Ratings from the 80's
July 1983 ABC recaptures daytime race lead NEW YORK—After three straight weeks of daytime losses to CBS, ABC pulled back into the lead for the July 18-22 period. While ABC's 7.0 rating just edged out CBS' 6.9, they both came in with an audience share of 24. NBC finished with a 5.4/19. While CBS had earlier taken over the lead from ABC, its audience had not increased significantly. ABC had lost viewers largely as a result of replacing reruns of The Love Boat with Too Close for Comfort and the soap Loving on June 27. While running a soap before noon was an unusual step in itself, ABC officials noted that new soaps always take time to build audiences and the low ratings for Loving had been expected. Despite losing the daytime ratings to CBS from June 27 to July 8, ABC continued its dominance among women aged 18-49. Nielsen demographic figures, released last week, showed ABC reaching 3.4 million such women, CBS 2.4 million and NBC 1.65 million. Meanwhile, NBC replaced its noon Battlestars game with Facts of Life reruns on July 4, and zoomed to its highest share in the time period in three years. The following week, Sale of the Century at 10:30 a.m. and Dream House at 11:30 achieved their highest shares ever. As NBC's daytime ratings rise steadily, the network is making moves to replace its lowest-rated show Fantasy, which airs from 3-4 p.m. One possibility is Personal and Confidential, which begins a one-week tryout today, Aug. I. The Alan Lands burg Production, hosted by Steve Edwards, features "segments on some of today's hottest topics" along with celebrity interviews. ABC, CBS neck and neck in daytime race NEW YORK—CBS and ABC tied for the daytime ratings lead for the week of July 25-29. Both received a 6.7 in the Nielsens, but CBS had a 24 share as compared with ABC's 23. ABC fell from a 7.0/24a week earlier, while CBS dropped from a 6.9/24. NBC, on the other hand, rose from 5.4/19 to 5.5/20. The top five programs were General Hospital (ABC), All My Children (ABC), the second halfhour of The Price is Right (CBS), The Young and the Restless (CBS) and As the World Turns (NBC). CBS grabs daytime ratings victory NEW YORK—CBS-TV won the daytime ratings for the fourth time in the last six weeks. For the week of Aug. 1-5, CBS averaged a 6.9, ABC a 6.8, and NBC a 5.7. In common time ratings, CBS scored its biggest win over ABC since October 1978-7.9 to 6.8. NBC had a 5.8. The highest rated show was the second half hour of The Price is Right on CBS, with a 9.8 rating and 38 share. NBC's one-week tryout of Personal and Confidential in place of the fading Fantasy finished dead last out of 26 programs, with a 3.3/11. 'Facts of Life' won noon time period NEW YORK—Facts of Life won the noon period for NBC from Aug. 1-5, the first time the network has won the time period in four years. The show's 19 share was the highest since July 1978. During the same week, Search for Tomorrow, which was receiving much publicity because it was forced to go live for a day, received a 13 share—its highest in 14 months. ABC tops early morning, daytime ratings NEW YORK—ABC topped the early morning and daytime ratings in the week of Aug. 15-19. Maintaining its dominance in the early morning, Good Morning America posted a 4.6 rating and 25 share with CBS Morning News and NBC's Toda' tied for second at 3.6 and 19. In the daytime battle. ABC was on top with a 7.3 rating and 24 share, followed by CBS with a 6.9 and 24 and NBC at 5.6 and 19. ABC had the top two daytimers with General Hospital at a 10.2 rating and All My Children at 10.1.

Loving/The City Discussion Thread
Broadcast Week May 30th 1983 NEW YORK—Loving, ABC's first new daytime television drama in eight years, debuts as a two-hour Sunday Night Movie June 26. The weekday series enters its 11:30 a.m.-noon EDT slot the following day. This is the first time that ABC has launched a daytime serial in prime time. CBS took a similar route with Capitol, which debuted with a one-hour special following top-rated Dallas on Friday night last year. Unlike its standard made-fors, however, ABC has shot the two-hour special on videotape instead of film. "The decision to shoot the pilot on tape was made in terms of utilizing the same sets for the future series," said Joe Stuart, producer. "But with the amount of lighting and special angles we wanted, we ended up shooting it like a film, and never really cut it the way a serial is cut." Emmy-winning veteran soap writer Agnes Nixon (All My Children, One Life to Live and others) and Douglas Marland are the show's head writers. Key characters are a television anchorwoman and a politically ambitious university president. Lloyd Bridges and Geraldine Page appear in the pilot. Future appearances in, the regular series are not ruled out. "The show has a broad scope, dealing with all generations," Stuart said. "Loving is more of a philosophical description, including sexual and sensual loving but also the love of people for one another—father, mother, children, brother to brother and sister to sister." The show has been on a tight schedule. Production began in January, and the special began taping in April. The movie was shot in 22 days, half in the studio and half on location in and around New York. It was then edited from 9 a.m. to midnight for 13 days straight. Shooting for the regular series begins this week. "It was a crash program to have the sets ready for April," Stuart said. "God at times was kind to us and at other times tested our mettle. Joe Stuart "During the last scene shot for the special, it was supposed to be summer. The two characters were dressed for summer, but it was 40 degrees. During one of the night scenes shot at 2 a.m., it started to snow. As much as you can do with electronic cameras, you cannot make it not snow." ABC rented a photographer's studio in Manhattan for a mass photo session for the show's cha racte rs.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
In early 1967 Konrad Matthei (Roy McGuire) took six weeks off ATWT to film an obscure Australian movie 'Journey Into Darkness' In an interview, he says his last day before departing was Roy slipping into a church to see Sandy(his ex wife) marrying Bob Hughes. As the show was live at that time, it means Bob and Sandy were married January 1967. I've never seen a date for that marriage before. In his absence Roy went off to Medical school. Konrad mused that Roy would probably be a fully fledged doctor when he returned to Oakdale. I know Roy married Penny but not much else about the character. Does anyone know more about Roy McGuire?

Search For Tomorrow Discussion Thread
Nov 83 NEW YORK—Reeves Teletape's 81st St. studio here was transformed recently into an abandoned warehouse for a special two-day taping of NBC TV's Search for Tomorrow. Reeves provided the Search crew with a Chapman Crane, an RCA TK46 and several Steadicams with Ikegami 79B lenses for the "film-style" shoot, which took place in the studio and outside on 81st St. To turn the studio into a warehouse, the sets were extended to twice their normal height—almost 20 feet—and the lighting was redesigned. Several night scenes were filmed outside on 81st St. between Amsterdam Ave. and Broadway. Was this for the Jo kidnap story?

Another World Discussion Thread
Did Iris come to Bay City due to Dennis having health problems and Russ being his doctor, thus leading to Russ/Iris romance? Or have I got this mixed up. Mac was first on the scene played by the first actor who was not the dashing catch portrayed by Douglass Watson. Although the story is there was no intention to pair up Rachel and Mac, I wonder what the original plans were when Mac was recast with a more attractive actor?
