I'm trying to remember if any characters brought in for 90 minutes had a long term impact on story. Was Cecile brought in during the 90 minute era?

That's true. It could have been an NBC daytime panel show. What What Happens? Look for the latest rumors on that brawl between Kaye Stevens and Susan Seaforth Hayes. Or they'd have a strained reunion between Beverlee McKinsey and Nic Coster.

They could have just made Doctors 45 minutes and then had a quick news show.

Yeah...it's so tough for me to know what did or didn't click because I was not watching that day to day. I can see where the Cassandra story, which went on for what, a year, two years? must have exhausted viewers. What did you think of Jazz? Was he the first black character on the show (or the first to become popular)? I wonder why the show has never considered bringing him back. Was Suzanne a part of Derek's story (offcamera) from the time he first came on the show or was she made up a few years later? I wonder if they just ran out of ideas with Derek. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did.

Going by the recaps, mid-October. One of the other reasons given for the 1987 date was that this was supposed to be an easy starting point for viewers. Nothing says easy starting point like two weeks of MJ crying, "I WAS A WHORE!!!" They may not have all of them but I think they must have a fair amount from that period. They pulled out that random 1979 ATWT episode which had never made the rounds before, as far as I know.

I've only seen one other 90 minute episode (I guess more must be available if P&G ever releases them - don't they have everything for their soaps going back to 1979?) and the padding was a little better but not much. I think that was the episode where Joey was in court or something.

I'd forgotten Cal was in this episode. Was this his last appearance?

Eww Katie! At least there's Andy. If you watch an episode from 1988-2008 there really isn't a huge difference in how Helen Wagner comes across. I'd forgotten that Will had such red hair. I really liked Craig as Adam. I also didn't mind this Jennifer, at first. Later on she became awful. Hal/Barbara <3

That makes sense. Are there any stories from the 70's or 80's that were badly received (I know the Katherine/JoAnn story was, but beyond that)?

Since it has Jake/Julia (the only time I liked Julia) it is 1999.

Some of the Matt/Ellen clips available are from the Culliton material - up to the the time of Matt fighting to be able to help in surgery. There are a fair amount of Eve clips starting from the very first episode. Lucy's miscarriage is also up.

In the past some former posters here mentioned stories like Chris and Snapper arguing over furniture, or the cult story Nikki and Peggy were involved in. The late 70's to early 80's seemed to be seen as a weak period for the show, with declining ratings and aging characters. I don't know about fan response, but a book on soap lists asked a sociologist type of person to name their ten most offensive soap stories, and they were disgusted by Ashley's abortion storyline, both that she did this for Victor and that she had a complete mental breakdown afterward. There was also some controversy over the whiteface story.
