I have never felt Deborah got Jill. Jill's father walked out on her giving her abandonment issues. Her first love was killed by a woman she had looked up to and almost worshiped, her second love was also taken away by the same woman and she was left to raise her son alone. Jill had sociopathic tendencies because each time she got hurt she closed her heart off more and more. By the time she went after Stuart, it was almost understandable that she would be so desperate for security that she would betray her own mother. Brenda and Jess got this and played it and Deborah, at least from what I have seen, never did. She played a sweet girl who was a little bitchy and manipulative and somewhat spoiled and entitled. I don't think she truly ever understood Jill's deeper motivations and scars. DA's Jill seemed like she would have married Andy, had more kids and lived in the Foster home happily ever after. I do believe Brenda could have played the romance with John, she did so with Phillip and Derek.

Yes Liz said she signed a multi year contract and was shocked when they dumped the Laurence Family. Meaning Victoria Mallory was also expecting to stay too

Bell & Kay Alden TAPE DATE - Thursday January 06, 1977 AIR DATE - Thursday January 13, 1977 CAST - Lorie, Lance, Brad, Leslie, Brock, Kay, Stuart, Jen & Peg SETS - Tahiti Set, Brad and Leslie's Apartment, Chancellor Living Room, Brooks Living Room SYNOPSIS Lance & Lorie - The newlyweds are honeymooning in Tahiti. Lance is talking business on the phone. They then talk about their marriage, what it will be like being married to each other, the future and so on. Lorie admits she loves everything about Lance and confesses she can't separate him from his wealth. She also admits she is horrible with money and he tells her that she will have an allowance, and that the jet isn't a play thing. Lorie tells him she would love to be part of every facet of his life and Lance tells her that he would love for her to get involved in the business. She asks about his business call, but he would prefer not to discuss that right now. Lorie wants to know where they are going next, but Lance wants to keep that as a surprise. She does tell Brad that he has been doing so much better since they reconciled and that she has something to tell him. Peg, Stuart & Jen - Peg returns home and almost forgets to take off her wedding ring. Stuart and Jen press her about her future life plans, but Peggy is vague. Stu notices Peggy isn't wearing her engagement ring. Peg finds it in her pocket and puts it on, then quickly says goodnight to her parents and goes upstairs. Stu and Jen argue about his dislike of Jack. He blames Jack for Peggy's problems, then bluntly states that Peggy's real problems started with Jen's affair. Brock & Kay - Kay is lonely and is feeling sorry for herself. Brock tells her to reach out to others for help. She doesn't want to hear it, especially if he is going to tell her to help others and toss her money to the wind. Kay then turns the tables and asks what Brock plans to do with his life. Peg is reluctant, he tells her they can just lie in bed together. He wants to be with her as she falls asleep and there when she wakes in the morning. He asks her to trust him and she gives in and agrees to spend the night. Liz & Joann - Liz tells Joann how possessive Kay can be. How she gives with one hand and takes with the other. She also tells her about Jill working for Mrs. Chancellor. Joann & Kay - Joann tells Kay she is going to enrol in University, it is something she promised herself she would do. Kay mentions there is another reason to enrol.......her ex-husband works there, Jo tells her she is turned off all men right now (would love to see Kay's expression here). Mrs. Chancellor pretends she is worried that Joann will have no spare time for herself with working at The Allegro and studying (but is really more worried Jo won't have time for her) Kay suggests that Jo attend school and make money by becoming her paid companion. EPISODE - #971 WRITTEN BY - William J. Bell TAPE DATE - Tuesday January 18, 1977 AIR DATE - Wednesday January 26, 1977 CAST - Lance, Lorie, Greg, Snapper, Kay, Joann, Japanese Man (Middle Aged), 2 Younger Japanese Men, Nurse SETS - Allegro (Portion - Booth), Brooks Living Room, Jack's Apartment, Chancellor Living Room SYNOPSIS Lance & Lorie - We see Lance and Lorie sightseeing in Tokyo that evening (This isn't on location but a mix of the actors and film clips - I get the feeling this is similar to Lauren's San Fran car tour with Lance pointing things out and Lorie being excited) We next see them as they return from dinner. Lorie has the hiccups but wants more sake. Lance remembers her being drunk in Mexico City and tossing her clothes off the balcony. Lorie loves Tokyo but Lance tells her they are leaving in the morning. Then three Japanese men burst through the door and hold them captive, until they realise they have the wrong Prentiss and they apologise and leave. Lance wonders if they are looking for Lucas. Joann & Kay - Kay is miserable waiting for Jo to return home (it is 1am apparently) They talk about Jo's day, Kay's drinking (she hasn't cut back but hasn't been drinking more) Jo still losing weight and the insecurities that come with being a woman. Kay asks again if Jo will be her paid companion. Jo finally agrees to the job. Greg & Snapper - Greg confronts his brother at the hospital about the respirator plug being pulled. He is furious and plans to get to the bottom of it. Snapper tells him pretty much to bugger off until Greg mentions that Lt. Dillon told him about the plug and is planning to go to Liz as well.

Roberta did choose to leave the show. The story started in April 1981. It was focused on Casey but Nikki was somewhat involved. Casey left town in early June 81 and immediately the stalker began harrassing Nikki (who moved into Casey's place just as she left town) So my guess would be the story was transferred.

Could Aaron be connected to Prentiss? This was around the time Victor took control and Lucas and Lorie were trying to figure out how he did it. Aaron may be a stockholder or someone else at the company that they talk to? Not sure he would have been more than a day player.

I seriously had no idea there was an American version, the Australian one was ahead of its time. An openly gay character, a Trans character, interracial romances, nudity and some pretty raunchy stuff played out on that show between 72 - 77. I am not surprised these elements never made it to the US version, but would be interested in how this show played out in the US. Apparently the show was often censored here too, but after the shows popularity grew, the censors apparently gave up

Haha, I can give you that secret right now, I am a bit sorry it isn't as exciting as time travel and evil twins. Newspapers.com. Best resource ever. I recommend it, but it costs obviously. Also because JMR and Lynda Hirsch were syndicated, everything is all over the place, getting everything in the right order and making sure you have the correct columns and synopsis for a particular week isn't easy, Takes a lot of time and effort, but so worth it.

I am finishing my last week of University after four years and it has been hectic and insane (along with yet another lockdown here in Melbourne) I will done for good this Friday and will be updating the blog again from Fri. Oh yeah I get you were talking generally, I just thought maybe it had become more a thing on Y&R as well in the last 15 years. Not sure about Adam as I only remember him as a baby. Yeah it was definitely around from the beginning. I was also shocked that evil twin stories were thought to be a tired trope as early as the late 60's. So I guess that one was around pretty early on too. DOOL is definitely the biggest culprit, haha. I wonder if Bobby Ewing's return on Dallas in 86 gave them more confidence to start doing it regularly on daytime soaps, or do you think it was before this that it became more popular. Though I think Stefano had already died and come back by this point hadn't he?

I get this was a general soap trope, but when did it become a Y&R thing? I was dipping in and out during the early 2000's and stopped watching completely in 2006, and I don't remember a character that was legitimately thought dead by the audience who came back during that period.

I feel like the first insulting story was having her make a move on Victor in 2003. I don't know why, but it was gross. 02/03 was the worst so many horrible things happened during that period.

Unfortunately most of the singles off The Velvet Rope album were never released commercially in the US, which basically meant they were not eligible to chart back then, because I would put her creative peak from 1989 - 1998. I love Control, but RN is on another level, as too is Velvet Rope. Janet. was also solid and I still love it. I think after Velvet, her work felt more derivitive of her past work and I didn't feel the growth from her as much. I do think she could have scored more hits post Superbowl if that incident hadn't happened, but I do think her output was not as strong post 1998.

@FrenchFan All these synopsis are so great, I would love it if you could go on to 1977. I would post more, but so busy with only a few more weeks of school left. The effort is appreciated though.

It's hard to know. Bell must have had some agency here, but maybe he stayed out of hiring and firing. I honestly feel like Lynde would have left anyway. She did not seem happy and was even less happy that her schedule was so full that she could no longer be let out to do other things as often as she used to. Possibly Conboy talked it over with Bell, but made it seem more Janice's idea than his? I agree he had a lot less interest in Leslie when Janice left and she became almost a plot device to keep Lorie in the throws of drama.

I had heard Conboy was convinced Lynde was grand standing during contract negotiation time by faking a back problem. Then because she had publicly talked about being unhappy with the show, Conboy was like if you don't want to be here go and she did. So I guess maybe it was more mutual but Conboy was ready to give her the pink slip anyway.

Hey everyone, sorry for the long absence. Easter break vacation and assignments got me busy. I will be updating the blog from tomorrow.

I've said before I thought Brad's blindness was a weak motivation for the character to leave Leslie, making it all too contrived. I don't believe after everything Brad went through with Barbara and releasing all that and working through it, he would repeat the same cycle by throwing everything away. Especially since he seems to be doing mostly fine handling his blindness. Brad knew better than to assume he would be nothing but a burden if he were permanently vision impaired and the show could have used this opportunity to show how people deal with and maintain independance when losing sight. I assume the tension would be around the fact that audiences invested in Brad and Leslie and the whole thing could have been ripped apart at any moment and Leslie and Lance were inching closer together. Plus the frustration of having Leslie and Brad keeping secrets. Though it seems like a lot of sturm and drang. I can't imagine I would have enjoyed seeing Leslie depressed every day and stoic Brad going on about saving poor Leslie from a lifetime of caring for him. For me the more exciting aspect is Lorie's paranoia about losing Lance and her growing adversarial relationship with Vanessa.

Ashley wanted the baby but found out Nikki was dying and decided to have an abortion as she also didn't want to raise the baby alone or marry Matt (he offered) just for the sake of raising the baby with a father (she also didn't want a repeat of her child finding out their father was someone else like she did with Brent) Matt eventually told Victor and he tried to stop her but she ended up getting an earlier appointment and it was done. Victor raged at her for not telling him and never wanted to see her again. After that Ashley seemed mostly okay but slowly fell into a depression and began hearing a baby crying here and there. Julia came to town to try to help her but Ashley backed away from everyone, including Matt. At Christmas, John gave her an open ended ticket to have a vacation and she left around New Years, at the same time she ran into Nikki (who didn't know about the pregnancy or abortion) who rubbed it in that she and Victor were reconciled and Ashley was alone. As she flew into New York (I think on her way to Barbados?) she began losing it and went into a semi catatonic state. She walked the streets of NYC until she was found by a police officer sitting in a park in the rain. He tried to help her but she couldn't speak, so he took her to the sanatorium where she was admitted.

Yes the Chris/Snapper/Greg triangle and their story was mostly re-done for the first year of B&B. Except Bell didn't marry Ridge and Caroline. Ridge always seemed a little like a combo of Jack Abbott and Snapper. Thorne, before Jeff Trachta, did seem like Greg. I always saw Brooke more like Jill 2.0 with a bit of Sally Maguire thrown in. All three had the same names. Ruth, Wanda and Julie. Leslie mistaking the orderly for Brad same as Ashley mistaking the orderly for Victor and both being attacked. Pretty much the whole story was repeated. I knew Bell used similar elements in other stories, but this was by far the most blatant. Also who else thinks the nurse looks similar to K.T Stevens? The woman could have played Vanessa's younger sister for sure

Yeah true, I think if this show had been more diverse back then, such as characters that came later like Amy, Dru, Olivia, Neil etc.... this would not have seemed so bad, but when your only Black/POC character is a scary mental patient it is disappointing. Even in the 70's Bell and co could have been doing better.

Yes I always thought Ashley was a Lorie/Leslie hybrid. He seemed to love her (character) in the same way he did Lorie and Leslie too.
