^Colleen is such a stunner!! (And still is) That photo of Denise - wow that takes me back! She was on ATWT when I started watching in 2000 but she didn't last very long. Was she a major player for awhile? I have vague memories of her and Ben. Heck, Ben himself is a character that I feel was on the show for a long time when I watched but never really did anything/had a major storyline? There don't seem to be a lot of episodes from the 90's available on YT but I'm hoping that, by the time I get there, more will have been uncovered. I'm hoping to learn more about Denise, Andy, Ben, Camille (?), and of course to learn about the Carly/Brad/Jack/Roseanna characters from their beginning. Right now, I'm still stuck in Laura Simmons Land. Currently she's just popping up around town freaking out around different people. The writers strike is obvious at this point. A lot is happening but it's all too quick - like the writers are just ticking off each box that includes a piece of the puzzle. There's no elegance to it. The seams are showing. But if it means they get through this storyline quickly, I'm all for it! In fact, the writers strike may have been the best thing to happen to this story. I've been trying to imagine the long slow burn that Marland probably created for it. Also, I don't think I mentioned this earlier but, during the laura/Kim confrontation scene, Kim's "It's not gonna work, Toots. You have miscalculated." is one of the great lines that I shall never forget. The hubby and I have often quoted it during the past few weeks since it has happened.

Thank you!! I took a screen shot of your explanation so that I have it for the future. I have such a difficult time keeping it straight - they didn't do a very good job in the aughts explaining that. I also spent the better part of a decade thinking that Lily and Holden were related because they never mentioned that Iva was also adopted. The same thing with Parker. After BH died, the show spent the next 5 years as if Parker was Jack's son. Even casting a dark haired kid for the SORAS. (Or perhaps the SORAS caused his hair to turn color?) My husband only knew me during its last 2 years and it wasn't until the end that I realized he thought Parker was Jack's kid. I had to explain it to him. He asked me about Dusty the other day as well ("Wait a minute. Dusty is John's son?") but I couldn't remember it well enough to explain it! Yeah - that's why I had some difficulty getting into the Tad Channing murder. (Well, that and that, to me, it was obvious who the killer was during the week long set up.) There's a good month and a half chunk missing, I believe? I just remember it suddenly jumped from the murder just happened (or maybe a little bit after) and then Denise is being "attacked" at Mona Lisa's.

Re: the 1983 episode posted - I watched that, I guess it must have been 2016. That was the autumn when I watched all the random episodes I could find of 1980-1985. (Yes - because last year, 2017, I watched 1986 & 1987. Sorry - trying to keep it all straight in my head!) The James Stenbeck DVD is one of only 2 of their ATWT releases that I didn't get before they collapsed. I was so grateful to see the end of James' first stint on the show. I was also grateful for the other few episodes that exist from that time. Getting to see him in all of his youth-glory, and to see some of the James/John rivalry play out, was a hoot. I can't believe HBS was Margo already back then. She has been with the show much longer than I thought! I guess, now that I think about it, Margo and Tom married in early '83 and Margo was still MC then. So HBS must be very new to the show. Also...I'm trying to keep Dusty/James/John lineage correct in my head. James is not really a Stenbeck. Gunnar is though because they were switched at birth? Do I have that right? And Dusty is John's "son" because John married Dusty's mother (James' ex?) and somehow got custody of Dusty when they divorced? So Dusty is actually James Stenbeck's son...but because James isn't really a Stenbeck, Dusty isn't really a Stenbeck either. That's how it is in my head. Someone PLEASE correct me/set me straight if I have some of that wrong. I'm trying to keep it straight as I go forward with the show! That just looks like a fan has stolen everything they can off of YouTube and have packaged together a collection to make some money off of work that other people have gone to such trouble to share with fans for free?

Am at May 11, 1988. (Post originally said "1998" - oops!) Craig is back now! A year off the show - doing The Facts of Life during that time and I don't know what else - and he's already back. I've grown to love Scott Bryce's Craig so much. It's good to have him on the show again! Of course, Sierra has left the show at this point. I'm hoping she comes back for some sort of reunion? Craig just called her in Montega and we neither saw her nor heard her voice so I'm not counting on it. The Laura Simmons stuff is all out in the open now. Herb Petrie is the only one who believes her. I love everyone else's reactions: Kim's, Tom's, even Hal's - not a single one of them believes her for a second. I've heard from people on here that the writers strike moves quickly at the start as the fake writers burn through the story. Thank God for that! I have a feeling this Laura story would've been drawn out all summer if Marland and his crew were involved with it. I'm going to be happy to see the back end of this storyline.

^That makes a lot of sense @DRW50 I can see how she really has no other option with that material, other than going OTT. It's a shame to saddle one of your legacy actresses with crap but, on the other hand, at least they weren't pushing her to the back for younger characters? Oof, that whole thing just seems like an absolute mess.

IMO, Heche finally embodied Marley when they sent her away for awhile and she got to explore the role away from Bay City. Just her and the new Jamie figuring out who they were. After that, she was pretty much flawless as an actress. Her scenes as both sisters in her final year and a half is some truly stunning work. Several people who didn't watch the show but came in and out of the room while it aired always commented on how they couldn't believe that was the same actress playing both roles. I never enjoyed Wheeler as either character - just a personal preference. I *did* enjoy Buchanan - although at the start, just like Heche, I enjoyed her Vicky better than her Marley. At some point, I don't remember when, her Marley grew on me. Probably right around the time I stopped watching the show in '94/'95.

I missed a lot of the middle Luke/Noah stuff. I was touring for parts of 2005/6 (this was before you could easily catch up with your soaps online) and didn't see a lot of it ATWT. When I came back in 2006, Luke was gay and hiding it. I saw the stuff with Kevin, saw the serial killer storyline, missed the Daniel Hugh-Kelly segment, and then was touring again and saw a day or two with Lau. I've had the hots for him since I was a little boy watching All My Children so I was so disappointed that I missed that storyline. Now it sounds as if I should be glad of it. I think the show handled the gay storylines as well as they could have. Michael Landon's daughter whose character name I can't come up with right now was so popular at the time and had the whole Perils-Of-Pauline thing going and I could see that they were trying to do the same thing to Luke. I could appreciate the fact that were letting the gay kid have just as many crazy storylines as they were doing to other characters - although I still didn't enjoy most of what I saw. It wasn't until Reid came on that I really became involved with Luke - loved Luke and Reid together! Luke was a "Lily" character - I feel like you either enjoy that sort of thing or ya don't, you know? Edited to say: GWEN!!

Oh my Lord - I feel so DUPED!!! FOOLED! I'm such a naive little twit - I actually believed Joe!!!!!! I felt so bad for him and how Jack and the Ryan's were treating him now that he's back....WELL...Today was Episode 1502 where we find out that Joe hired someone to do everything to the Crystal Palace so that he could get buy it. I still don't know all the details of what's going on but, apparently, my husband does! He just "watches" the show here and there when he's walking through the room and it's on. But I found out today that when Joe left last year, my husband did a google search to find out if the character ever came back and, in doing so, discovered the full story. He said it's been hell for him to keep his mouth shut this entire time ESPECIALLY ever since the character returned a few months ago and I've been so vocal about how awful the Ryan's are being to him, etc. LOL I'm just absolutely floored. I didn't see that coming at all. I agree - she really makes me feel for Jill and relate to her. I wasn't a big fan of the KGJ storyline but I think, at some point, I mentioned on here that Nancy managed to make me understand what the character was thinking and feeling and, at some point, won me over. It's a rare talent.

Dynasty: Discussion Thread
^So ture. I can't find the article from Entertainment Weekly from last fall, but I did write on this board, at the time, that a big wig at CW, who was being interviewed, said that they had already unofficially renewed Dynasty because of the Netflix sales.

Jade was one of those characters that I absolutely could not stand. I flitted in and out of ATWT at that point, I remember. I did watch the serial killer storyline of '06 and I was convinced (read: hoped) that she would was the killer! (Of course, the writers very cleverly pushed me in that direction all the while making me think I had come up with it on my own.) I know many people didn't like Janet and her daughter (can't come up with the name right now) but I enjoyed them. Jade and Gwen were the two characters that drove me from the show. I came back in full for its last 2 years.

Their self-righteousness bothers me as well (as well as that of the Ryan clan); however, both of the things you mentioned were accidents - tragic accidents that, in one case, caused the death of someone; however, Delia PURPOSEFULLY TRIED TO RUN SOME DOWN WITH HER CAR!!! (Sorry for shouting) There is a major difference there. Negligence/booze/calculated, purposeful, attempted murder. Attempted murder! The fact that nothing happens to Delia for that...I just will never be able to get over that and I can't see how other people weren't as outraged by it. I'm absolutely loving Nancy Addison in this show. She's one of my very favorites. Jill, too. I had some issues with her during the KGJ affair but Nancy always finds a way to pull me back on to Jill's side. It's my understanding that she was a very well respected actress here in NYC. Her death was mourned by many in the NYC theater community. She only did one broadway show that I know of, but she must've done Off-Broadway or something because when I bring up her name, she is fondly remembered.

I so agree with you! Now that I'm re-watching a few of the soaps of my youth, as well as soaps I've never seen, they absolutely were more bold back then. If anyone watches soaps today, are there any thought-provoking storylines on American soaps? Didn't I read that there is a transgender character on B&B? Other than that, I don't hear anything or see headlines about soaps pushing boundaries these days. (Although I don't pay much attention. I know more of what's happening on Emmerdale and Neighbours than I do Days of Our Lives and General Hospital - and a friend of mine writes for that show. I'm a bad friend.)

I agree that Hensley got better over time - when I was watching in the aughts, I found him to be a quite competent actor in most storylines. However, I'm at 1988 and he ain't there yet! He's been on the show now for I think 3 1/2 years? The hubby and I have been remarking on his less than stellar acting "Ah, Holden, you're pretty but ya can't act your way out of a paper bag." was his passing comment the other day. Oh, speaking of which. I so need to go back and look at what day it was but there was a scene the other day with Emily and Holden in the shower. The scene ended with them obviously starting to have sex. When they came back to the scene, in a new "act" - after a commercial break, Holden was standing in the shower with a bit of a smile on his face. He started talking to Emily and left the shower. The camera stayed on the shower and, after a few seconds, EMILY POPPED UP INTO THE FRAME and responded to him!!!!! How on Earth did they get away with inferring oral sex during the 80's...in daytime...ON A P&G SHOW????!!!!!!! I laughed myself silly over that. Would love to know which one of them had the idea.

I think that would've been a great idea! It would've been different than the s/p storyline again. I *do* remember thinking Sharly was more interesting to watch rather than Sharlene (I felt the same about Rose/Lily on ATWT - Rose was far more interesting!) I was so enamored with John and Sharlene in high school/college though. I'd watch just about anything they were doing at that time, I think.

Totally agree with you in regards to Anna Stuart - she makes every scene shine that she's in. I can't take my eyes off of her!! I stopped watching the show long before they got rid of Iris, Bridget, etc. I wonder if I"ll last longer in my re-watch than I did on original viewing.....that's assuming of course that I can find the episodes on line. All of the SoapNet run is on YT, isn't it? I didn't watch it at the time - didn't have SoapNet - but didn't they show '87-'91? Sometimes, generic can be good - just about any viewer can graft themselves onto a generic storyline. I would disagree with you though about it feeling generic. Iris and Felicia were anything but generic characters. I know that she didn't create them but she wrote for them for years. In fact, she fleshed out Felicia and gave her a family which made her infinitely more interesting. I thought the original split personality storyline for Sharlene/Sharly was one of the greatest storylines on a soap opera ever. Especially because it went on for years at the start. Taylor, the psychiatrist, was one of the best villains in soap opera history. I, and my friends and family, tuned in EVERY DAY to see what crazy thing she would do next. The episodes in the fairground had us screaming at the television - we were all so into it. It wasn't until they brought back the split personality thing AGAIN when Sharlene came back with the entirely new personality (which I believe is what the video from '94 was) that I thought "Okay, we've been there, done that with this storyline now. It's just retreading the past."

Ryan's Hope Discussion Thread
^Yes, that's exactly what it is. Possibly the writers as well. There was a writers strike in 1981 where a lot of changes happened. The home video market changed everything and I'm sure that, if the writers negotiated a new agreement, the actors probably did as well. Even though I, myself, have been an actor for 25 years, I must admit that I don't know all the details of when we started getting paid for residuals. It couldn't have happened until 81/82 though, because nothing ever got rerun, other than prime time (or syndication) until the advent of cable TV. Then with the home video cassettes became popular and more film and tv episodes were being released in that way, it all went crazy! https://www.nytimes.com/1981/07/12/us/tentative-accord-reached-in-strike-of-screen-writers.html I still love Randall - it's just the character of Delia I can stand. I simply cannot buy that any member of the Ryan family would have anything to do with her at this point. I know Delia went to Maeve and begged her to let her stay in the house. I can understand Maeve acquiescing to her. What I can't understand is Barry not pressing charges or that anyone else (Jill, Faith, Johnny, and ESPECIALLY BARRY.) would even speak to her. Delia still owns the bar and you can't keep her out of it but she purposefully tried to murder someone. There's simply no coming back from that. But I still love RE as an actress.

Ryan's Hope Discussion Thread
This Friday's episode for me was 1490 above. There is a scene at 40 minutes (the video is Thurs & Fri together) where Jack confronts Delia about who gave her the money to start the Crystal Palace. I loved Randall in the scene and it made me think about what @amybrickwallace asked me when I was in the midst of my disgust with Delia for purposefully trying to run down Barry with her car. Amy asked me how I would've felt if IK were doing the storyline. Ever since then, I've been thinking about the difference between the two performances. Edited to say: Thinking back on that storyline of Delia/Barry/Car, I do think that if IK had been Delia at the time, I would've believed that the character would do something like that. I still wouldn't have liked it, but it wouldn't have seemed so out of left field as it did to me with RE. While I personally don't care for IK's acting, I understand and appreciate that she *is* Delia. Her version of Delia is obviously bi-polar or manic depressive or has some sort of serious psychological issue. Randall's was ditzier but also not so manic. In the scene I mentioned above, I was trying to picture IK doing the scene. It would've been slightly OTT, manic, and it would've been so OBVIOUS that she was lying. I prefer Randall's acting because, although both the audience and Jack can see that she's lying, it's subtle. You can see that she's trying to keep her cool but her face gives her away here and there. Anyway, I thought it good stuff and wanted to bring it up. David Rasche is also back as Wes Leonard - Rae trying to use him to make Michael jealous - and succeeding! I really love her acting as well. In the scene that is (I believe) before the Jack/Delia scene, Rae is with Wes at dinner; Michael comes to try and pull her away via work matters. Wes is talking to Michael and Rae is watching Wes. From the look on her face, I get that she likes Wes, doesn't find him attractive in the slightest, but he is playing his part exactly as she hoped he would. She appears both pleased and amused. Just little details that I love so much from many of these actors. I do wish we saw the Ryans more but, with Siobhan back, I'm hoping that changes. Right now, we just get a lot of Siobhan and Joe, which I also enjoy, and I understand they're re-establishing them on the canvas. When I think of the fact that, at the end of this year, the SoapNet run is over, I do get a little sad. I have quite enjoyed Ryan's Hope over the past 6 years!
