Mysteriously dropped Storylines
Also on Y&R Matt and Brock were being linked with something happening in Rio or some place I can't remember and Matt having audio flashbacks of a plane crashing and it was all dropped. Brock kept saying he knew Matt and Matt denied it and one day it was just dropped

I never liked Jack as being in Vietnam, just doesn't gel with his character. I could see John enlisted, would explain why Dina left town. Being with a military man might have been too much for her. Though getting rid of the back story entirely and having Luan get pregnant by John and sent away by her family out of shame as she got pregnant out of wedlock would have worked better. Maybe the migrated from Vietnam early. I know most people fled closer to 1975 and later Yeah I think Keemo and Jack as siblings would have worked better, while Luan and John and Jill would have been far better. Keeping Mamie from being humiliated and sent packing. She could have still seen her role in the house diminished allowing Dru and Liv to set her up with various men to help her move on, those dates could be disasterous, until she finally found her rich man who whisked her away (if they really needed to send her off). Luan would have had to be more firey and a match for Jill though. Mai is older and with the frat pack and Keemo and Jack are fighting it out over Mari-Jo, who is pitting them against each other for her own amusement. I do think Jack did better with women who were trouble. I think also having Luan's restaurant take off and attract some shady business men would have been a great story for her and John. Especially if they kidnapped her just as she and John were to be married, maybe even on the day of. And you could have still thrown Dina in as a roadbloack at some point too. Or maybe Mai and Luan could have played out Mildred Pierce, haha. Might have been good too. I think also moving Jill on from the Abbotts and ending the divorce and custody battle sooner would have helped her immensely. She could still be at odds with Victor over other things, thus setting up his shooting and her taking the fall. But she is with John Silva during this time a sort of redux of Michael Crawford and this gives John custody of Billy and eventually he and Luan move to New York. Thus allowing her return in 1999. There was a wealth of opportunity for them to be honest.

That's a solid place actually. Summer Solstice, haha. I agree with that I was thinking about it. Wouldn't it have been better if Mai was older and replaced Amy in the Sharon/Nick/Matt story and linked Luan (who I think should have been with John) into the Newman story and thus Jack and Keemo as well. Keemo already hates his half brother Jack because Luan (instead of Mamie) tells everyone she and John were lovers after his stroke and no one believes her, and now Mai has a nervous breakdown and goes missing. Pulling them all in to the one story while also giving them their own stuff to deal with. Adding more tension to the Jack/Keemo/Mari-Jo story which should have been the triangle that was a main focus

This along with a few other stories is why I draw a line at May 94 for the golden age. Not sure what happened, but more and more I just wasn't liking the story direction on the show, but still like it through to about 01/02. I still collect episodes from 94 - 02 but don't even bother with what I called previously the bronze age, even though I watched sporadically through to about 2006

Thanks for the uploads very appreciated The 1984 upload is a mix of mostly Jill/Kay scenes starting from Christmas 1984 (has Newmans and Williams too), The Winter Cabin Memories from Jan 1985 where Kay almost shows John and Jill pictures but Jill barfs on the rug, Brent telling Ashley he is her father, Dina shooting Kay (she was trying to shoot Brent), Jill visiting Kay in hospital to call her bluff about the shooting and the Memorial Day episode 1985 all up 49min. The 1988 episode is September 27, 1988, which we have The 1992 episodes are Jun 7 & Jun 8, 1994 and have been uploaded before The first 1994 ep (Unsure 1994) March 31, 1994 and it is new. Next 1994 episode (Unsure-1) is most likely August 02, 1994 The fourth 1994 upload (Unsure-3) follows on, so while I haven't confirmed since scenes were repeated this would more than likely be August 03, 1994 Third random 1994 ep (unsure-2) is Aug 24, 1994

Look into the past - 1975
He never had a lover. Closest was Julia and even that went nowhere. She didn't end up having an affair until just after Brock left and Michael stepped in, so I do wonder if Bell had finally planned to get Brock laid Yeah he and Lorie slept together in Europe, but that was before they both came on the show. She tried multiple times to get him back in the sack, but he had found his calling and preferred to sing to the patrons of Allegro than get laid. With Ron, yeah it is the smaller details that really make me shiver a bit. There is one scene where Peggy is trying to remember the man's face and I think at the same time Ron has a flashback to the rape which finally reveals to the audience he did it just as Peggy is also sure it was Ron. Up to that point you couldn't be sure. Everything you mention and that smile (described by SOD) is just dark af. The scariness of the reality I'd say the psycho or sociopath stuff is more what he does to Nancy as we go along. It is pretty horrible and even worse the ending to this story

What's up with Lorie? Vanessa calls her a tramp than asks her to the house and she's like "Maybe Vanessa wants to be friends" lol This would happen a few times Vanessa sure isn't wasting time telling Lorie to gtfo of Lance's life. I can't with Brad. Don't like this story. I am glad Leslie finally tells him she's outgrown him. He's such a sap The Becker storyline is chilling. The synopsis in SOD also mentions when Ron is acquitted a smile slowly forms across his face and he says "how about that" I guess we could see him as Y&R's first psycho or at least an early version, considering what he does to Nancy. Poor Nancy. Would love to see Trish Stewart playing this whole story out. So the Derek Thurston story is dead and Jill and Kay have little to do. Apparently someone didn't like the story and it was dropped, I guess that is why someone doesn't have much to do right now Awww Brock, how many women did he ask to marry him. Why did Bell always have Brock kiss women and tell them he would be happy to be their love, and they're like, you're really more of a friend, like a big sister

Hey all Updated the blog with July soap news and synopsis. Some interesting talk about ratings from both JMR and Lynda Hirsch. ABC faultering and CBS gaining. JMR talks about the debut of Loving. An interview with Beth Maitland, and he (JMR) can't understand why residents of Genoa City take a full week to make a Trans-Atlantic flight.

Thanks for that. Very interesting to see the top 10 are mostly Abbott's. I would even include Brad as an Abbott sort of. Also I notice in the monthly charts the top 13 were always appearing the most and it seems to show here too, since they are the ones with 100 plus appearances. I guess Jeanne would have been in that 100+ section too if not for her absences. Also from what we know of the first few episodes from Jan 86 that are missing. It seems to have been Lauren, Paul, Andy, Faren, Kay, Jack, Jill, Michael, Lindsey, Esther, John, Grant, Shawn, Traci, Brad and Danny for most of that week. I think Ash, Victor, Nikki only appeared once or twice during that time.

I was doing it here, as I have most of the 90's SOD's (many got ruined by rats) I started uploading the entire magazine from 1991, but life has gotten in the way. It takes a lot to scan those magazines. I will be getting back to it though eventually. Not sure there is anywhere else that has them

Hi all So I have started putting up the Jon-Michael Reed synopsis from Mar 21 1983 onwards. Just to make it easier I have tagged them as jmrrecaps1983. This tag will show only Jon-Michael Reed's recaps starting Mar 21, 1983. For those that only want to see them. Then if you want, just go to the URL and type /chrono and you can have them in order

All good. Glad to share what I have access to, so that we all have it. I am just going to keep it going. Hopefully just get through the entirety of the 70's, 80's and 90's at some point. Not too interested in soaps post 2002, so won't be much from that point on. If I ever find any decent stuff from the 60's I will post that as well in the future.

@BoldRestless Haha yeah Doug seems like a jokester. So I have started adding to the tumblr blog. But I started with Sep 82 and am currently up to Jan 83. I have added all the columns from Jon-Michael Reed that I could find and also Lynda Hirsch. As well as recaps from both. Not to worry I will get to the post March stuff very soon, as in tonight or tomorrow. Just be aware if reading Lynda's recaps I am pretty sure they go from Wed-Tue or Thu-Wed. They are definitely not Mon-Fri. However there are some plot points JMR doesn't mention, so they are worth the read. It was a lot tougher finding JMR's columns than I thought it would be. Both Lynda and Jon are syndicated and many papers picked up and dropped their columns without notice. They would often be edited down or merged and sometimes just not appear or they would run columns that were a month old. I did my best to find the most complete and also get them all in the right order. Hopefully this adds to everyones soap knowledge. I can get columns from JMR's first in June 1976 (Lynda started Oct 76) but I might make a 70's themed soap blog for that. As I still have all those 70's soap mags to get scanned too. Just remember you can click on the year hash tags and put them in chrono order too if you want Anyway enjoy. I will be uploading a bunch over the next few hours until I get to May 83. Then from Mondayish I will probably just do one month per day or something. https://thesoapsofyesterday-blog-blog.tumblr.com ETA: LOL, Just as I get to March 21, 1983 synopsis Tumblr tells me I have reached my post limit for the day. Sorry everyone. Hopefully there is other stuff you can enjoy or just wait 24 hrs.

I found this and was wondering if Doug was talking about Brenda Dickson? Steven would have believed it since Jill and Andy were together when Deb Adair was in the role But Davidson pulled his all-time favorite gag on Steven Ford when he played Andy Richards (1981-87) on the show. "We had a cast member on the show, who will remain nameless, that nobody liked to work with," explains Davidson. "I typed up four scenes between Steve and this actress and inserted them into his script. When Steve got it, he saw all these mad passionate scenes with someone he didn't want to work with at all. It was very funny."

It is interesting to see where this story was going before Bell decided to extend it another six months or so. In the summer, Paul seemed to be pretty sure George killed himself to frame him and you can see it was going to wrap up soon. Then we get another six months with Cassie and Adrian. btw I looked at the icon/avatar and was like did Lauralee Bell start a Y&R youtube channel? lol

Realism on Soap Operas
In the early days stories were realistic. That is, the stuff that happened in soaps could and did happen in real life, just not to the same group of people with all the twists and turns. Though I have heard real life stories that rival any soap. GH was the first turning point with the whole Ice Princess stuff in the early 80's (Was there a story before that that was a bit whacky?) but most of the soaps managed to adapt and still keep a somewhat realistic tone, or at least balance things out. In 1995 JER's DOOL/MP and even the OJ Simpson trial took soaps to a place that they have neve recovered from. The wacky, campy and down right insulting stories caused soaps to lose whatever small amount of respect they had gained and many of them became a circus and soon it was clones, possessions, unabortions, evil twins and a myriad of so many other things I can't keep track. Demo chasing became more of a thing than it had ever been and execs were bending over backward to capture that audience. Problem is young audiences can be fickle and when the fun stops, they head for the hills. Soaps should have continued chasing a similar audience it had always gone after. Stats show more women between 2000 - 2005 were choosing not to enter the work force than previously (in effect the start of millennial gen coming of age) had been. Recording options were in abundance and the ability to build and maintain an audience was there. There is a reason ratings were tanking and it wasn't just a sign of the times. TPTB had no idea what they were doing and the old guard was being tossed aside for creatives that in many cases had never worked in daytime before. Your fave show may have still had its good moments, but for me, the more I look back, the more I realise soaps were done in 1995. I held on another 10 years and haven't watched since. 2001/02 may have been the absolute death knell as I can't watch anything from any soap past that point.

It's so frustrating to see Amy go. I love Olivia, but having Dru be a long lost sister to Amy that the family never talked about and utilizing the already long history of Amy and Nathan, not to mention Frank Lewis, would have been so awesome. We saw Loretta so little that the same tension between Dru and Loretta could have been used. I guess that would have left Mamie out in the cold though, although the show retconned relationships all the time. So I guess Bell could have still had Mamie be Amy and Dru's aunt and the show could have gotten away with it. Then again having Dru and Olivia and keeping Amy as well was still a great option too.

So I have decided to start a tumblr. I am going to upload all of Jon-Michael Reed's columns and recaps, as well as Lynda Hirsch and anything else soap related I come across. Also any scans I eventually get done of the 70's soap magazines will go there too as well as (I hope, lol) the remaining SOD 90's mags that I have. I figured it is easier than opening several threads here. I put together a very basic one that I might redesign as I go along. Here is the link https://thesoapsofyesterday-blog-blog.tumblr.com Give me a few days to start uploading stuff, I will probably just send a message once I have started putting things up, but it will be slow. Very slow, haha So happy to get more 1988. So awesome, thankyou

No worries. I just tried to upload a few to a new thread and it wouldn't let me. They are jpg files. Does anyone know how to contact admin and ask if there is some way to fix this. I don't want to put them in the vault as they are all soaps and not just Y&R, but if there is no fix I might just have to do that.

I have uploaded all the 1986 cast charts to the vault. I did some reformatting and fixed some errors. I also decided that subs would be moved and combined with the contract player. So for example Brenda D and Deb Adair will be together and listed based on their combined appearances as Jill. JUst gives a better idea of how much the character was on for the month and I did the same with Gisele and Jeanne and Terry and Brett. On to finishing 1987. I also have the Jon-Michael Reed / Nancy Reichardt (she took over May 86 when JMR passed) newspaper recaps from post Mar 1983. So I will begin to upload those soon as well. I also have Lynda Hirsch as well, but hers are more confusing. While both published recaps on a Friday. JMR must have gotten synopsis from the networks or production companies as his are Mon-Fri. Lynda most likely watched and recapped, so hers seem to be Thu - Wed. If you want me to post them I will, but it often makes things confusing.
