Ryan's Hope Discussion Thread
:-) I hope a lot exists on YouTube. I'm on my last year of the SoapNet run - 1981 Next year, I'll do more serious looking into what else exists on YT. I've seen that there's some; I just don't know if it's enough to piece together the story well.

Oh, IK - she certainly has her own acting style, doesn't she? I'm not very up on Loving as a soap although I certainly remember it being around and on in the background. Interesting to see Anthony Herrera playing a seeming version of James Stenbeck. And Bernard Barrow?! It's good to know that he had some work after Ryan's Hope. I thought Johnny Ryan was his only soap role.

I just watched the entire storyline last fall and I have to say that the Nicole reveal does not come out of nowhere. First of all, she is all over Jason in the weeks leading up to the murder. He terrorizes her over the fact that he killed their mother. Also, he had been attacking Cass, and Nicole had been begging Jason to leave Cass alone. I had watched the murder storyline as a kid and, during this re-watch, I thought to myself "How on earth did I, and other people, not see that Nicole killed him. It's clear as day!!" After the murder, she is always crying, and begging Cass to help Felicia so she doesn't go to jail. Her guilty feelings are just so obvious, it's ridiculous. It's like that movie The Sixth Sense - when you know the twist, it seems so obvious during a re-watch that you assume other people are going to figure it out immediately. The only thing was...the writers were holding out so many other attractive carrots - Iris, Vicky, Jake, John, Sharlene - that the audience was too busy being distracted to notice the way Nicole was behaving. It really holds up as one of the best murder mysteries ever done on a soap opera. The reveal is so brutal and the actors provide gut-wrenching work in the scenes where Cass confronts Nicole.

It's interesting to read everyone's reactions to Swajeski's time on the show. As I said, I grew up watching Another World 1987-1994(ish) My entire family watched the show, and then pretty much the entire theater department in college watched it once I got there and introduced them to it. We all LOVED it and were obsessed with it. It has clearly been a LONG time since the show aired and I'm only going off of my memories right now. As I'm only about 6 months into her time on my re-watch (June 1989), I've only really seen the re-introduction of Iris, the Jason Frame murder mystery, and now I'm slowly making my way through Mac's death. (It's difficult for me to get through as it is hitting me as much as when I was in high school. I can only cry so much before I take a few weeks off.) I'll be interested to see if my feelings for Swajeski's time remain as positive now. Many thanks to everyone who taped the Soapnet run and took the time to upload the episodes to the internet. It's wonderful to enjoy daily soap operas again!

Speak for yourself. I was one of the many people I knew who watched AW during Swajeski's time and LOVED the show. Exactly! I had no idea people didn't like Swajeski's tenure on AW until I came on this board. Everyone I know speaks of that time with glee, appreciation, and so much love.

Just got to Episode 1431 (I'm behind for the week. It's only Friday and I'm just now watching Monday's episode!) Siobhan has returned! I liked her immediately. From this one episode only, she seems to be a decent actress. She and Jack already look as if they want to rush into each other's arms. Also, Senaca is beginning to discover just how much of a liar and manipulator his little Kimberly is. Can't wait to see the Rae/Michael/Senaca/Kimberly fall out that is sure to come in time for sweeps month!

You're welcome. Now you know why many soap stars did so many commercials. Neither soap work NOR commercials is fantastic pay so you're always looking for more!

That was fun to watch - thanks for sharing! Now that I've seen that, I have a super vague memory of this show at the time. It makes me wonder if I caught any of it or tried it out. I usually tried to watch any new soap opera to see if I liked it. Also, of note, Tonio from ATWT is sitting right next to AB!

If only! Alas, for commercials, we actors get paid a lump sum for the commercial followed by a period of time when the commercial is in use (8 weeks/6 months/1 year) but after that....bupkis. It's usually a decent sum at the start though depending on the contract.

OMG - What is Frankie Frame doing on ATWT??? Hee Hee. Alice Barrett appeared in the 1/4/88 episode as Casey's cousin, Claudia! It's amusing me see all of these AW and ATWT actors just flit from show to show. Back in the day, P&G really liked to keep actors in house, didn't they?

Well, yay! The Ken George Jones mystery was tied up in time for Christmas. (Which I had feeling would happen.) It was obvious in the last two weeks that he had done it to himself but the fun was watching the rest of the cast have conversations about it all while Ryan is making paper dolls out of the suicide note! 1980 was an okay year for RH. I enjoyed the first half better, I'll admit. The KGJ/Barry Ryan stuff had me less interested, but Kimberly/Rae/Michael has kept things interesting. The Ryan's basically don't exist anymore now that the children are all gone or dead. LOL Although Siobhan is supposed to be back soon - was supposed to come for Christmas but got held up on her way by a pregnant friend....could this really just be herself? Has Siobhan gone and gone pregnant in the 9 months she's been away???

I got to Mac's death episodes last weekend. I hadn't seen them since original airing. On Sunday morning from 9 to noon, I cried. And cried. And cried. And cried. So many of those actors do such wonderful work. It must've been so difficult to relive it all, only as the characters this time. Although I have to say, it really distinguishes the quality actors from the pretty people. Some of them just can't pull it off. This weekend I'll keep going (or maybe not...it *is* Christmas) Coming up next is the funeral and the will reading. They had some good actors on that show, I'll say that.

Oh my Lord- thank you for posting that!! It's so frustrating trying to piece together what happens in-between the available episodes on YouTube. Although I have the 40th anniversary book with a detailed synopses, there's no particular order to each year in it. Weekly synopses from SOD will be a GIANT help in me keeping track as I go through the show!!!

Have you all ever done a YouTube rewatch and realized you don't remember most of what occurred? LOL If you follow my posts, you know I'm in 1989 right now (I watched the show originally from '87-'95ish) - just finished Jason Frame murder. Here are things I just have no memory of: Cafe Paradise (I *do* have vague memories of that set but not that it was an establishment run by Ada) The chef at Cafe Paradise (who is, apparently, involved with Ava) Derek/Abagail/Franny's preacher father - a MAJOR factor in the Who Killed Jason Frame Storyline Reuben - seriously, no memory Evan turning out to be Janice's son Iris and Michael having a past affair (does that get dropped and not mentioned ever again?) Seriously - how did I watch this show at not remember what are clearly very important details?? Anyone else have a rewatch and found yourself in a state of soap opera amnesia?

Thanks for sharing! I've never heard of the musical but it was great to watch the clips above. I recognized many of the performers from other shows I've seen them in. Seemed like a fun night at 54 Below! (Such a great space.)

IMDB - which is one of the only places I know that tends to have actual ages (I've known several actresses of a certain age who have complained to me that IMDB has their age wrong and did I know how to change that on there?) - anyway, IMDB lists her birth as 1960 which would make MUCH more sense. I mean, just watch her first episode of Ryan's Hope - that is not a 13 year old girl. That is a 17-18 year old girl. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0549526/ The whole "I lied about my age to the Ryan's Hope producers to get the part - I was 13" smacks of "I ran away from home and went to NYC at 13" which a personal actress friend of mine has been known to say on occasion when her age is mentioned.

WHAT?! LOL I'm watching Ryan's Hope right now for the first time. There is no way Kelli Maroney was 13 when she got cast on the show. She is in NO WAY that young. Who was she trying to fool? Sounds like an actress trying to retroactively make herself younger. I get it - I've worked in the entertainment industry for 25 years - the ageism is insane, especially for women. But, come 'on. 13??????? I cannot stop laughing at that!

Not only Senaca - but now Kimberly is egging on Elliot, the producer of her Broadway show. I seriously "tune in" these days to see what she's going to do next. She and Michael have become quite the pair of troublemakers. Poor Connie Markham never stood a chance! Rae had better watch out. Now that Michael is working for her, and bedding her, she's going to let her guard down and those two are gonna go after her...I just know it! Senaca....oof...mid-life crisis, for sure. I hope he divorces Kimberly before the little $h!t gets pregnant.

Okay - I'm further along in RH now - up to 1402. Re: my Delia freak out earlier.....I can see that they want to turn Delia back into the character she was before RE took over the role and I've accepted it. LOL Delia is back to wanting to be a part of the Ryan family. She's pining for Frank now - suddenly out of left field, after years of her being in therapy and working really REALLY hard to stop caring about being part of the Ryan family. She seemed to have gotten them out of her system, but clearly, it didn't work. I'm back to hating her. The thing is...I enjoy hating Kimberly more. Delia's regression makes her come across, to me, as super pathetic and sad. At least Kimberly is just a right out manipulative asshat!
