Yes, which he tried to frame Janine for (and Pat was on Janine's side through this, despite everyone else thinking it was her). What made no sense to me was why Ian/Pat allowed a 13 year old to go off to a strange country to be with the father who wanted nothing to do with him. It didn't seem in character for any of them, and Steven was only a kid,

Steven Beale is one of those soap characters that should have been an integral part of the show, but because of clueless soap producers/writers was not. Louise Berridge really screwed the character over, when she had an 13 year old Steven decide, after learning Ian wasn't his biological father, he wanted to leave Ian to live with the father he never knew in New Zealand (Simon). Seriously, how ridiculous was it that Ian allowed a 13 year old to do that? The character was written out for no apparent reason at all the the first time around. Then when Santer brought the character back, he totally raped him of any integrity and damaged him so bad that the character had to be written out. I wonder with Pat leaving soon if she'll mention Steven. I mean, he is her grandson.

Oooh, Matthew's revenge on Steve from 2000 is up. I always wondered why Matthew Robinson did the credits on the show the way he did by listing the writer and producer at the beginning of each episode, and the moving credits at the end. No other producer kept this format. Anyway, I always had a soft spot for the Matthew Rose character, and I thought this was a great one-off appearance to come back and get a quick revenge on Steve. Loved seeing hammy-ass Martin Kemp reduced to tears. Tom Hooper, who won the Best Director Oscar this year, directed this episode too. Teresa di Marco <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/cYOyR0a21tQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/52_HvOEf5Mo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/R36t2Z2yYXI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> I loved how Matthew just mindfucked Steve, it was such a cleaver means of getting back his "power."

Bianca will be back in time for Christmas and for Pat's death according to the original Daily Star article. I've heard that Sophie Lawrence has never wanted to return full-time as Diane, but who knows, maybe they can work on persuading her. I hope there's at least a mention of Sharon and Natalie. As Pat was very close to both of them at various points. Michael French is tricky, I've heard he and Lindsey Coulson had some big falling out...

OMG! Looks like Nick Berry might be returning as Simon! It might be just for Pat's exit only, but I'll take what I can get. There's also speculation that Michael French is returning as David! Great news! All I wish for now is Diane, Sharon, and Natalie making an appearance for Pat's send-off. That's probably doubtful though... http://www.thesun.co...EastEnders.html

Yeah, it seems like Pam asked to be killed off, as apparently, she was adamant about not ever coming back after she left to producers. I guess they figured they might as well since she wanted to move on.

I wonder if they'll bring anyone back for Pat's funeral. Simon, David, Diane, Sharon, and Natalie should be brought back for an appearance, but I doubt most of those actors would want to come back, if only for one episode.

Speaking of Pat, Susan Hill is saying on Twitter that she'll die on Christmas. http://twitter.com/#!/SuseHill/status/112657419796099072 God, I hope this isn't as bad as Pauline's Christmas murder a few years back... And I hope Janine isn't the one responsible for Pat's death...

It was briefly mentioned by Janine on Friday - Mandy used to babysit Janine for Frank and Pat when Mandy lived with them. Mandy's mother and Pat were close friends from Pat's hooker days.

Doing some catching up with some recent episodes. Janine has definitely become the best character on the show again, and probably the Kirkwood era's biggest success. After the awful and damaging material Santer gave her, I'm surprised at how much more complex and interesting the character is again. I'm enjoying Dot, Rose, and Cora too, all that is missing is poor Ethel. Don't really care about Tyler and Anthony... Mandy has made Ian somewhat fun again. She might be using him in the longrun, but I like the unlikely friendship they've struck up.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
The late 70's seemed to be a tumultuous time for the show. There was a constant succession of HW's between Robert Soderberg & Edith Sommer and the Dobson's, and of course the show had fallen from first in the ratings to 4th place in 1979. One of the soap books, I forgot which, said the Dobson's were specifically brought in for "emergency surgery" in late 1979. The revamped the hell out of the show and modernized it, but a lot of what is written at that time gave them credit for helping to stabilize the show. I don't know how much better they were than what came before, but clearly the show needed some change by '79. I bet even the show's "lull periods" in the 70's is better than anything out there now...

Wasn't Irna fired because she wanted Bob to leave a pregnant Jennifer for an also pregnant Kim? Apparently, the audience reacted negatively to this as they thought Kim should be punished for sleeping with her sister's husband, thus Kim had a stillbirth, or so they thought... I know it's generally considered an uneven decade for the show, but I'm most intrigued by 70's ATWT. The show was clearly trying to merge its roots and keep up with the times during this era. It may not always have worked, but on paper at least, a lot of the stories seem compulsively watchable.

I don't necessarily want her back, but I think they could recast the role if need be. They'll never do it though, as the Kat/Zoe reveal is so iconic now and was the show's defining moment in the 00's. but that moment was all Zoe ever really had in her. She's one character that had a lot of airtime, but was useless for most of it.

I have to say, Britney looked like she'd rather be somewhere else and not accepting that award. What can you say about Stefani? The girl tries way too hard, and it's all been backfiring on her overhyped ass lately. And Madonna already did the arrogantly upstaging the Video Vanguard recipient 22 years ago, and much better might I add. <iframe width="420" height="345" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/jaZVQyTOBns" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
