Y&R: Old Articles
That's right, today marks 46 years in the game. Maybe someday EB first episode will surface. It was the combination of EB acting and Bill Bell writing that made Victor character arc a success. We saw Victor go from short-term villain to anti-hero/romantic leading man plus the backstory of his painful childhood (abandoned by both parents and growing up in an orphanage) and becoming a self-made man. Bill Bell saw what EB brought to Y&R, changed the initial storyline, and we know the rest. I quoted Bill Bell's own words on Victor Newman from the 1997 book Worlds Without End: The Art and History of the Soap Opera earlier in this thread. Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
1982/83 was CBS sitcom transition season. M*A*S*H ended, Newhart premiered, The Jeffersons and One Day at a Time fell out of the Top 10, Archie Bunker's Place ended, and Alice was moved around the schedule (from Sunday 9 pm to Wednesday 9 pm, Sunday 9:30 pm, Monday 9 pm, Sunday 9:30 pm) which lead to a Top 30 fallout.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
September 1992-January 1993 wasn't bad but the big cast departures of the summer (Kimberley Simms, Sherry Stringfield, Beverlee McKinsey) left a noticeable void in the canvas. Then of course came Maureen Bauer death and GL was never the same after that. Aftermath of Maureen death until Nancy Curlee left the writing team was a chore to watch, but at least we got to see Michael Zaslow finally get his long-awaited for Lead Actor Daytime Emmy.

Ratings from the 1990s
You're welcome. Yeah, 1997/98 was pretty bad as well. The final five seasons of the 1990s (1995/96 to 1999/2000) were on the whole not very good.

Ratings from the 1990s
@soapfan770 Thanks for posting 1996 Super Bowl week. 1995/96 not a very good season. ER reaches #1 and Friends blows up. The rest of the broadcast network primetime lineups that weren't NBC Thursday, not looking so good.

Murder, She Wrote
30 years ago this month. That Time Murder, She Wrote Took A Swing at Friends The Time 'Murder, She Wrote' Had Serious Beef With 'Friends' | Cracked.com When 'Friends' Killed Off 'Murder, She Wrote' “I mean, who would have thought a group of twenty-something young people sitting around all day long discussing their sexuality would turn out to be a top TV show?” Angela Lansbury and her shade, I love it. Remember that a decade earlier she shaded the new hotness Miami Vice by calling it Miami Heat.

Primetime Soaps
When factoring in ratings, critical acclaim, place in television history and pop culture, and influence on other dramas, I'd say the definitive dramas of the 1990s were ER, NYPD Blue, 90210, and Melrose.

Knots Landing
Thanks for the info. I haven't seen the 1989/90 episodes of Dallas in a long time. That season was a waste of time anyway, but that's neither here nor there for this thread.
