ALL: Proposed Soaps Over The Years
But, Bill Bell created Y&R (with Lee as co-) and then HW it, too. He jumped through a fair amount of hoops to get to HW it, since he was under contract with Corday/Tri-Star as HW of DOOL. Gave 1% of Y&R to Corday & HW both shows for 2 yrs before he was free to *just* HW his own baby. It's still amazing to me that he HW two competing shows for 2 yrs! Whoa, who could do that? Well, he could. I am sure it helped that he had Pat Falken Smith on his team at DOOL. Yes, it could have played out that way, sure.

I can't help but wonder why Ann Marcus would be creating it but not then being its HW.

Well, I can't stand Clyde & so am loathe to defend him, but he is at least working as a cook. RoChris has got to be paying him. Underlining mine. I am okay with all the rest of the indictment!

I really hope this is not repeating. Peter Straub who actually liked soaps died on the 4th. Award-winning author Peter Straub was a longtime fan of AMC & OLTL. - AFTERNOON DELIGHT “Soap operas are a surefire, faithful source of sheer innocent narrative pleasure.” - Peter Straub as quoted in AFTERNOON DELIGHT

I love Kermit here getting some O2!! But, I wanted to say that it was just too contrived for Sonny to be alone. No way would Will have left his side! GregR was in the twitterverse last night claiming that he was channeling Cybil Shepherd, who I have no memory of as a nurse! I suspect it was more a Nurse Ratchet.

You could be right. She'd made changes & she might've settled for as much as she'd done. Part of it at the time could've been people just being afraid of how far the "new" would go. But, yes, backburnered as you say, at a minimum. And, there's no way of knowing what kind of marching orders she was under! They bring their choice in & then they present them with their mandates. At any rate I got a real kick out of this SFT "team member" marshaling a spirited defense of her when I had personally always been pretty dadgummed impressed with her. We ended up laughing. And she & Pete didn't get much time to work together because the Writer's Strike "struck"!

I found out something interesting about Mary-Ellis Bunim when she was at SFT. Well, more than one interesting thing, actually. Apparently a lot was said about her & she was trying to make changes & they weren't popular & so a lot of stuff was said about her. And she refused to take up for herself. She just wouldn't address it & let it pass on by. Of course one of the things she wanted to do was to get rid of Joanne & Stu. And she didn't like Pete, thought Pete was an ineffective writer. And specifically told him to make the show sexier.

Article: Soap Opera Actors & Actresses Who Simply Cannot Be Recast
Okay. Well, I'm for being fair. I didn't know that about those "other Julies"! 🤣 Good to know. In the vintage shows I've seen again this year, August '66 I think, which are the first I ever saw of the show, when Julie was telling David to go & be a husband & a father for a yr or two & then divorce Susan & Susan was being really b*tchy, when little Dickie was still the size of a dill pickle inside her, *that* Julie was very good ... and the writing, oh, so good. I Support ⏳to 🦚!

I've watched this 4 times so far. I expect to watch it more. Totally blows me away! A Celebration of Robyn Griggs Wiley's Life will be held Saturday, Sept. 10th. I will be getting information about it being live-streamed & will post that.

Article: Soap Opera Actors & Actresses Who Simply Cannot Be Recast
Well, soaps do have an absolute reputation for being able to do successful recasts. And it comes of necessity since they go on & on & on, having beginnings & having middles but for most of the time not having endings. So we have 15 Tom Hugheses, 3 adult Amanda Corys, and it is only in soaps where you have the first successful Julie Olsen be #4. I think soap Casting Directors are renowned because it's so important, happens so often & the audience has such high expectations. Soap fan reactions to recasts come in 2 speeds - racing stripe ready to go or don't even get out of the gate. And, there's lot of little twists & turns to it, too. Apparently Anne Heche almost came back & played Vicky & Marley again & only scheduling conflicts kept it from happening. And Ellen Wheeler did come back & play Marley again. When someone got it in their head to fire Charles Keating in '98, Victoria tried to quit. NBC said fine that Robin Strasser was free & they were sure they could being her back. (So they say, anyway.)

Mimi's perspective at Weekly & Michael Kape & Don West & Joanna ... something at their little one, what was it, Soap Opera Now? The only real critiques, the only actual analysis about ratings, them wuz the days. I remember that Corday was on a quest. If he'd ever marshaled that much energy focused on the quality legacy he inherited, DOOL today would be a different show.

Article: Soap Opera Actors & Actresses Who Simply Cannot Be Recast
We just did a whole set of questions about what role could not be recast, best recast, worst recast, what role did the show have to have, and what character ate their show, ... elsewhere. Could not be recast was the least popular question with only 3 people answering it. One said only one - Stefano. One said the whole core of Y&R - Victor, Nikki, Jack, Traci, Sharon & Nick! One mixed it up more - Luke, Carl Hutchins, Rachel, Felicia, Marlena & Patch. The answers the most people were insistent about were on SB. Apparently only Robin Wright can be Kelly & Lane Davies has to be Mason. No negotiations!

Sometimes I feel like Salem's abodes should be entered via turnstile. The glasses & on & off & playing with them, it was old & tired the first week. Now he's got me grimacing & thinking when I played the shrink in a community theatre offering of "Nightwatch" that I looked ridiculous playing with eyeglasses & no one told me!

Actors who have never been nominated for an Emmy
There is among fan lore the concept of the DOOL Curse, or put another way a long-running bias against the show when it comes to Emmys. Only thing is I think that it's absolutely true, that there is a bias in place against the show when it comes to Emmys. I'm sure there have been times when people did not think Emmy & DAYs with an = sign between the two words because they were doing stories that didn't have the gravitas that seemed to go with the statue & I've always thought it was a crying shame because the show has never lacked for sheer acting talent & their players are just as hard-working as anyone else's. Of course, this most recent win in Writing may signal a change in both Emmy & WGA mindset. One of the reels submitted was that start day with Doug in Marlena's office being evaluated for possible Alezheimers when the Devil appeared, and yes, it is about demonic possession but it's also a great piece of soap writing!
