  1. Here's a question I've had for a long time and perhaps one of you soapstorians might be able to answer. Why did GL replace the 2002 opening with an even worse one in Spring 2003? When I started watching GL in 2003, they had just switched over to the new opening (the sliding images with Guiding Light running across) and I only became aware of the previous one on some website at the time. I mean the flying Bingo chips wasn't amazing, but the one that followed was pretty sad. I remember thinking that anyone in my HS graphic design class at the time could probably manage to create that opening. Why was Bingo chips opening replaced when it was in use for such a short time? I'm not sure how soap openings are changed or how that decision is made as they are such long running shows, whether it's arbitrary or when new producers come on or something else. Days has essentially maintained the same opening it started with, others maintained the same theme over the course of their run, and then GL the lighthouse or variations of it and them others did not.

I don’t believe it has been, the only 2000 episode I’ve remember seeing repeated before was Billy&Mac being named King & Queen at prom for in like 2001 or something.

Hearst was great in the role but I can see him being considered too old for it. I like the idea of him coming on a new Jabot or Newman executive though, he would have nailed it after his Alan-Michael days. I know the show was disappointed in seeing him go and had kept stretching it with his ghostly appearances.

Thank you. Not sure why the episode seemed familiar, may just have been something about the episode that felt familiar.

I think Hearst is wonderful. One of the bright spots when I watched GH. I actually wasn't aware he was on GL until fairly recently and I watched some episodes and he was a great Alan Michael.

  3. They really could have done all these weddings at St. Luke's and filmed them at the same time with a few wardrobe changes. I guess they spent their budget on Steve's key to city plaque. They could have held a reception at Julie's Place instead of a wedding and had some [!@#$%^&*] go down there.

Wow, Days just spent all that budget on those extras for that airport scene. I've noticed they've had a lot of extras lately.

  4. That was cute. Stephen and Mary Beth are great :)

It's bad when a network show is laughing at another network show like it's a joke, but it does seem ridiculous. I know that it will probably look much better than it sounds, but BB rushing into production and returning like business as usual I fear will not be very successful. They will blame the month lapse but really they'll probably do the bare minimum to promote the return and come back with the same stories that were already bad to begin with.

I suggest using Banarama's Cruel Summer for a promo with BB's greatest villains. Each week dedicated to a condensed arc for each villain. "It's going to be a Cruel Summer on CBS Daytime." More like a lukewarm make out with a doll Fall to look forward to.

As someone who was pretty young in 1995 the Possession was cool and made me a John/Marlena fan, but Kristen/John/Marlena and Carrie/Austin/Sami kept me.  I was never a huge fan of Bo/Hope though.  That all being said, the Possession is not something I re-watch and even cringe at now.  But all my friends watched/taped it after school, so it had to be geared to younger viewers.  I think Days was often #1 in 18-49, but I could be wrong.  It also was a refreshing change of pace to my other soap GH, which was pretty depressing, albeit awesome, in 1995.

Days had a few weeks at #1 in 1995 and did well in the demos most of that year, but in 1996 it was pretty much #1 every week.

    Well...

That's a no for me. It was enough that they replaced a 20+ year character/actor Ridge with a new actor that didn't quite fit IMO and should have just written off...and it's not a stretch for people to have new faces nowadays...it's LA afterall (and Hunter Tylo hasn't shied away from a little nip tuck herself either) but if Kristian were to come on to BB, I'd rather she play someone new. I'm not a fan of vets getting replaced espeically long running ones that have been on since the beginning or very early on.

How about GL? Days changes happened around 2007-now. GL went from fine in 2004/05 to peapack and csncelled 3/4 years later.

I was watching episodes from 2003 on Youtube around the time I first started watching GL, and I was shocked how many sets, extras and production value the show still had - it puts the soaps today to shame and we know even then GL's budget probably lagged behind all others with the exception of Passions (possibly). I had forgotten that there was still some budget then as the last few years were so poor. The 2005 budget cuts really did change the feel of GL but it was still ok and then the cheap handheld cameras really made it hard to watch for me. Unfortunately, I was at a time where I wasn't watching consistently and the look was just very HS TV production and pushed me away. I know eventually things got better but I had fallen out of the habit and GL ended soon after.

They were the first to do a downtown set which looked good at first but then quickly got misused, like holding Ross’ funeral there. Not to mention it was always poorly lighted and feel unrealistic. I’d GL’s downhill moment production wise of that era was them using a hideously ugly green colored set for Cedars Hospital.

Yes, the green hospital :) I remember that well. It was definitely strange, because I recall that the hospital looked different for the Michelle amnesia storyline in 2005 and then when Reva was in the hospital in 2006, it was green and with some wood panels and just didn't look good.

The downtown set was cute, but as you mentioned not well utilized.

jabot IS a french word.  Pronounced zha-bo.

    here’s the definition from merriam-webster:

a pleated frill of cloth or lace attached down the center front of a woman's blouse or dress.

Yes, my French teacher tried to explain this to me, but I thought it didn't make much sense with the brand.

My mother actually remember that back in 1994, when the show first started airing in my country, it was so big, that people would skip everything to watch. Streets would be empty. And these were the first amazing years of episodes, so back then while I was in her tummy... she watched it and sometimes she jokes that maybe I heard the show inside and that's why I loved it when I grew up. It was my ritual to watch it and after it was perceived to girly for a boy to watch Bold, my father forbid it. I would not sleep to watch the early morning repeat, so that my father won't see me watching the girly show. Maybe that's why I become so obsessed. It was my first ever rebellion. I would tape and secretly watch the episodes again. I was in love with Stephanie and Brooke and Sheila... there were the silent moments of the morning, when everyone would sleep and I would be in my secret dark world of Bold and Beautiful. It changed my life.

That's sweet. It's nice that it meant so much and was so special for you. Did the perception of soaps in your country become seen as a girly thing over time or do you think your age may have been the issue? Like your dad was fine with you watching when you were younger, because he saw it as no big deal then but as you got older he saw it as threatening to your masculinity? Or maybe a bit of both.

Ah ah it is funny how the French dubbing is « Jabot » with the « t » pronounced. So the first time I watched Y&R in English when the Internet appeared, I was so shocked to hear it pronounced « Jabo »

Yes, that's part of the reason I thought it was French. My teacher even asked me to spell it 🤣

I have never watched Days but I’d watch bad CSPAN OR Guiding Light.  I don’t get it.  The commercials when I have NBC affiliates On never make sense week to week.  I see previews and think what happened to the story from last week?  It looks terrible. Stefano is alive!  But he’s 40 years younger.   Someone is giving a baby away!  Here are some gay baby daddies!  Here’s Marlena!  Patch and Kayla might be back!  I just read recaps and see commercials and it’s bad.

Yeh, unfortunately you're not all wrong. I have been watching and I will say there is a lot of potential, some great vets, some good newbies too, and stories that could work - but it just seems all over the place and the delivery can be very messy.

I still don't know the concept of GH... Sonny's World?

You know what...that's what Port Charles should have probably been about. A half-hour drama about the life of notorious mob boss Sonny Corinthos and his family, a frantic mayor trying to get control of the organized crime plaguing the city, the PCPD and other branches of the PC criminal justice system, and of course tie in some scandal and love in the afternoon. It also would have alleviated the chokehold Sonny has on GH

I noticed that too. It was great to see Marilyn McCoo again, but she did seem a little checked out.

I actually researched the character when she popped up Monday, because I've been trying to figure out who's who and how these characters are related since I started watching recently. I was surprised that McCoo's character was actually on Days for a brief period in the 80s, but I was even more surprised by the fact that the character was being played by the same actress especially since the role did not last long and decades have passed.

    I did find this clip
