Exactly how does one figure that out. So far the relief checks have gone based on 2019 tax returns which has left out a heck of a lotta people who are not working still who were laid off in 2020.  My feeling has always been this is not hard to do. Send payments to everyone and reconcile at tax time. How is it I can figure this out but hundreds of people in congress can't. Or honestly don't want to.

Whatever the initial threshold number this issue remains, which is why I'm for lowering it. They aren't going to give it to everyone. The optics of that would be a killer. At the same time, it's far from a hill I would die on. I'd rather see lower income people get it than get stuck on a cut off number. I would say that if people were making $300,000 in 2019 and now need a $1,400 stimulus check, they are poor money managers though.

And yes, I've seen the idea of figuring it all out at tax time in the press. I wouldn't argue with that because we all know people who don't have the sense to save no matter how much they make, but like I said that would be an impossible sell, imo.

  2. Biden can just do things like send out the $1,400 checks by executive order right?

I have to agree that the income thresholds should be up for negotiation. Upper middle class people do not need $1,400. Giving that kind of money to families with incomes of $300,000 is not going to stimulate anything except maybe the stock market.

You're referring to Nancy Pelosi as Speaker and Patrick Leahy as President Pro Temp of the Senate ...

But I'm not following your train of thought regarding Biden and Harris. What do you mean?

I meant I'm worried there will be an assassination attempt.

In a way, it doesn't matter to me whether Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are able to keep all their promises that they made to voters during the campaign.  I'm just happy to have decency and dignity back in the WH.  We need those things (and more!) now more than ever.

Me either. I've come to see campaign "promises" as simply a vision of what the candidates would like to do, if possible.  What a relief to have people in office who aren't going to lie every time they open their mouths.

Why is anyone surprised? She's always been like him. I have friends who knew her pre-Donald in New York; they aren't kind.

I'm a little surprised she's like him. I figured she was more apathetic than cruel.  I wasn't surprised she was an awful first lady though. She never wanted to be in public service.  What a wasted opportunity.

Does anyone know who will be the next President Pro Temp of the Senate? I can't help but wonder given how insane things are.

Let's see Kellyanne "alternative facts" her way out of that!

I hate to say it but that doesn't even rate as anything close to serious child abuse to me. What can I say? I've gone through some real [!@#$%^&*]. Plus I've seen so much worse happen to other kids. Yeah, it's not good, but that was a fairly typical teenager/mother fight, imo. I couldn't hear everything she said though. Saying "I want you out of here" was over the line I guess.

  7. The fact that there is a suspected 5th column in the National Guard is terrifying. Neutralizing all of these delusional people is going to be one hell of a job.

    And you posted it anyway.

As deadly as this attack was to our democracy, at the same time, a lot of the footage that people took of others just roaming around the halls looks like the stupidest, most ill-organized parent-teacher night ever.

I love watching this people get arrested. Throw the book at them hard.

Unfortunately, in this ever-changing world in which we're living, as soon as we exalt individuals like Daniel Hodges to hero status, we find ways to tear them down.  I'm sure it won't be too long before we find out something really salacious about him -- like, he likes to beat the hell out of women while high on crank at illegal cock-fighting matches, or something.

🤣 I really hope not, but I feel like nothing can shock me at this point.

Except these aren't people who are arguing in good faith. If they got $2,000 they'd demand three. Give them three and they'll demand that there be retroactive payments. The goalposts always move because the whole brand of the left is that nothing is ever good enough. If they want it to be another $2,000 then write a bill for $2,000. It's not up to Joe Biden, it's up to Congress. Biden put forth his plan but Congress actually has to write and pass the legislation.

What's really pissing me off is that these are people who are always talking about how they want to help the poor and working class but they've completely ignored everything in the plan that does that like the increase in unemployment insurance, eviction/foreclosure moratorium, increase in the EITC, funding for schools so that people can send their kids back safely, increase in SNAP, etc... all because they want to be performative on Twitter.

The eviction moratorium going until September and the increase in SNAP are really great. Those huge car lines for food banks are heartbreaking. So many people are going to be saved from homelessness and hunger because of this. Not to mention the mental trauma that people, (especially children) would have experienced.

  10. I was saddened to see that the maximum penalty for insurrection is 10 years. Hopeful most of these people will be charged with felony murder and every other thing they can be slapped with. I guess I must be 1% Republican because I was rooting for life in prison if not the death penalty.

  11. This is the kind of thing that makes me wonder if everyone who is or ever was in government is just a bought out whore. Barbara Boxer using the old "I can change things from the inside" lie, while worker for a Chinese company that surveils the Uighur.

    • The state-owned China Electronics Technology Group is Hikvision's controlling stakeholder. Hikvision cameras have been installed at internment camps in Xinjiang, where more than 1 million Uighurs are estimated to have been imprisoned or subjected to forced labor.
    • Biden’s presidential campaign described China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims as “genocide” last year and said he "stands against it in the strongest terms."

Not just forced labor, but also forced abortion and sterilization. Really, she couldn't find any other way to make money? Or maybe just consider that its ok not to be rich, no matter what society tells us. Money is not worth getting involved with genocide on any level.

If they willfully ignore the safety detectors and are arrogant enough to march through anyway, I think they should be tasered, detained and searched.

If they are going to whine and blubber, give them something to cry about.

I am out of patience with these repugnant Republicans.

Same.  They supposedly want unity, but they won't comply by the rules a few days after a major attack. I can almost hear them screaming, but muh guns! You can't take away muh guns! What about muh freedom?!

Oh helllll no at Yoo trying to launder his sullied name and reputation on the back of this! Are people really trying to give GOP operatives credit/cover for doing the most basic?

And Pence asked if he could disrupt the election! Because he was told he couldn't and listened, he's the man of the hour? Screw that. He would have subverted democracy if Yoo or his ike said it was possible.

I have to admit to being conflicted about these reports. For years we've watched cops gun down and torment Black people without hearing about them feeling "a sense of failure." On the contrary, they practically take a victory lap. So why the different reaction here?

I'm not claiming to know but I think it bears some examination. Was it because these people all claimed to "back the blue?"

I think trying to defend against the coup was probably horribly traumatic for some of these officers. Some of these people are loyal to the country and likely felt they failed in stopping the break in of our capitol building. Imagine trying to beat back these nuts while some of your fellow officers are taking selfies with the enemy. Plus they are under a lot of criticism for not being more effective. It seems like a really different job than being a beat cop, not that I really know that. It's just my impression.

If these SOB's go through with their plans to attack again they need to be met with riot gear and bullets AFAIAC.
