Dallas Discussion Thread
I never really bought this as anything more than just a caption for the picture. In the context of the photograph and the scene from the 2012-2014 series, the Ewings were "fighting back." Dallas without JR could work, IMO. In real life, JR Ewing would die, and the family would continue to succeed or fail.

I think this is the second time CZ has gone on record to criticize the Barbara/Gunnar pairing, and it's funny, because I remember clear as day when they made a ton of videos for the show's 50th anniversary, she specifically said that her favorite storyline was "early Barbara, James, and Gunnar." This thread is the first I heard a lot about CZ not being the most pleasant person behind the scenes.

Y&R to air classic episodes
And so when they actually DID get back together, no one was annoyed or bored or blah about it. They’d been waiting to scratch that itch for a decade, so the audience was ready to see this develop. That is literally what soap opera can do that no other form of entertainment can do. Why do these people running these shows not see this and capitalize on it?

I thought it was terrible. I was no Vienna fan in any way (she did grow on me with time), but I hated how they turned her into a villain to support Henry getting with Barbara just so that they could do Ellen DeGeneres-style dance numbers each week. It was terrible. I get why CZ loved it on a personal level considering what she'd been going through at the time, but I wish they'd given her something else.

Y&R to air classic episodes
It is truly a testament of how good this show once was that they can choose two episodes that originally aired nearly a decade apart, and there is still continuity in the form of the Eve storyline. Yes! So very sexy (I see that booty, KSJ).

Y&R to air classic episodes
I'm mad because there was no iconic Rex/Katherine shot in the opening, but I'll live. THIS is the Y&R everyone in my family was obsessed with and us kids grew up with. It just looks and sounds so perfect, and every character shown so far is important to the very fiber of the show's being. After only ten minutes, it's heartbreaking to think of how far this show has fallen. Look at how beautiful and rich these location scenes with Dru and Neil are. No attempt to get fancy with film. Just straight videotape, and it's gorgeous. They knew it was a soap, and they were proud of it. Dru and Neil - pure romance that isn't overblown and contrived. A laid-back couple basking in the glow of new wedded bliss. And the perfectly understated Y&R music. Did I hear the old "Genoa City Theme" in that Brad/Ashley scene? Classic Victor and Nicki angst. This episode has it all even with just a handful-and-a-half of characters. That LUSH music coming to crescendo and then fading out as we hold on Nicki's tear-stained face for a silent beat - then fade to black. It's art, damn it.

I'm with you on this 100%. I recall at the time there were people ready to not only condemn KZ but also Jake as homophobes because he vacated the role. The reason they gave was extremely legitimate - he was 15 and wanted to focus on finishing school and doing music, and, surprise, that's exactly what he did. Kim's a very smart woman. I would imagine she encouraged him to do ATWT as a summer job that would be a crash course into acting so that when he was ready to do it full-time, he wasn't entirely green.

Y&R to air classic episodes
The funny thing is, when they aired the Victor/Nicki wedding for NYE, I remember coming home from a vacation and they still had it available "on demand," but this time, it's not (or maybe it was - for whatever reason, only the two most recent episodes are available, usually it's the last five airings). They don't even have tomorrow's airing listed.

This will be another good one! I might fall out when Rex puts the necklace on Katherine in the opening.

Unsung
Wait - they FINALLY did a Betty Wright episode? That's the one I've always wanted, but I remember reading a few years back that Betty wasn't interested because she didn't want to be seen as a "has-been" Oh, okay, I see it premiered last night. I'm about to boot that sht up and watch it right NOW. Lord, I'm in my feelings off the strength of the teaser alone. Damn. I love this woman so much. Why is Trick Daddy slurring his ass through this? Okay, let me stop live posting this lol --- I finished, and what a wonderful episode. Not a lot of drama because Betty managed to avoid drug/alcohol abuse and also had/has a great team of people around her, mostly family. Her main problem seemed to be running to the altar with guys who looked and seemed good on the outside but were really not for her in the end. I teared up at the end with her daughters singing back-up and her just sitting in the backyard and enjoying her life. She's always been one of the most down-to-earth and realest singing stars, and one of the things mentioned (but I don't think they really explored it) was that she made a ton of choices to stay true to herself, maybe those choices kept her from blowing up in a bigger way, but she has definitely gotten her flowers while living, and she's still young - only 66. She still has a youthful mindset, and that's helped her continue to find success decade after decade. Great episode and story.

Back then, they relied more on second-hand programming. Little House on the Prairie was a staple there for years - I remember every time they debuted a new schedule without it, they'd end up bringing it back a week or two later because it was a hit (and still is, it's never been off the air since it premiered in 1974), which connects to the topic since Maura brought it up as an example of the type of show that really doesn't exist anymore. I'm not sure I'd put ATWT in the same "family-friendly" category as LHOTP, but a network that was successful with Golden Girls before it became trendy to like Golden Girls could have had success with quarterly GL/ATWT movies. They still could, though maybe the ship has sailed. They'd have to find a way to sell it to the built-in audience while also making is accessible to people who never watched the original series. It could totally work. You woudn't have an entire soap-sized cast involved in each movie. With ATWT, you could focus half of your movies on the Snyders and half on the Hughes/Stewart group and alternate between the two, maybe present smaller stories so that you could have them all included in a Christmas special, etc. In 2017, Hallmark made 33 original movies just at Christmastime. They absolutely 100% have the resources to make this happen. It just takes interest on their part and willingness on P&G's part.

Yes! I forgot all about that. It was like 2003 or 2004 when that first came out, and no one believed it for yeeeeeeeeeeears, and then here comes Retro. In a way, I'm glad because Hallmark would've never given the show the treatment it's gotten from Retro. It might've been different with GL and ATWT, but The Doctors would've last maybe two months before getting pulled.

I just want to repeat what everyone else has said - Don Hastings has found the fountain of youth. Flashier characters get more attention, but Don Hastings is one of the true faces of CBS Daytime. I love that he is living his best life. They mention Hallmark Channel. When the shows were cancelled, I totally dreamed that Hallmark would pick up reruns and then do seasonal reunion movies.

Another reason they might be repeating a previous rerun is...who's actually going in to work on prepping things for air? They might be trying to require as few people as possible working for as little time as possible to make this happen.

Y&R to air classic episodes
It's a good episode. I forced my non-soap fan friends to watch with me on NYE a few years ago, and they enjoyed it (for real - not to just talk sht about it). Maybe they pulled that one because they knew it was already "prepared" for airing? It's not a surprising pick. For many, many viewers, Victor and Nicki are Y&R. Re: 70s episodes. I think if they go there, we'd definitely get the first episode just for the sake of it being the first episode. I would imagine they could find some good Katherine/Phillip/Jill stuff, too.

Law & Order: SVU - Discussion Thread
Stabler as a private investigator would be so different and old school, and I would probably even make an effort to regularly watch it. As far as this is actually concerned, I'm getting "Untouchables but with season-long arcs" vibes. I'll probably never watch this, but I love Christopher Meloni and hope it's a success, which it most likely will be.

I'd be upset if they purposely edited out the B and C stories. I think ABC only did that for A Daytime to Remember because they only had a 30-minute timeslot - they had no choice but to edit the hour-long (and 45-minute) episodes. With this, I would hope CBS keeps as much in tact as possible and only edits for commercials and for the hopefully quick interstitials. You can find A Daytime to Remember-broadcast classic eps on YouTube complete with Reba's intros. To me, the highlight of the whole run had to be Kevin's 1976 birth on OLTL. I believe it's only the second-oldest episode of the show that anyone these days has access to.

Y&R to air classic episodes
Ah, okay, that does all sound very familiar. Being that this was around the time more and more stuff started popping up on YT, I don't think anyone really cared that this "experiment" didn't work out. I do recall a relatively older episode of OLTL from the mid-90s being aired, featuring Thorsten Kaye's head of hideous hair. Clearly, you're ready to roll out the list of Y&R episodes to expect. I'll be here waiting - not like I have anything else to do these days.
