  1. I've been looking for this. Finally found it! "The great lion of daytime television, Bill Bell." - Bill & Susan, the Hayeses
  2. I just got confused. I thought you must be talking about Bradley Bell, but, you mean Bill Bell? I have never heard that about him. Of course that is a criticism non-soap fans make about the whole genre & I do not find it to be accurate in general. The tortured hero, the scheming villainess, etc. One of the biggest changes in soaps was to the view of what is feminine & what the average woman does & is like. More women with jobs, or even careers (HER STORIES 128-129). Specifically in the '60s & mid-60s Bell & Irna considered attitudes toward working women. They imagined Mary Matthews reading THE FEMININE MYSTIQUE, etc.
  3. If you are aware of errors, you should list them. Sharing this information is important. I don't understand. Rachel was the lead matriarch, no question.
  4. Which also leads to Nik & Nic & Nick. I was looking at my notes from Patrick Mulcahey & just like Adam Huss is married to Adam Huss, Patrick Mulcahey is married to Patrick Mulcahey. @janea4old Great explanation!
  5. Christopher Schemering's Soap Opera Encyclopedia is not a memoir, not an autobiography, not a collection of essays & not given to opinion & is held up by many as an example of what good soap opera scholarship can & should be.
  6. All I have ever seen is Stefan except for one person right here.
  7. I was just about to post with concern about where in the world was Neil Johnson, ... when I figured it out.
  8. The first soap ever on CBS TV was The First 100 Years. It ran for 2½ years, beginning on 12-4-1950 and running until 6-27-1952. Its basis was a radio show from summer 1948. The name comes from an old saying we are no longer familiar with, "the first 100 years of a marriage are the hardest." In the story a couple gets married & moves into a Victorian monstrosity. Their 15 minutes of B&W TV per weekday dealt with troubles with their house & their in-laws & other ills of domesticity. They had a permanent house set in Liederkranz Hall. They had the dubious distinction of being the first soap to use this new-fangled thing called a teleprompter. It wasn't doing too badly, in the top 10 of current TV soaps, but P&G thought they could do better. So, they canceled it & put on in its place a new show called The Guiding Light. For once P&G was very right! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z5a6SMboC4
  9. Did anyone get an opportunity to see who wrote today's script? The credits failed me after being successful for several days. I may have unfairly maligned the bird. Is today the first of the scab writers? @JAS0N47 Can you confirm that today is the first day of strike-written show? Thanks! I really like both Holly & Tate. I was surprised Chanel confronted Holly until I saw that they used it to create a pretend Holly/Tate couple. Since that can be a step to a real couple that is to the good. I thought it was funny that Tate is perturbed that Brady is taking all his earnings to pay back his debt to his ex-prep school. No teen would take being penniless well! I very much like how Holly is aligned with her mom. I liked today even though so much time was wasted on Leo, Dimitri & Jackie. But, Johnny/Chanel & Holly/Tate was fun. And, the big deal of the day was again Ari's performances. A Monday cliffhanger! Eric's got the DNA results in his hand. How will they prolong this? I also see real potential in the Holly actress. I feel against a recast Gabi. They had the perfectly good OG Gabi & wasted her. They don't deserve a new one. And they've not shown an ability to write more than crap for her!
  10. I didn't even think about the historical dramas. I loved Centennial & also Captains & Kings. I was a sucker for the whole John Jakes series.
  11. Today is the anniversary of Falcon Crest, 9 seasons on CBS, from 12-4-81 to 5-17-90. The California wine industry set in the fictional Tuscany Valley but modeled after the real life Napa Valley. Earl Hamner, Jr. meant for it to be the opposite of what he is so famous for, The Waltons. Jane Wyman, Robert Foxworth, Abby Dalton, Lorenzo Lamas, Susan Sullivan, etc.
  12. Typically I am not good at predicting but this year I have some strong opinions. I think Y&R will win for anything & everything that they put up Chelsea's suicide for. So, definitely Melissa Claire Eagan for Best Actress. I am guessing that they put it up for Show, Writing & Directing. Jason Thompson submitted Billy's support of Chelsea. I think Younger will go to DAYS Cary Christopher where one of his scenes was him expressing that he just wants his mom back. For Best Supporting Actress Stacy Haiduk submitted - for the first time ever - both Kristen scenes & Susan Banks scenes. Susan whle being kidnapped were pretty remarkable. However, Sonya Eddy might get it.
  13. I know what y'all mean. There are retcons and then there are retcons. Some are awful & some are okay. Whenever we talk about the Frame farm mysteriously - and absurdly - being relocated from OK to outside Bay City it makes me think about Michael Malone, I think it was, who had Jake & Vicky get that swing set from Lassiter, PA & bring it to a nearby neighborhood in Bay City, like that would really be something that would be done! I realize a farm is much bigger than a swing set but they both annoy me to no end!! (Might not have been Malone but it was around that time frame.)
  14. Recently in another thread it was discussed. I think I was the one person who liked it. I love the form. So I have a long list. i don't consider any of them trashy. And I never felt watching them was a "guilty pleasure." Shogun, The Thorn Birds, Lace, Bare Essence, North & South, The Stand, It, The Shining, Rose Red, Holocaust, V, My Name Is Steven, Battlestar Galactica, Angels in America, Dune, Children of Dune, Tin Man, Neverland, The Andromeda Strain, Brideshead Revisited, Prime Suspect, Tales of the City, Tipping the Velvet, Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect,
  15. Thanks. I missed that. But I could eliminate all of the other EPs.
  16. Okay, that makes sense. I know I recall that it is very expensive. I was thinking that meant the insurance coverage for it was not good & not existing, well, that is definitely not good!!!! I imagine they have been living modestly & saving, too. This will go through their savings & they'll probably have to go into debt as well. This should be part of their tale!
  17. Well, we know that the 1988 WGA strike happened which prevented Pete from doing anything. But, it is widely believed that Swajeski had all of Pete's notes & that she did a kind of cherry picking where she used some of what he had planned & did not use other parts. I have tried to get an interview with her but she seems completely uninterested in anything about soap opera writing. She is an active poster on IG but none of it is about soaps or about writing. It's a real shame because she could tell us so much!
  18. A fancy dress party at the Kiriakis mansion. Debra Adair is Kate Roberts, Victor's wife. Lucas wants to perform a search to find his father who is unknown to him. Bill Horton wants to tell Lucas he is his father. Laura Horton (JLB) is furious with Kate & with Bill. Somehow Kate is responsible for her losing 18 years of her life. Laura steps out of the crowd to say something ...
  19. Well, he's not trying to delude anyone. He clearly believes it to be true. He's just sloppy with his facts. There was no malice or anything.
  20. Real Roman, John, Marlena, Victor, Kate (Debra Adair), Lucas, Bill (Christopher Stone), Laura (Jamie Lyn Bauer), Vivian, Ivan, the whole town, ... Bill wants to tell Lucas he is his son. Lucas wants to search for his father. Laura is furious with Bill. The party is beginning. Vivian taunts Laura is she just going to let this happen? Laura says NO, she is not. End of show. Friday cliffhanger.
