Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
Here is a question for fans who were watching back in the early 1960s or scholars who have studied this show: Which of the characters were girlfriends of Lee Pollock prior to his marriage to Geraldine/Geri?

Whatever has happened to this soap opera performer?
I would love to know about what has happened to Tommy Nordan (Dr. Gary Walton #1 on Search for Tomorrow). He was a child actor who eventually starred on NBC's Flipper program.

The late Gloria Monty was also the executive producer of the primetime serial The Hamptons. She used performers from The Secret Storm (Jada Rowland) on that show.

Another World Discussion Thread
There were two different characters that were flirting with Mac. One was named Buffy, played by Gloria Hoye (from many soap operas, but she had appeared last on Somerset - from the same studio). The other was played by Ann Flood. I think that this was her fourth soap opera. I am thinking that she had been on From These Roots, Thoe Edge of Night, Search for Tomorrow, and then Another World. But, I may be wrong about the order after the cancellation of The Edge of Night.

Yes, the credits of Love of Life (and many other soap operas on lists from the 1980s - such as The Secret Storm and Somerset) lack many names. I have been thinking that she worked on Love of Life since I read that biography of her from which I earlier posted.

No, I was assuming that she was the first female director. Was there a female director prior to Ms. Monty?

This perfomer would have been good in that role
Concerning the daytime Emmy Awards a person who had some amount of fame was frequently nominated for the Daytime Emmy awards. A performer with some celebrity or a performer with a famous last name had a clear advantage. I am not sure how many times that Frances Heflin was nominated, but I think that she was. It was the same with Irene Daily. Actors such as Macdonald Carey (Days of Our Lives), Shepherd Strudwick (One Life to Live), John Bernadino (General Hospital), James Mitchell (All My Children), Juliet Mills (Passions), Julious LaRossa (Another World), Howard E. Rollins (Another World), Robert LuPone (All My Children), Timothy Gibbs (One Life to Live), Bryton James (The Young and the Restless), Dame Judith Anderson (Passions), Mary Jo Catlett (General Hospital), Sidney Penny (All My Children), Jeanne Cooper (The Young and the Restless) and Anna Maria Horsford (The Bold and the Beautiful), were nominated, and their fame before they were on daytime television helped them, I am sure. They were well known. Inaddtition, there was Emily McLauglin (the widow of Jeffrey Hunter) who was nominated. Another man to be nominated for Best Actor was Andrew Robinson (Ryan's Hope), and he was famous for a movie role that he had played. I am not saying that these performers were deserving or not deserving of a nomination, but their fame outside the world of daytime television or connections with other famous people did help them get nomiations.

Concerning Ms. Gloria Monty and Love of Life, I had gotten information from a website Academy of Holy Angels (https://wwwlholyangels.org/gloria-monty) which had stated that she had worked as a director on Love of Life. "Gloria Monty '38 Gloria Monty O’Byrne ’38 was inducted posthumously into the AHA Fine & Performing Arts Hall of Fame in 2010. Gloria used her experiences under the dome in Fort Lee as a springboard to her future successes. She was involved in the drama club, the Gay Pretenders, all four years and was named president in her senior year. Gloria also sang with the Glee Club. A classmate remarked in the 1937 edition of Echoes, “How many classes have been brightened by the spontaneous wit of Gloria Montemuro.” Gloria was just 16 when she graduated from Holy Angels. She went on to pursue a degree at the University of Iowa. She received a Master’s degree in drama from Columbia University. In 1952, Gloria married Robert O’Byrne and the two opened their own acting company in New York City. Gloria worked as a producer/director of Broadway, Off-Broadway and Summer Stock productions. In 1950, she was hired as an Associate Director for the CBS soap The First Hundred Years. A year later, she became the first woman to ever be hired as a Director tv daytime drama for Love of Life. In 1954, she became Director of CBS’ Secret Storm where she remained for ten years. "

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
I had hoped that she would write a book about The Edge of Night to cover the behind-the-scenes and the various comings and goings of the show. She was not a part of the show in its beginnings, but she was there for so much of the 1960s, the entire 1070s, and its entirety of the 1980s. Yes, you are right about her knowledge of From These Roots. Interviews about this show would have been great! Is Millette Alexander the only living performer from that show?

Actress Ann Flood (Bitsy Davidson #2 on All My Children) has passed away. Her character was on the show for more than a year. It was a recurring role at first (and created by Laurinda Barrett), but Ms. Flood was later under contract. The character was the mother of Cecily Davidson and was a major flirt of Dr. Cliff Warner.

Around the time of these expansions from 45-minutes to 60-minutes, General Hospital was considered the weakest of dramas on ABC. Also around this time, The Edge of Night suddenly began adding new characters (This was during the Denise Cavanaugh storyline) and many of the new characters could have been utilized if The Edge of Night had been expanded. But, after the ratings rose for General Hospital, the thought of expanding The Edge of Night was dropped and many of the new characters suddenly left the show. Gloria Monty, who had directed both Love of Life and (for many years) The Secret Storm became the new executive producer of General Hospital and actually had the cast retape at least one episode. I think that she made several cast changes (including bringing back Leslie Charleston, who had been on A Flame in the Wind, As the World Turns, and Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, back to daytime television after being a primetime guest on many shows for several years). Douglas Marland, who had left his position of head writer of The Doctors, was hired as the new head writer of General Hospital. Ada Chandler (who had been on The Edge of Night when it was on CBS and was played by Billie Allen) was brought back to the show and was working closely with Dr. Miles Cavanaugh and his friend Dr. Dave Roper. (The late Miki Grant, who had played Peggy Harris on Another World, was Ada #2.) Dr. Dave Roper ((Herb Downer), Dr. Gus Norwood (Wyman Pendleton), and Tressa "Tree" Worthington (Marilyn Randall) were all added - and it seemed as though a minority-race triangle was festering to form among Ada, Dave and Tree. (I am not even mentioning that Ada was married to Lt. Luke Chandler - played by Herb Davis, who had earlier appeared on One Life to Live). The nurse in the office of Dr. Miles Cavanaugh (Carole Barclay, played by the wonderful Polly Adams), who had been a recurring character, was given a contract as a member of the regular cast. A new co-anchor on WMON with Nicole was also added briefly, and this may have been around the same time.

I thought that One Life to Live and the serial General Hospital expanded to 45-minutes and later to 60-minutes on the same days. The game shows that had been airing on ABC (such as Family Feud) eventually disappeared or moved to the mornings. The Edge of Night was airing during the final timeslot that ABC aired. Ryan's Hope was moved initially to a timeslot which was thirty minutes earlier initially. (And Ryan's Hope later switched timeslots with Loving - and many people had said that this led to the cancellation of Ryan's Hope).
