P&G never truly thought much of these shows to begin with, other than the fact that they were "cash cows" in their heydays. The daytime soap was created specific to "sell soap" literally and it was all about turning a profit, the entertainment was secondary to the $$$. It was also a genre that was started by a women, Irna Phillips, that largely appealed to women, who made up the bulk of the viewing audience, while the large majority of the executives were men who did not much value "women's work" and any field that was seen to be dominated by women (even though, in reality most of the headwriters tend to be men). Want to know why teachers have the lowest average salaries of the majority of the industries around? How about nurse's salaries compared to Wall Street? Which of these careers do the most vital work? Industries that are seen as attracting and/or catering to women usually command the lowest regard. This is a very sad fact. The soap industry is no different. Production companies like P&G barely valued soaps when they were raking in the money (e.g. 'wiping' of classic episodes, Eileen Fulton also once mentioned P&G's seeming reluctance to market the show even at the height of its popularity), let alone once ratings began to steadily decline in the 90s. It's about placing value on what you have and doing what you can to preserve it. If P&G never put much value on these shows, why do believe believe that they'd do what they could to preserve them? One can only hope that somewhere, someday, there will be an employee who rises in the ranks at P&G who grew up watching and valuing these soaps and decides that the company has wasted a big opportunity to connect with fans of these shows and decides to amend this. Just to add a bit more, To add to this P&G was different from other producers of soaps, in that they were also a corporation that sold consumer goods and would be listed on the Stock Market, with a board of directors and investors to please and all the restrictions and limitations to go with it. Unlike the other producers of soap operas, P&G was not specifically an entertainment company either, their bread and butter was consumer goods, so its possible that other entertainment based production companies (e.g. Bill Bell Productions, etc.) had a bit more creativity and flexibility while P&G was a bit more rigid in how they financed their productions. P&G was the first but you cannot tell me that Bill Bell Sr. and Agnes Nixon, having once worked under P&G, didn't take notes and figure out what they wanted to emulate as well as how they wanted their shows' business to be conducted in a drastically different way than from what P&G did.

Even Federer struggled yesterday though. Both courts in Montreal and Toronto are too f*%^&-ing slow!! When Caroline Wozniacki's coach and Dad claim that the court is slow, you know it's too f*%^&-ing slow!!! Speed it the hell up! How are Toronto/Montreal's tournament supposed to be good preparation for the U.S. Open when we know that the U.S. Open courts will be faster than this? The irony is that Nolé and Andy probably would've thrived on these slow-as-molasses courts.

These folks just need to go on ahead and drink the Kool-Aid so that the rest of us can salvage what we can and get a fresh start.

I just saw pictures of an inflatable chicken that bore a resemblance to Trump online. How did someone get it behind the White House? It does fit in with the state of this presidency though.

@Soaplovers I thought about Grant too and he likely could've worked but it seemed as thought with each visit, the writers made the character looked more dubious. Also, if he and Lisa didn't get together the other many times he visited in the past, though Grant remained single all those years (and Lisa a few of them), I didn't see the writers committing to writing them as endgame. Sadly, the writers didn't care either way about one of their longest running characters and what many consider daytime TV's first vixen.

I'd thought of that too! Especially since Lisa was really the 'lost Hughes wife' with her tight connection to Penny Hughes and her complicated, yet loyal relationship with Bob and Kim. The one "wrinkle" in that plan is that the last actor to play Don died in '09 (I believe), so they would've had to do a recast. Perhaps if there were another actor to have played Don previously and who was still alive in 2010, you may have still been able to pull it off but the actor who played Don in the 80s when he returned for various family gatherings had a good combative chemistry with Eileen Fulton's Lisa, so a romance between those two would've have been very interesting-- almost on the level of a John and Lucinda. I too think that Lisa, who was the endless romantic of the show, should've been afforded the opportunity to have a romantic ending with another love and a Hughes man would've been perfect.

@Nothin'ButAttitude In those final years, the show messed up many obvious stories they could have written based on the serial's history. Lyla should've been brought back after Brad's death. Who would've understood better than Lyla what it's like to lose your husband while caring for a very young child??? Katie could've have begun to lose herself in her work to numb the pain of loss, then it dawns on her that this must've been exactly what her Mother did for years and Katie begins to understand Lyla in a way that she didn't as a child and starts to lose the resentment she had toward Lyla for the feeling of coming in second to her Mother's career. That would've been an opportunity to repair the damage that was done in the 'butcher-backstory' that was written for Lyla character when adult Katie first returned to Oakdale. That was such an obvious story but I guess that would've required too much effort on the part of the writing team.

@Nothin'ButAttitude LOL, I was one of those folks who suggested Hunt Block play Rick Ryan, then the smarmy attitude would've worked but ATWT wasn't about making much sense by then! Lots of people couldn't have cared less about the Janet and Dusty pairing. Lots of people were "meh" about Katie and Chris as well. I know some (the few who still watched) were indifferent about the fact that Lily and Holden were likely to remain apart, either because they'd felt the pairing had ultimately run its course or because they didn't see much chemistry between Noelle Beck and Jon Hensley. This is probably why the show felt so compelled to bring back John Dixon for a limited run to reunite with Lucinda, because at least they were a pairing that people had felt strongly about at one time.
