  1. After the summer of 1982 with the terrible Republic of Eden storyline, I absolutely loved the Nora Fulton murder mystery. It was classic Edge. And it was relatively short. Nora was strangled in early January and the killer was revealed four months later.
  2. I agree with j swift that Sheldon didn't change the characters that much, though I did have issues with the way Sheldon wrote Miles in the summer of 1983. I remember being surprised at how quickly Miles ended up in bed with Chris. It seemed very out of character to me for Miles to hook up with Chris so soon after Nicole's death.
  3. The episode Carl posted is actually Lee Sheldon's first credited episode. The reveal of Nora's murderer happened on Slesar's last episode on May 20, 1983. Sheldon took care of the dangling plot threads during his first few episodes and immediately started setting up his own characters and stories, with Chris Egan debuting during this first week. I recall watching this episode live on WABC New York and immediately knowing something had shifted in the writing.
  4. According to Colby Muhammad’s website, where she mentions her new role, Beyond the Gates is airing in January.
  5. Will Jeffries, indeed, was created by Anderson and Manetta. He showed up around June 1987. Sonni first showed up around that October during Pamela Long's stint. Harley also arrived in October.
  6. Lauren Mayhew was the other actress to portray Marah. I recall seeing her name in the credits of a 9-1-1 episode.
  7. Peter Haskell was already portraying the role of Lloyd Kendall on Search for Tomorrow when Tom O'Rourke was fired from Guiding Light. Haskell joined Search around June 1983. An age-appropriate role on another P&G show during that time is Carl Hutchins on Another World. Another possibility is Raymond Speer on As the World Turns, a role that went to Donald May.
  8. There were several abrupt shifts during those months. Amanda's sudden departure in August. Justin and Helena departing for Arizona in September. Hope's departure in November/December. I especially found Justin's departure head-scratching. Six years of careful plotting with the saga of Phillip's paternity was wrapped up so abruptly when Bradley (who had been on the show for only a few months) revealed the truth. And then weeks later, Justin suddenly leaves Springfield, depriving the viewers of the fallout from the revelation. I had only been watching Guiding Light for 18 months at that point, but I remember being utterly disappointed by the changes.
  9. I'm not sure how accurate this is, but in a recent thread on another site, someone said that Bernau decided not to renew his contract, which led to the creation of Alexandra. I know that the 1984 rewrite that Brandon Spaulding was still alive was very unpopular, but I do wonder how the story would have played out if Bernau had still been around as Alan.
  10. Amanda was abruptly written out around August 1983. As Mitch said, her exit was very weird as Long and Culliton had been building up the character after their material started airing in May 1983. I think she was raising her half-brother Matthew and had hired a nanny named Jane Hogan (played by Mary Pat Gleason, another transplant from Texas). Beverlee arrived as Alex around February 1984 and Alan disappeared into the jungles of San Rios around May 1984.
  11. Was thinking the same thing. Plus, The Young and the Restless was renewed in February of this year for another four seasons.
  12. Jeff Ryder was head writer when Bert died.
  13. Sarah appeared at the 1999 wedding. Reva hears Sarah’s voice then looks up and sees Sarah standing on a balcony.
  14. Yes, there was a third serial killer. I think his name was Andrew Miller and he was pulling the plug on people on life support at the hospital. Bridget was one of his victims. That was a Tom King/Craig Carlson plot and ended around March 1996. The second serial killer storyline that year started a month later. Apparently, King and Carlson started that story and Margaret DePriest continued it.
  15. I always thought it would have been cool if GL has cast Frank Beaty as Rick rather than bringing back O’Leary. Beaty was a powerful and charismatic actor who could have made Rick a leading man rather than the supporting character Rick was with O’Leary in the role.
  16. Lainie Bauer was the mother of Johnny and the dreaded, short-lived Lacey. She was portrayed by Teri Keane.
  17. I'm intrigued by what I read about the plans, especially Sara and Betty. I love that Betty's husband is a retired senator and the fact that the show is set in the D.C. area. The first thing that popped into my mind was whether we might be looking at a January 6, 2025 debut. And, if so, whether there could be a tie-in to the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
  18. The final episode is available online. This is the scene where Liza meets the Travis lookalike in the airport.
  19. When did Rod Arrants return? I know Liza encountered a Travis lookalike in the Henderson airport in the final episode, but the character (Sam Ratcliffe) wasn't played by Rod. Did Rod return at another time?
  20. As a student, staff member, and faculty member at Rutgers University, I can't tell you how many times I walked through the gates that are featured in the opening credits for The Brighter Day. The gate was erected in 1901. The building in the background, which houses the university president, dates back to 1825.
  21. I have a hard buying that Capitol was a placeholder until Bell had a second soap ready. What would be the point of going to the expense and trouble of launching a new soap only to scrap it when Bell had a new soap ready to premiere? What we do know from media reports at that time is CBS was considering at least four new soaps in the early 80s. Two were replacements for Search for Tomorrow: Capitol and Beverly Hills. I believe Judith Krantz was the creator of Beverly Hills. I clearly remember my local newspaper mentioning Beverly Hills in a December 1981 article announcing the cancellation of Search and the debut of Capitol. I was disappointed by the decision as Beverly Hills seemed more intriguing to me. Then in 1983-1984, there were many media stories about two new Paul Rauch soaps in development at CBS: I believe that The Barons/The Billionaires and Starcrossed/Grosse Pointe were the proposed titles. Soap Opera Digest reported that those soaps were being planned for a September 1983 launch at one point. And I believe they were slated to air in the late morning. A February 1984 article I read online stated that novelist Fred Mustard Stewart and Barbara Bauer were the head writers for those proposed soaps. CBS was clearly interested in developing new soaps in the early 1980s that had nothing to do with Bell. And I believe that I read that The Bold and the Beautiful wasn't a shoo-in to replace Capitol as CBS was also considering Claire Labine's Celebration, set on a horse farm in Kentucky, as a replacement.
  22. It's not a matter of ego at all, which is frankly insulting to Ariana who is graciously sharing this amazing footage with us. Ariana posted weeks ago that her mother was her biggest fan and that her mother recorded all of her scenes. She also shared that most of the tapes were destroyed by mold after her parents' basement flooded. What we're seeing are scenes from tapes that were stored in the parents' linen closet.
  23. There's so much talk about the show becoming Reva-centric, but I always felt that Guiding Light became Reva- and Beth-centric during those years. The never-ending focus on those two characters caused me to lose interest in the show and prompted me to give Santa Barbara a chance.
  24. I'm not sure which remote you're referring to, but I'm pretty sure Quinlan started adding remotes sometime in the summer of 1979. There was a remote involving a dying Sara Dancy Powers in a park. And then Steve and Carolee were seen walking to a helicopter during the tornado that ravaged Madison that fall.
  25. It lasted about 6 months to a year. I recall one of the characters was named Francesca. I believe she was the femme fatale. Plus there was a Black couple -- Jamie and Julia Scott, I believe. I think he was a cop and she was a nurse. I was always amused by that couple's names as The Edge of Night had infants at that time named Jamey Swift and Julia Scott.
