  1. Yeah, I can't muster any sympathy either. The one thought that I keep having is that agribusiness is likely to snap up those plots of land like customers at a fire sale so that they can have even more crops to spray with toxic pesticides before they send them the produce to market. Also, I find it very interesting that Russia's agricultural industry is benefiting at the exact same time that the U.S. is in trouble. The causation factor is definitely a part of this. The emphasis has been on the mining industry and the agricultural sector with nary a thought about how retail is bleeding out, along with the hundreds of thousands of jobs with it.
  2. That NYTimes obit seemed to put Lee Radziwill in her sister's shadow...again. She outlived Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis by over 20 years and The New York Times couldn't find anything that belonged to Lee alone that they could expand upon? These was not a very good, nor respectful obituary, imo. The one thing that interested me was that picture of her and Farley Granger that was in the article.
  3. #MarALardass is trending on Twitter!
  4. I'm so happy for Monfils. Good match, great play and the speeches, which I usually ignore seemed genuine. Stan had a pretty good week too.
  5. I had no idea that Jo has sickle cell anemia.
  6. No city or town should be allowed to keep the terms undisclosed when it comes to the people's business. Too many people think that desperation is a justified reason to let Amazon have its own way. Chicago is a major city, it's not Detroit (which Amazon had no intention of even considering on a serious level), why should they bend over backwards to be spanked by Amazon? Amazon's claim to want to "invest" in these communities is highly suspect. And corporate incentives rarely yield the benefits that they promise to the cities and town. Cities and towns are already starved for tax revenue and the GOP tax "reform" has exacerbated the situation. Whatever "loss" NYC is suffering is political clout.
  7. Yeah, I try not to directly respond to anything that particular poster puts on the boards but I guess it can be regarded as an indirect response. Sometimes the temptation is a lot but I'll have to keep in mind what you said.
  8. Every city should start saying no to these demands for these outrageous incentives. Amazon paid no federal taxes for the last two years and yet they feel entitled to $3BN worth of incentives, while they'd do nothing to alleviate the huge affordable housing crisis that NYC already has. Just say no. Even Mike Bloomberg thought it wasn't right for NYC and few politicians love catering to the wealthy as much as he does! Someone subtweeted that Trump's hair must have also taken the day off.
  9. I agree and have always wondered why there hadn't been more of an acknowledgement, at the very least by P&G and CBS about this. Having said that, I don't even understand why people are comparing three wholly unique characters who were each portrayed by gifted actresses (all in their own right). They all needed better recognition, in a way each one was undervalued but yes, I agree that Lisa the original daytime vixen and should've been better acknowledged as such. Perhaps if P&G had done a better job of promoting their talent, the way that other soaps had done (Susan Lucci, Deidre Hall, Erika Slezak, etc.) there might have been greater recognition. Kim Zimmer had some recognition, especially after she won the Emmy but it feels as if she is more of an exception to the P&G rule.
  10. So The New York Times has to admit that Trump's national emergency declaration is unlike any of his predecessors, no matter what he claims. For one, none of the other presidents used a national emergency declaration to thwart Congress on something Congress already rejected. Trump did. That is a fundamental difference. Presidents Have Declared Dozens of Emergencies, but None Like Trump’s
  11. I saw on the news, the news from Japan, that is...that consumer spending is down, not the hallmark of a healthy economy.
  12. Aww, stop. Of course you're worthy @vetsoapfan. You know so much about soap history and I enjoy reading your posts! I haven't seen that interview and now part of me is curious to see it. The other part of me suspects that watching it may make me angry. Is it on YouTube?
  13. Well, I can tell you that there are quite a few very good, even great movies that I have yet to see. Some of which, I don't have any immediate plans to see because quite simply, they depress me. Don't feel obligated to see/do anything if you feel that you're going to leave feeling worse for it. Unless you're a film critic and it's your job. Otherwise, I'd say, don't worry about it. Ryan gave a very effective performance and had really good chemistry with Garcia but if marital discord and addiction are not your bag, it's okay to skip. @vetsoapfan The post that you made in the Guiding Light thread about Goutman not pre-taping with Helen Wagner while he had the chance is an important one and really worthy of discussion in this thread too, so I hope you don't mind I put a link to your original post here. https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/32166-guiding-light-discussion-thread/?do=findComment&comment=1604864 Here's your quote-- "I don't have any sympathy for Goutman. In an interview once, he said that when the actress' health was waning, he could have pre-taped some scenes with Helen Wagner, to insure that ATWT had some Nancy Hughes material "in the bank" for the end of the series, but he never did. Idiotic, careless decision. Viewers would have LOVED to see new clips with Wagner on the show's last broadcast, particularly with Nancy Hughes saying, "Good night, dear." I never personally cared for Lily Walsh, but Martha Byrne owned that role. Knowing that Noelle Beck generously offered to step aside at the end, and let Byrne reprise the part, but that Goutman did not make/allow that to happen, was also egregious. Viewers who were invested in Lily and Holden deserved an emotionally-gratifying conclusion to their journey, with MB and JH reunited. Plus, Goutman literally had YEARS to reverse the blatant marginalization, underuse, and disgusting disrespect shown to Eileen Fulton, but never did. That's the thing I could never understand when people make excuses for Goutman. Wagner was already a nonagenarian (9th decade of live) before she died at 91. Did he believe Wagner would live forever??? What about when she turned 88, 89...90? Why not do one scene here and there and store it in the vault, just in case? With really esteemed figures the New York Times actually does video obituaries where they interview the person, while they're still alive (they did it with former NYC mayor Edward I. Koch) so that the person can speak of their legacy in their own words. It would've been entirely possible to store some scenes done here and there once she hit her mid-late 80s. Like @vetsoapfan and some of us have been saying, a simple "Good night dear" even done in Voice Over wouldn't have been so hard. Goutman just didn't have the will or vision for it since he was all about diminishing the most senior veterans on the show.
  14. The last time I watched him play, I couldn't put my finger on why I didn't enjoy his matches more. Perhaps that's it. Anna's clearly shooting her shot!
  15. Ryan was very good in When A Man Loves A Woman, I thought. She likely had a lot to draw on from her marriage with Dennis Quaid. If anything, that interview made me want to see In The Cut to see what all the controversy was about. I really liked The Piano, which was the second feature-length film that Jane Campion directed, so maybe In The Cut is something that might interest me.
  16. I just read the interview, which wasn't bad overall but it probably won't change anyone's opinions of Ryan, whether positive or negative. There were a couple quotes that stood out to me though. Interesting to hear how she saw herself while she was in the midst of Hollywood fame. "I have so much admiration for actors who have incredible imagination for life or have life experience that they can then bring to the audience. I don’t think I was one of those people. I felt like an unformed person." "I had a very neutered image."
  17. I posted this in the Where Are They Now thread but ICYMI. Despite the fact that some people can't stand her, she is an alumna of the show. Also, I haven't yet read this interview so I don't really know what's in it yet, although I plan to read.
  18. I have yet to read this but Meg Ryan (Betsy Stewart, ATWT) did an interview with NYT Magazine.
  19. Frances must have gotten a good appearance fee as he originally had no intention of playing the New York Open but was a last minute wildcard. He needs to defend his Daytona title because clearly that's where his mind was. From what I saw, he played poorly and his focus was not on that match.
  20. Spineless supporting the feckless.
  21. Maybe she's trying to follow the Kournikova path and make Ben Rothenberg's Top 10 list of most important WTA tennis players.
