Re: Jay Hammer. I saw Hammer the other night on a 1972 episode of Emergency. He was was an orderly at the hospital hitting on a Nurse played by Deidre Hall(Days). A few episodes prior Trish Stewart (Y&R) played a fashion model who Johnny (Randolph Mantooth) was hitting on but she liked Chet (because of his mustache). A lot of soap actors appeared on this show during it run. Jeanne Copper, Bennye Gatteys, Susan Seaforth Hays etc... Re: Bert Bauer. Bert in later years really was rewritten as the kind loving Mother/Grandmother/Matriarch. The later audiences would be shocked what a snobby stuck up witch she started out as. It reminds me how Katherine was rewritten on Y&R in the 80's as the town earth mother and it was swept under the rug what an alcoholic booze bag she was cheating on her husband Phillip with stable boys and taking advantage of young Jill. By the 80's Jill was now the bad one who victimized Katherine.

I wonder if the car crash was in studio or if they did it on location?

Justice appeared in a 1974 chilling episode of Hawaii Five-0. In it she plays a housewife and her husband is played by Alan Fudge. John Beck (Flamingo Road & Dallas) without the mustache plays a psycho cop who is raping and killing women on the island. She gets raped by him in her own home and she and her husband doesn't want to cooperate with Five-0 because of the shame and embarrassment it might bring. Later she sees a snapshot of Beck (with his signature mustache) and starts screaming. She and her husband agree to press charges. Akan Fudge is another one of those actors that pops up constantly in vintage tv. James Olson is another.

Another thing that degraded the later seasons of Dallas and Knots was they switched the type of film and equipment they used and it made both shows look cheap and low budget. Those early years had beautiful cinematography.

Justice pops up a lot on old TV shows from the 60's and 70's. She was in the very first adaption of Columbo when it was a one off TV movie in 1968 before it was made into the series. In the first film Falk really hadn't developed the character yet. The second TV film in 1971 that sold the series starred the wonderful Lee Grant as the murderer. Peter Falk really found the character of Columbo in that one with his signature disheveled look and daffy demeanor. Justice was pushing 40 when she played Hope circa 1977/78.

Did Justice have much to do as Hope ? It seems when Elvera appears in March 1979 the character has been away for a while and is being rebooted. The Dobson's were excellent at setting up Alan And Hope with them on the island. It was another blow to Mike that he couldn't have Elizabeth because of Alan's interference and now his daughter falls in love with him.

That writer liked to use the word "thrice" a lot, unless that is a typo. I don't think I have ever met a person in real life that used that word in a conversation.

Those final years of Dallas are awful. I don't think I have watched an entire episode from them in 30 years. I always stop after Victoria departs.

Patrick coming back really ruined things for good. I was never invested in the Jenna/Charlie/Naldo mess either. If Morgan Fairchild had returned in the role, I may have given a crap. It's ironic Pam goes out in a flaming car crash after a drunken Sue Ellen was constantly getting into wrecks. I noticed Patrick strangely wants to play up the Bobby & April love story at fan events.....when in reality the fans only cared about Bobby & Pam.

That interview reminds me of a story Kay Alden told. She said that when she first met Bill Bell and interviewed him, he was surprised she was so enthusiastic about soap writing. He had been interviewed by a journalism class shortly before and they pretty much dismissed that he wrote soaps and and ripped him apart. They thought people in soaps were low life trash.

Dallas made so many mistakes in their writing and handling of characters. Victoria was smart to leave a sinking ship. The show is pretty much unwatchable to me after her departure.- Dallas Discussion Thread
Exactly. Larry and Patrick would screw up scenes trying to be funny. Imagine as an actor in the middle of a scene and nailing it then they have to cut because of all that juvenile crap and having to reshoot and work long hours. Patrick Duffy became insufferable when he returned. He, Larry, and Katzaman returned to the "Boys Club" mentality and threw the women under the bus. I think Katzman got rid of Phil Capice and was given immunity to do whatever he wanted to do. He overrode David Jacobs when he told Katzman that Bobby's death as a dream was a stupid plot.- Primetime Soaps
That is heartbreaking. I read he had a mental breakdown in the mid 1960's. By 1968 he had recovered and did the TV movie pilot that sold Marcus Welby M.D. as a series. He won an Emmy in 1970. Suzanne Pleshette who guest starred in the first season said "He was an interesting sad man". She said he was professional but didn't come away really knowing him and there was a wall there. James Brolin said they had no relationship off set.- One Life to Live Tribute Thread

Yes, in the early 90's. According to the story his wife was bedridden by that point (she was also a drinker). He told her he was going to commit suicide. He went out to the garage and tried to start the car. It wouldn't so he calls a mechanic to come out. When the mechanic arrives he notices the hose hooked to the exhaust. He secretly calls the police and they come out. They find Mrs. Young in the bed drunk and she confirms that he told her wanted to die and was going to end it all. I think they talked him into checking into a psychiatric ward for help. Young later made a statement apologizing for his rash behavior. Mrs. Young later died and Robert young lived till 1998 suffering from Alzheimer's. Elinor Donahue said she visited him shortly before he died when he was having a good day and he remembered her.- Somerset Discussion Thread
I would like to see episodes of "Nancy" with Renne Jarrett, but only thing that has surfaced are the opening credits and one short promo. Jarrett and Stauffer divorced by the late 70's and she later married TV Producer Bruce Bilson. - Soap Snapshots
