Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I thought that the best of Dr. Ed Bauer (by far) was Robert Gentry. I liked Mart Hulswit a lot, both on The Guiding Light and in his much shorter role as Ralph on All My Children. I never cared for Richard van Vleet in his soap opera roles (All My Children, Guiding Light), but I don't have that dislike when I see him in primetime shows or movies. I guess that this is because he resumed the roles from other actors who I liked better. I liked Peter Simon on other soap operas (The Edge of Night, Search for Tomorrow, As the World Turns), but I never saw him on Guiding Light. I know that Larry Bryggman was hired to play one of the brothers in the early 1960s. I don't remember which one (Mike or Ed) that he was to play, but I am thinking that it was Ed. He opted to enter military service instead.

Thomas G. Waites is who I was thinking about. Now, Slick, I have another short set of questions. These concern Jordan Charney on the show. I remember the episode in which he was a substitute (for Nicholas Benedict) as Phillip Brent. This was after he had been written off as Sam Lucas (the first time) on Another World and before he was cast as the second Vinnie Woleck on One Life to Live. My question is about his second role on the show - as Mr. Bodine, the father of Trask and Brian. He was a very negative character. He went to a prostitute, and then he discovered that his prostitute was his own daughter. What was the daughter's name? Who played her? Did Mr. Bodine have a first name?

Rhonda "Sheer" looked alright in the role of Ava. Her New Orleans accent, though, was not right. I will pass judgment on the acting. I will say that she reminded me a little of Susan Lucci as Erica on All My Children.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
I wonder about his detective novel. Was it ever published? Ted Tinling was a wonderful actor, and Vic Lamonte was a great character. He should never have been killed off the show, but that is something for which Henry Slesar was noted. He liked to break up some of the characters who were seemingly meant for each other. He broke up Laurie/Vic and Steve/Deborah on The Edge of Night and also Tony/Jill on Somerset.

The storyline that I am asking about aired around the same time that Cindy Chandler was dying or had just died. The actress who played the phychic was a contract actress, but the storyline was dropped hurriedly. Going back to the African-American character who was a friend of Jesse, the one who had the baby. It was later revealed who the father was. What was his name, and who played him? (I have gotten the names of Vera and Yvonne confused.)

Also (to Slick Jones or to anyone), I am nearly sure that, following the death of Kitty, Erica wanted to be the new Mrs. Lincoln Tyler. However, there was a wealthy widow that Lincoln was dating. She was played by Fern Fitzgerald. Do you know her name? (She may have only been seen once. Lincoln took her to dinner as his companion to the home of Phoebe and Charles.)

Slick, I am now thinking that I got mixed up on the Pillar character. The character that I meant to ask about was the character who was from South America and was involved with Mitch Beck. Two different actress played her. Can you post the name of the character and/or the two actresses who played her? I am pretty sure that Bertha was NOT the mother of Ray. I was right about Dr. Stone. Catherine Christensen did play her. Ms. Christensen later served a prison term in real life. I had been thinking that Donna Bullock had played a prostitute. It appeared for a while that Tom was going to be paired with her. I stand corrected. The prostitute's name may have been Candy. Do you know who played her? (This seems confusing to me because Candice Earley played former prostitute Donna #2.) Also, at some point on the show (1986?), Phoebe was involved with a lady who claimed to be able to communicate with the dead. However, this person was a fraud. Do you know that character's name and the name of the performer who played her. (It was a contract role, but, again, only lasted a few weeks.)

A Latina actress originally played Pilar. She was under contract, but was only on the show for about three weeks. Bertha could possibly have been married to Ray, but I don't think so. I remember Janice Rollins well. Catherine Christensen played a role, and it may have been Janice. However, I think that it was a later lady who was mixed up with Cliff. During the time that Nina was starting to be attracted to Steve Jacobi, Cliff was attracted to a female physician. What was her name, and who played her?

Slick, I have several questions about All My Children. I hope you can answer the following: 1. What was the name of the character that the late Mary McCarthy played? Her first name was Bertha, and Bertha was a girlfriend of Ray Gardner. I think that it was she who foiled his plans to take the young Tad from the Martin family. In real life, Ms. McCarthy departed the show to appear on the primetime Trapper John, M. D. 2. Who played Pillar originally, before Terri Eoff assumed the role? 3. Who played Bill Fisher, the third husband of Nancy? 4. Who played Bryan (or Bryant) Cummings, a boyfriend of Pamela Kingsley? 5. Do you know the names of the characters played by Susan Browning and Roberta Maxwell?

I just read that actress Kathy Bates had appeared on The Doctors. That is news to me. I remember her from both All My Children and One Life to Live. Who did she play on The Doctors. Also, I read (maybe a year ago) that actress Valerie Harper had also appeared on The Doctors. I think that this was probably in the very early years before the story became serialized. Does anyone know anything about her appearance? (I also read that Miss Harper was considered for a role in the movie version of West Side Story. I guess that her appearance on The Doctors was after that.)

Jay Devlin, who played Hank Ferguson, began on the soap operas as one of the men who sat in the lounge that Jumbo owned on Ryan's Hope. He was one of Jack's old, good friends. He was also on at least one commercial. I had gotten mixed up (which often happens). I was thinking that Edmund was the uncle of Greg. I am not sure who he was, now.

All My Children Tribute Thread
I love show with large casts, and All My Children had a large cast in those days. I don't remember a lot about Vera. I know that she was played by Grace Garland. I remember more about the character that Vanessa Bell played. (I am not sure if this is the same person as the singer Vanessa Bell Calloway.) I do remember a news co-anchor at the television stations (WPNV?). He worked with Brooke, and he was used for comedy. I did not really like him, but I remember him. My favorite character of this type was Freddie. He was played by Freddie P'cello (sure I misspelled his name). He was seen frequently as the m'atrie d at the Chateau. He never really had a storyline until the murder of Eddie Dorance by Claudette. He then was used as a witness about the crime. After that was over, he was never seen again. I think that he could have had more storyline to do, although the actor may have asked that he not be given dramatic scenes. Greg had an uncle one time played by Iggy Wolfington. I think that the show was going to give him a romance with Myrtle, but nothing ever really developed. I adored the actor who played Ellen's father Harlan. He and Kate would probably have been paired eventually, but Kay Campbell (Kate) was killed in an automobile accident. I remember the second husband of Edna, Hank Ferguson. I never cared for the Kurt and Leora storyline, although Liz Mckay was a good actress. There was a character who was introduced. I think that she was one of several attempts to come between Jesse and Angie. I cannot remember her name. I want to say that she was a rookie police officer. I liked the original Wally McFadden and have often wondered what became of the actor. The third Wally was also good, but he just did not seem to be his character (much as the third Nina did not catch on as Nina). There was some girl who was released from prison and befriended by Tom Cudahy. I thought that story should have been continued. Mr. Fawcett, who played Sean Cudahy, was one of the best new actors in daytime drama. When he returned to the show, though, he was given very little to do. He just had no good storylines during that time. I loved Trisha Pursey. It seemed for a time that she was to be paired with Dr. Chuck Tyler. I was routing for that pairing. I did not like it, though, when they paired Devon with Dr. Lynn Carson. I loved the friendship between Bonnie McFadden and Stuart Chandler. Bonnie should have been brought back into the storyline and continued that friendship. (David Canary had chemistry with all of his co-stars, particularly when he was playing Stuart!) Mark Dalton and Sybil Thorne dated briefly, but it was never serious.

I saw Kathy Glass on Return to Peyton Place and One Life to Live. She was DEFINATELY my favorite Allison McKenzie and my favorite Jenny Woleck Siegel Vernon.

There was no reason for Liza to return to the show, in my opinion. In the first weeks that she did return, the show seemed to be headed to a Lisa-Tad-Dixie triangle. That did not last very long. I could never accept that she would like Adam Chandler. To me, she was, by then, a useless character. Alfred had a sister for a short period. Her name was Alma. I know that she worked in the bank. I suspect that she was a co-worker of Sean Cudahy.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Back to Dan and Susan, Dan and Susan married a number of years before he met Liz. The character of Susan had been recast a number of times. Among the actresses who played Susan were Diana Walker (Where the Heart Is) and Jada Rowland (The Secret Storm and The Doctors). I guess that Susan and Dan met in medical school. They began dating. Both were interested in medicine, but Dan had a feeling for medicine in the humanitarian way and Susan had a feeling for medicine in the power and fame way. Both their fathers were doctors, but Dr. Stewart and Dr. Burke (played by James Karen) practiced at different hospitals (David at Memorial and Dr. Burke at City). I don't think that Susan was expecting when she married Dan. But, she soon learned that they were expecting. She did not want a child to interfere with her plans for a medical career. I am pretty sure that this was after Irna Phillips had written Another World in which Pat had an abortion. Susan decided to jump from a chair in order that she lose the baby. This, of course, caused future storylines to portray Susan as a villainess. Dan later met Liz. He fell in love with her, and she was quite innocent. They did succumb to temptation once, and Betsy learned that she was expecting Dan's child. Later, Susan also learned that she was expecting Dan's baby. The daughter of Liz (Betsy) was born first. The daughter of Susan (Emily) was born later. Marie Master's own daughter played Emily. Susan's pregnancy in real life (Marie Masters bore twins.) may have created the need for Susan's on-screen pregnancy (I don't know, but it is possible.) Susan was anxious to have Emily. She no longer felt that a baby would interfere with her lifestyle, and she was also anxious to keep Dan. Paul was the quiet younger brother of Dan. He was the biological child of David and Betty Stewart. He was a really nice character, but the show kept recasting the role. (I know that Marco St. John played the role, as did Michael Hawkins before he was cast on Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, How to Survive a Marriage, and Ryan's Hope). Paul fell in love with Liz. I am not sure if he know that Betsy was not his child, but I am thinking that he did not at the time of the marriage.

Gillian Spencer was near my hometown for a telethon (probably in 1973, but possibly in 1972). She told fans that she would be leaving the show then. She said that she was earning certification as a therapist and that she would leave acting. She left As the World Turns. She later joined All My Children as Daisy. I was extremely surprised to see her on that show. I think that she wrote for As the World Turns also. She was a story consultant for All My Children and a co-headwriter of Another World.
