  1. because we could all use a little giggle: from frank bruni’s for the love on sentences. In The Baltimore Sun, Dan Rodricks quipped: “Donald Trump saying he won’t debate Kamala Harris a second time is like the Thanksgiving turkey saying he won’t be available for Christmas dinner.” (Barbara Sale, Baltimore)
  2. this was the first time i’d heard of daniel mccarthy and modern age. have to say, i kinda love this observation: ”McCarthy Harris’s lectern was too short, accentuating how much smaller she is.” not sure if there was any scarcasem to detect:)
  3. when ever trump, or one of his surrogates, would say that she depends on the teleprompter and i wished that someone would point out that the woman was a prosecutor and district attorney and there are no teleprompters in the courtroom!
  4. I don't believe they did. I was just mentioning that he started earlier than those roles. Imagine if an old Searchepisode turned up with Jones pushing Jo or Patti around while in the hospital, though for sure, p&g in particular, were awful about archiving those early episodes — cheaper to tape over and not have to worry about space to store the tapes. laurie caso once told me that there were only about a dozen available. was not aware of jones’s earlier soap appearances, but not surprised. the big deal about jones, micki grant on another world, and billy dee williams and cicely tyson on guiding light is that they were the first black actors to be put on contract. of course, in 1962, rex ingram became the first black actor on contract. but the show, ‘the brighter day,’ was cancelled 2 weeks after his first episode. bad optics for sure, but the show had been moved from the late afternoon to late morning and the ratings were tanking, so it’s unlikely his appearance was a much of a factor.
  5. free link to ny times obit, which mentions him as one of the first black actors in soaps. james earl jones obit

  8. in 1962, rex ingram became the first black actor on contract. but the show, ‘the brighter day,’ was cancelled 2 weeks after his first episode. bad optics for sure, but the show had been moved from the late afternoon to late morning and the ratings were tanking, so it’s unlikely his appearance was a much of a factor. in may 1965, irna phillips appeared on kup’s show in chicago and lambasted p&g for not permitting her to integrate ‘as the world turns.’ that july, micki grant was on contract at ‘another world.’ in january 1966, james earl jones was on contract at ‘world turns, billy dee williams and cicely tyson joining gl. jones left ‘world turns after a few months to develop his breakout role in ‘the great white hope’ at the arena stage in washington, dc. when he returned to nyc, he replaced williams at gl. later, ruby dee would replace cicely tyson.
  9. Julianne Moore was the onscreen pairing but Weber was also once married to actress Finn Carter who portrayed Sierra Esteban Montgomery. Tonya Pinkins, who played Heather Dalton also mentioned their friendship and her brief crush turning into some kind of weird energy between them when Weber and Carter became a couple and how Pinkins felt somewhat hurt by it, although I can understand how a married couple could become protective of their relationship to the point of exclusion when their job requires them to be romantically intimate with actors who are not their irl partners. They were all relatively young and there were probably misunderstandings at work i think he also may have overlapped with marissa tomei, who was there 1984-5
  10. you cannot make this [!@#$%^&*] up! house republicans subpoena tim walz
  11. woo hoo! from ‘the hill.’ ny times has it, as well. liz cheney voting for harris
  12. interesting take on north carolina from frank bruni in the ny times. gift link. frank bruni on north carolina
  13. just saw this on linkedin — tomorrow@3 steven weberib the locher room
  14. i’ve been meaning to discuss what has been bothering me about the discussion re gus walz’s emotional display at the dnc. while most of the conversation centered on that fact that gus is on the spectrum, what i think is the most important part of the reaction of the maga right has gotten lost in the shuffle. here’s an early post from some radio dj, jay weber: “Sorry, but this is embarrassing for both father and son,” the WISN-AM radio jockey wrote last week on X. “If the Walzs [sic] represent today’s American man, this country is screwed; ‘Meet my son, Gus. He’s a blubbering bitch boy. His mother and I are very proud.’” while weber deleted the post after learning that gus is neurodivergent, that misses the point: the maga crowd has a narrow, hypermasculine view of male behavior; and any male who would allow the world see him display raw emotions is a “blubbering bitch boy” and “the country is screwed” to which i say “[!@#$%^&*] you, jay weber — [!@#$%^&*] you!”
  15. this is entertaining — in particular the one re jd vance. free link. gail collins quiz
  16. not sure of your point; vance is a catholic convert.
  17. wish someone would ask him how he feels about priests and nuns influencing children.
  18. this is a perfect description of what it means to be pro-choice!
  19. i was a little surprised, and pleased, to see kate mulgrew coming out for kamala. for a long time, she was a hardline pro-lifer, having given up a daughter for adoption in the 1970s. missed that that she had denounced dobbs, saying that while it wasn’t her choice, it was a choice each woman had to make for herself.
  20. a brief, insightful analysis of the dnc from a.o. scott at the ny times. so pleased that he included michelle obama’s goldilocks advice. free link: a.o.scott—seven words
  21. this really is a topic worthy of its own thread — maybe even a doctoral dissertation — or at least a masters thesis. so many factors at play. so many of the people inside the industry who never really understood why fans watch, and how they enjoy soaps. a while back, i was discussing focus groups (ro as eileen fulton liked to call them, fuckus groups), with a former exec at nbc and abc daytime, and he said that it was a plus if the person running the group actually watched soaps. a plus?! how about a prerequisite? how could someone who didn’t even watch soaps asked the right questions, or properly interpret the responses. and that’s just one example. when i have a few minutes, i’ll share my thoughts on jill farren phelpes interview with alan locher a while back.
  22. That's just how those creeps are in that element, it's baked in sadly. But the larger public reaction has for the most part been very positive. I'm sure Trump will, and let him; it'll only hurt him more. my point exactly!
  23. the mocking of gus’s tears has already started in the usual places. what’s the over/under on how long can trump resist the urge to join in?
  24. was trying to post this reply to a comment re michelle obama’s speech just at the comments were closed. putting it here instead. @JL “Michelle is a classy woman and that she has to remind us to ignore our tendency to nitpick and worry that a bill or a stance or a decision is not perfect, is a reminder that democracy is incremental, messy, but must advance at all costs.” this! i can’t remember it verbatim, but she said something about goldilocks and things not having to be “just right.” i wish more people picked up on this, because we need to pay attention to this because some on the left are such ideological purists that they’ve been standing in the way of moving forward.
  25. maybe their misguided sense of irony? that’s all a got! just came across this — the photograph is a hoot. trump and the queen
