    J. Eddie Peck was nearing 40 years old in this episode and looks absolutely flawless.

Phyllis used to be such a fun character.

Doris Collins! I have very distinct memories of my aunt referring to her as “Sharon’s mama in that wheelchea.” A character like Doris, folding her towels with her little tabletop oscillating fan whirring in the background, wouldn’t have been taken seriously on soaps just five years after this episode aired.

Yes, he does! And his chemistry with Tom was always as hot as he is.

This is such a great example of the fun Phyllis and you can still see that dark, scary undercurrent.

Always nice to see Doris. Such a unique presence.

Heather Tom was such a gifted and open young actress. You can just see so many emotions passing over her in one little scene. Katie gives her nothing to work with, and she’s hardened into a lot of bad patterns.

Heather as Victoria was an absolute treasure. One of THE biggest losses this show has ever endured. She should be the lead of Newman by now, her own version of Victor. Instead....

This episode is a reminder of the softer, sweeter Victor and the beautiful relationships he had with his kids.

The uploader is on a roll!!! Super rare to find: nearly 250 consecutive episodes from 1995-1996 I have not seen since they aired originally...

Check out the Playlists!!! There's LOADS of soapie goodness - in German though.

Turning on CC does a decent job of helping one follow it! I will never understand why they edited the credits to play at the start of the episode though. Why fiddle with it like that?

  3. Up to episode 18 of Season 13, where apparently Paige is now paralyzed. I had no idea that would happen! Not sure about seeing her like this, though. I guess it depends how they handle it.

The switch from Romano to Marcus episodes was so noticeable I didn't even have to look at the credits to confirm. Suddenly, there was much more energy and sense of direction.

I didn't hate the first 2/3 of Season 13 but it did become glacially paced and eventually you'd come out of an episode feeling like nothing had happened (even if it had), which clearly was very dangerous. I mean, Jason was "leaving for Sweden" for about 39 episodes.

I am intrigued by the very sexy Alex Barth but very confused as well, as they kept zigzagging with how they portray him and I couldn't tell if I was supposed to be turned on by his near-evil treatment of Claudia (but, hey, if anyone deserves it, it's her). I think eventually they settled for opportunist and it works. A real shame they wrote Jason off. Jason and Alex around would be great for the hunky young guy portion of the show.

Vanessa Hunt is intriguing too, if a tad annoying. I hope they go somewhere good with this.

I LOVE Val writing Greg's biography. Decent drama. Val has been quite well served this season, even if that Lynette story went absolutely nowhere.

Sad to see the ranch go but nice that Gary and Val are back on the cul-de-sac.

To my surprise, I quite like Pierce now that he's gone full psycho. That scene where Marcia Cross had him fck her in order to give him info on Greg was wonderfully twisted. Interested to see where this goes.

I sort of disagree. Some of the most critically acclaimed shows are slow and dramatic. Look at Game of Thrones, Better Call Saul, and Succession. I think most people yearn for good storytelling and acting. Hell, even the Dark Knight and Marvel universe was a slow burn. I think the studios underestimate their audiences.

No we don't disagree LOL That was the exact point I was going to make next on my post but left it out because of course there is a yearning for good storytelling and can be successful. It's why I wrote those fans would grow to love it/get used to it.

Sadly, that doesn't change the very real fact that there are people whose idea of a good soap is what's currently airing. Like, "I hate these reruns" kinda people.

You're correct about YR's approach to 'psycho' women back then (Veronica, Mari Jo), they didn't just snap randomly - there was a lot of build up. What I meant by quota is that every two years or so, another woman went over the edge for good and usually in a big way: Lisa (1989), Sheila (1993), Mari Jo (1996), Veronica (1998), Tricia (2001). I seem to recall Leanna was destined to have the same fate, but something switched radically. I'm definitely missing stuff and maybe others. But it was a clear pattern.

I guess I was remembering that I really liked Tricia, how she evolved and was more sad to see her go. I just reread her bio and it all came flooding back to me. She was involved in some really good stuff. I disliked the Victor/Tricia stuff ('ick'), but was surprised when she made the false allegations. To be fair, he was conning her.

I see what you mean! And you are right - it's what Aback called the 'winning Y&R formula': There's usually a psycho on the show... sometimes two at the same time! It's to the show's immense credit that it doesn't necessarily feel like it was done too much. I think it's something that fitted the show's dark, gothic elements well and also provided a lot of "action" in a decidedly slow-paced show.

Then there is the much younger generation (or those who joined the show in more recently) who only know the show as is now. Those who don’t get a (different kind of) kick out of the ‘retro’ element and how much younger the leading actors looked and sounded- and maybe even a few who do, may struggle with the slower/more considered pace and how dark it looks.

Of course it would be silly for me to speak in absolutes on this point, but it’ll be something to see how responses manifest.

Oh, undoubtedly there is a certain portion of today's audience that would not like it, find it boring, too slow, too "dramatic" (whatever the f*ck that means on a soap opera) etc. They might not even be able to stand the length of a two-minute scene.

That's not to say they couldn't grow to love it, but boy does it make my blood boil.

I miss how Y&R wrote psychos. Complex. You either got to see what made them tick or you got to slowly watch how they turned that way over time. You might not agree with how they got there, but you could understand how that happened. Organic. And Tricia was the latter. Didn't they break her down over a two year period before she snapped?

That's exactly it. It was far more than just a quota! And, yes, her descent into madness took well over a year and was exacerbated by her getting close with Matt Clarke.
