So we actually get to hear Neil Fenmore on the phone before he dies. I wonder who played him. Did it sound like Jim Storm to anyone? I almost thought it was John McCook, but I am bad at tracking voices. Love Paul in his Miami Vice outfit, haha While I think Faren was a bit cutesy Andrews Sisters sometimes. I liked Coleen. I think she did a good job once Faren had to get into the drama and darker moments of the story more. Always interesting to see Brad and Lauren and then Brad and Traci. Don plays Brad as being better matched to Lauren and I still can't figure out if Brad was supposed to truly be in love with Traci, or if he was just using her as Jack believed. Maybe he loved her as a good friend and pushed that more due to what the relationship would bring him? I actually like that Bell did this with his characters, often made their motivations unclear. Thanks for the leading us to that classic ep @BoldRestless. Yes hopefully we get more this year.

Oh yeah, now that you mention it 😄

It would be interesting to know which actor was playing Derek when he contacts Kay. Caleb Stoddard apparently lasted three weeks and Jeff Cooper about the same. Maybe one of them called Kay and the other one went to her house, haha

As a side note and somewhat related. I read through available synopsis and looked at the cast charts for the 69-70 "season" of DOOL. The entire period from Sep 69 - May 70 was focused almost entirely on Kitty and Bill. Kitty blackmailing Bill, her death, his trial and conviction and his jail time. With brief interludes of Julie/Scott/Susan, and I do mean brief, like once or twice a month initially until the Spring when that story got a bit more airtime. Every character seemed focused on and involved in the one story. The ratings on Wiki for that period (actually Sep 69 - Apr 70) show a 0.5 drop from the previous year and I wonder if the audience was too overwhelmed with seeing one story every day. Of course it could have been other factors too. I guess Bell may have decided to never to do that again. As you say it may have been clunky, avoiding having all characters drawn into the one story, but neccessary to keep the show from being weighed down too much by the one story.

It does sound like very little crossover to be honest. It probably did occur much as you state with Stuart telling them Peg would find it too humiliating to go through it all with everyone there. Maybe they were all there once. I'm also wondering if a lot of Lorie and Leslie's interaction with Peg was off screen and simply mentioned as "Yes Lorie came by after she returned from San Francisco" or Lorie telling Lance "I've just been to see Peg" and so on. Leslie seems on the verge of another nervous breakdown through much of this time and Bell is almost hinting at the story going that way (though it doesn't), she also seems to be out of town a lot doing conerts as well. So she seems rather incapable of being there for anyone.

That's what I imagined to be honest. The more vast sets seemed to have come through in the 80's.

Thanks so much for putting up more synopsis, such a treat. Y&R is so dark and gloomy for the most part. No real fun or romance happening. Even the couples moving toward each other are tentative and have some sort of conflict. I wonder what it was like watching day to day. Derek would go through a recast during this time and it seems little story occurred. Jill is very quiet this month as a result. I find Brad's motivations odd. He is a doctor and a psychiatrist as well. He knows he could be self sufficient if he tried and would not be a burden to Leslie. I mean he has fooled everyone so far, no one questions his sight being an issue, so I am not sure why he thinks he can't get by without being a burden to Leslie. Though I guess Bill Bell might have delved deeper into his foolish ideas through Lorie. He is being stubborn and silly, which is realistic. No teen stories for the summer yet. When did that become a thing? Seems more so in the 80's I still can't get over how Ron would eventually ride off into the sunset with Nancy and Karen. He is so evil, especially considering what is to come. Would love to see Jeanne in Kay's daring swimsuit trying to seduce Ralph. I am also curious at to what that set would have looked like. The bigger more expansive sets seemed to be more common through the 80's, but maybe the show was already expanding its set design and had a bigger budget to work with. The rape trial would have needed quite a few extras I suppose.

It was interesting seeing Jack at the beginning of that story. Still clean cut and determined to get to the bottom of things. Then a complete mess, given up hope and a drunk. I guess Bell was trying to maybe, somewhat redeem him for his past crimes against, well, so many people. Ellen and the homeless shelter and saving Jill certainly made him a sort of hero. Or at least not as much of a scoundrel

That's the big question, some remember Halsey in the role when Jill got hired, others remember Sean. Halsey wasn't mentioned in the press until Aug, the same time Deb Adair was announced as the new Jill. There is no mention of Sean Garrison at all that I could find, but Halsey is not mentioned at all in May/Jun either.

Yeah he was the character with the least development. Greg also never drove much story until Hauser was in the role. Jim Houghton had the Gwen Sherman story which I don't think was a major one at the time, or if it was, it was the only one he had and when Houghton left after three years, I don't know that Greg was that important for the show, I mean there was a six month gap before Brian Kerwin came on, so was Greg really all that missed? Brian, who was barely there and played out only the Euthenasia story which he was supporting in probably didn't make much impact. Then the character was off screen for another six months. I am guessing by 1977 the idea of changing Greg may not have seemed like such a big deal. Viewers probably weren't that attached to him.

I always thought the same of David as Snapper and if anything David should have been Greg. I think Wings had more the attitude of Snapper. Just watching that clip you see it, Hauser looks like the older brother, is dark and gloomy more like Espy's Snapper and David is just a relaxed happy go lucky guy. And maybe that influenced things. They lost the darker moodier Foster boy when Espy left. Maybe Bell and Conboy just decided to try to switch them. That seems to be what viewers essentially got during Hauser's time on the show. In terms of his looks, it is interesting, as Conboy was pretty serious about his cast being young and beautiful. In general that is what Conboy hired, so I can't really understand it either. Interesting point about the anti-hero stuff in the 70's. I would be willing to buy that being part of his casting for sure.
