusion. One thing that is interesting to me is that many people took a very pessimistic view when we reached the point of having only 4 soaps on the air. There were many dire predictions that we would be totally soapless in x number of years, etc. And, that did not happen. That to me is a point of realistic optimism, although I don't think anyone understand why. However, Bielby & Bielby's classic "All hits are flukes." probably still is as true now as then since what will or won't succeed is hardly scientifically known.

Agree to disagree. Okay, I will give you Cam. It's true, probably not a selfish bone in his body, but also he no longer resides in Port Charles, so sorry but you can't count him, unless & until you can get Frank to bring him back. The rest at times, with certain people or circumstances, all of them. But, especially Kai.

Really impressive posting a summary of so many storyline aspects, characters, events, DeeVee really outdid herself, or any of us really, when she set about to tell a whole helluva lot of GL history. I'd like to nominate this really remarkable post for the post of the month for GL! Is there a second?

If you ask me, soap fans talk about soaps, period. Always have, always will. I mean, if a diminishment of overall quality meant that soap fans just stopped talking about soaps, then, I ask you, what in the hell are we doing here & now? I'll wait, This answer would seem to be crucial.

Nurse Willow = Gaslighting Gal, I mean who ever dreamed that she had that in her?!!! Madame Chairwoman, I rise on a point of clarity: Joss is only selfish if it's someone or something she doesn't care about. We might call that selectively selfish. Apparently it's going around in the younger generation of Port Charles. Just our luck!

Ada was so wise! Me either! What in the world is wrong with our brains?! Slight disagree. Yes, she was shallow but I really think she was fond of Perry, everyone was!! Quinn, etc. YES!!!

GH: July 2025 Discussion Thread
To be fair, okay, I cannot believe I just wrote that, to you!!! Well, pushing on for the benefit of people who do not have a deep abiding hatred of Joss, as I was trying to say. No one knew she'd been pricked by the Hook, no one had any idea she was not okay & she clearly sent Joss & Sexy Dexy away. And, then, she also vacated said premises, and it was only later, inside, when Liesl noticed her dress was torn & she was bleeding. I watched this scene last week. Edit to Add: One of Joss's best lines: "You two getting married is, like, the answer to everything. I mean you guys trust each other. You can handle any problem that comes up. And, bonus, you guys actually love each other." - Joss about Jarly, 8-12-21

BTW, Google can be magnificently wrong. I'm not saying they are here. It's just that it adds up. Sources you cannot be sure of: wikipedia, imdb, Google, Soap Opera Central. I'm sure there are more, this is not intended as an exhaustive list.

Of course I did & in fact I said so. It is true that I did not know any details of other visits, although I did know that the remote was a bid deal & also totally new. Maybe now this will all be more clear to you. At any rate, there is no problem here.

Unless there is some drastic change, I bet they will. We were online talking about soaps as early as 1985. If my math is correct, that's 40 years.

And, the thing is, besides being a descendant, OG Doug was a con man & a grifter, so Doug³ as a thief for sure, maybe grifter, too, not sure, but, ... there's just such obvious, character-usable symmetry, isn't there? It's hard not to feel opportunity was wasted.

Now, St. Croix, I have very vivid memories of the big drama there but not other visits. My memory says that the sky was so blue it was almost surreal, and same with the blue water. Then, all the rest of my mental capacity is full to the brim with worry over Mac as I honestly thought maybe he was going to die & he looked like death warmed over!! Plus, he was so very weak. Janice & Rachel & their fight, into the water, Janice produces a knife, they struggle for control of the knife & Janice ends up getting fatally stuck! Whew. Then, Mitch who we have only known as this evil guy helping Janice poison Mac does a one-eighty "about face" turn & begins to help Rachel get Mac to a hospital, which absolutely saves his life. Mitch confused me for years!!!
